Minecraft Xbox 360 gets 55 Halloween skins, proceeds go to charity

Tis the seasons for ghouls, ghasts, and perhaps most importantly, candy. Halloween is right around the corner, and to celebrate, Mojang and 4J studios have released a pack of 55 Halloween-themed skins for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition. The skins were put together by a number of different studios, including Mojang, 343 Industries, and Rare.

Even better is that this skins pack is cheap – we’re talking just 160 MSP, of $2 for those of you who prefer real-world terms. All of the money made from this DLC will be going to charity, so not only can you get 55 Minecraft skins on the cheap, but you can feel good about the fact that the money you paid will be going to a good cause. PlayXBLA says that the profits will be split up four ways, going to Block by Block, SANDS Lothians, Child’s Play, and Macmillan Cancer Support, and you find out more about each by clicking here.

The list of skins is long and varied, with a number of different developers (both indie and big-time) contributing to this pack. Have a look at the full list below, which includes the developers and each of the skins they’re responsible for:

• 343 Industries: Vampire
• 4J Studios: The Grim Reaper, Devil, Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy, Werewolf, Ghost, Evil Wizard, Bride of Dracula, Bride of Frakenstein, Ghoul, Scary Clown
• Army of Trolls: Dracula, Frakenstien, Pumpkin, Skeleton, Mummy, Wolfman
• Climax Studios: Zombie Businessman, Cyclops, Evil Clown, Evil Robot, Vampire Girl, Grey, Headless Horseman, Lizard Man, Scarecrow, Scary Nom, Mad Scientist, Skeleton, Witch Doctor, Zombie
• Mojang: Evil Robot
• Owlchemy Labs: Zombie Jack Lumber
• Press Play: Evil Lemmy, Evil Max
• Rare: Gregg the Grim Reaper, Ancient Mummy, Zippy Zombie
• Ronimo Games: Zombie Lonestar
• Ska Studios: Cyborg Pumpkinhead, Mara
• Tequila Works: Mining Unit 010, Jacko, Bonny
• The Behemoth: Hatty
• Toylogic: Happy Zombie Cleric, Happy Zombie Mage, Happy Zombie Warrior
• Twisted Pixel Games: Captain Zombie, The Gunstringer, Ms. Splosion Man Mask, Skelly, Splodeton

That certainly isn’t bad for just $2, but to be honest, we think 4J could have charged more, considering the fact that 55 skins are included in this pack and the profits are all going to charity. The pack goes on sale today, but if you want it, you’ll have to act quick – it’ll only be available until November 26. Are you picking up the Halloween Skin Pack for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition?

Apple says PC makers “afraid” to drop old technology

Apple has always been about streamlining their product lineups, and they recently did that by switching to solid state storage and slowly getting rid of optical drives in their computers. In an interview with Time, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller said that PC manufacturers “are afraid” to do the same.

Schiller says that “these old technologies” are holding the company back and are simply just “anchors” that are weighing down Apple and preventing them from going where they want to go. He continues by saying that technologies and hardware like optical drives are no longer useful and have completes their purpose, but Windows PC manufacturers are “afraid to remove them.”

A lot of users thought Apple would eventually upgrade the optical drives in Macs to Blu-ray drives, but the company has done exactly the opposite by removing optical drives completely. Even some people thought that Apple might introduce cheaper Macs, but the company released the iPad instead, which has been chipping away at PC sales since its release.

Speaking of cheaper computers, Schiller referenced the once popular trend of netbooks, and noted that Apple didn’t want to build a netbook of their own because they were simply substandard products to begin with and weren’t the future of computing. Although, some say that the MacBook Air line is the company’s response to netbooks, especially the 11-inch model, but Apple claims it as simply a thinner and lighter laptop.

This Is The Nexus 10

nexus10-3

As you’ve no doubt already heard, Google is planning to unveil some new Nexus-branded goodies on Monday. LG’s Nexus 4 smartphone has been examined in what seems like excruciating detail already, but now leaked images of Samsung’s Nexus 10 tablet (obtained by BriefMobile) have begun to make their way ‘round the web.

An earlier leak of the Nexus 10’s instructional manual gave us a rough sense of its size and dimensions, but these new images add some much-needed context. First impressions: it’s actually pretty ho-hum in terms of industrial design. There aren’t enough photos floating around to form a really clear impression of the hardware, but (in usual Samsung fashion) it looks awfully slim and more than a little plasticky. The front-facing speaker placement is one of Samsung’s preferred (and rightly so) design choices. Most concerning is the patch of textured material running horizontally across the tablet’s back. Samsung seems to have gone for the same aesthetic as the mottled, leather-esque finish on the Nexus 7, but didn’t quite feel like swathing the entire back plate with the material.

The tablet’s looks may not be the most provocative, but the display should cause some ears to perk up. According to BriefMobile, the 10.1-inch Super AMOLED panel runs at a whopping 2560×1600, which works out to a pixel density of 298.9ppi — Apple’s Retina iPad tops out at 263.92, in case you were wondering. The internals are no slouch either — it’s being said that a 1.7GHz dual-core Exynos processor is running the show, with 2GB of RAM and a Mali-T604 GPU to help keep things chugging along nicely. There’s apparently no microSD card slot on-board (which is total BS, though not a huge surprise), and the device is expected to ship in multiple memory configurations starting at 16GB.

Also on deck is Android 4.2, which as it turns out won’t sport the “Key Lime Pie” moniker. It’s still Jelly Bean for all intents and purposes, though there are quite a few nifty additions to flesh out the stock Android experience. The Gallery app has been updated with some minor graphical enhancements, and the camera interface seems to have been improved substantially. Perhaps the most notable change we’ve seen so far though is the ability to create and switch between multiple user accounts on the device itself — some of us have been waiting years for this to become a reality.

There’s still no firm word on pricing or availability. But considering the leaks we’ve seen lately, it may not long before that info starts spreading too. That said, it seems like the Nexus 10 is going to be the Android tablet to covet — if Google manages to slap a reasonable price tag on this thing, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft could have some tremendous competition to contend with as we head into the holidays.

Let the Music Keep You Running

If you are a gym go-er like me then you will easily relate to what I am about to say: some days are tougher than others to motivate. Other days you feel like you could keep going for hours on the elliptical or treadmill or what not. So many variables enter into our workout motivation. We have definitely become a society of earbuds while exercising. Face the facts, the right music at the right time helps. There’s nothing like reaching the end of your run, digging deep for your kick when that upbeat, motivational song comes on. Tunes truly carry us through some workouts.

Researchers at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville are about to present a new technology that could make music selection during workout obsolete. Shahriar Nirjon heads the team which created MusicalHeart, bio-feedback system made for smartphones. A special set of earbuds with a microphone imbedded in the earpieces pics up the throb of the arteries in your ear. The data is then paired with information from the accelerometer, built into an app, to determine your next song. This means when your heart rate is too low for your preset workout goals a more ‘heart pumping’ song will queue up. Or perhaps you have overdone it. Then you can look forward to a more mellow tune. The objective is to keep you within your desired BPM. Medical uses may possibly exist for anxiety disorders too. Read the full paper on MusicalHeart here. Though still just a concept it seems logical. Who knows, maybe someday soon our tunes will help us reach the exercise finish line.

Sarlacc Pit Bundt Cake Devours Everything in Sight

Poor Boba Fett. He came to a pretty lame end by falling into the Sarlacc pit. His jetpack didn’t even help him. Well, if you love that classic Return of the Jedi scene, you can recreate it by making your very own Sarlacc Bundt cake.
sarlacc pit bundt cake

Jenny Landa’s sarlacc pit cake awesome because it is easy to make and looks realistic. This sarlacc is made from a split chocolate-covered stawberry, chocolate-gummy worms, and almonds. Just bake the cake, blend up some ginger snap cookies for the Tatooine sand, insert your almonds for teeth and put in your chocolate covered gummy worms for tentacles.

It looks delicious. Better to eat it than fall in and have it eat you.

Decapitated Teddy Bear USB Drive Loses His Head for Your Data

This Teddy Bear USB Drive is as cute and adorable as flash drives can get. Heck, they’re so fluffy and doe-eyed that kids would mistake them for toys and grab them from your desk.

When they do, I suggest that you get the USB back though because aside from possibly containing your confidential data, it also has the potential to break their hearts and scar them forever.

teddy bear usb drive
I think the picture says it all. Dear Teddy, headless? Oh, the sheer horror of having to comfort the kid when he accidentally (or purposefully) pulls Teddy’s head off. That said, this flash drive is probably best for storing back-up files or other data that wouldn’t require you to bring it to an actual office. For obvious reasons.

Headless Teddy Bear USB Drive1

On a side note, it’s totally appropriate for Halloween. The Headless Teddy Bear USB Drive is priced from $22 to $38 (USD), depending on the storage capacity. 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB drives are available.

iPad Mini Cases Are Your Dealzmodo-Exclusive Deal of the Day

So you got up early this morning and ordered yourself a spankin’ new iPad Mini. Good for you! Sure, the iPad Mini might not be the best value, and that screen can be called pixel-poor, but there’s still enough there that millions of people will buy one. Considering the fact that the iPad Mini is rolling with almost two-year-old guts, you might be looking to upgrade sooner than you’d like. Make that upgrade a lot easier on your wallet by reselling your iPad for as much as you can. The best way to get maximum resale value from your Apple goods is to baby them. And that means slapping a case on your iPad Mini the second it comes out of the box. More »
