Sony Bravia HX850 Lightning Review: No Gimmicks, Just Great

Cut Straight

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Yes, the holidays are around the corner. This of course means food, festivities, family, decorating the house and wrapping gifts. Boooo. Admittedly I always like the look of the tree after things are wrapped. But getting to that point is painful. It usually entails a chunk of an afternoon devoted to cutting, taping and tying bows. Thank goodness for egg nog. Any devices that can make the holiday time easier are welcomed in my world.

This solution is bound to make the wrapping woes easier. Laser guided scissors – as ingenious as double stick tape or wrapping paper with guide lines on the back. Technically they are Laser Guided Fabric Scissors, for $8.59 at miniinthebox.com among other places.  So yes, for you who sew or scrapbook, they work for you too. Two AA batteries will power the unit. Simply turn on the laser and follow the light as you cut. OK, don’t use it on your buddy’s haircut or anything. It is actually a laser afterall. And though certainly not revolutionary I put them in the family with bagged lettuce – a real “no duh, why didn’t I think of it” gadget. Something that every house needs.

Man arrested for plotting ownership scheme against Facebook

39-year-old Paul Ceglia, a New York wood pellet salesman who claimed he owned a huge stake in Facebook by forging documents, was arrested today and taken into custody by US Postal inspectors at Ceglia’s home in Wellsville, NY. He was arrested on charges that he falsified records and destroyed evidence in a multi-billion dollar scheme to defraud Facebook and the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.

The story goes back two years ago when Ceglia filed a lawsuit against Zuckerberg, claiming that the two signed a contract in April 2003 that promised Ceglia a 50% stake in the social network. However, many of the documents and emails turned out to be falsified, and the date that the fake contract was signed (April 28, 2003) is said to be before the time period that the idea of starting Facebook came up.

Ceglia was running an online business called Streetfax.com back in 2003, and the two of them indeed signed a contract that would pay Zuckerberg for programming work. However, Ceglia claimed that as part of the deal, Zuckerberg promised him at least 50% ownership of Facebook. While the contract for programming work between Ceglia and Zuckerberg is certainly true, authorities ended up finding the real contract on Ceglia’s computer, which made no mention of Facebook or an ownership agreement.

A search through Harvard’s email servers produced no evidence of emails that Ceglia described in his lawsuit, and authorities found falsified existing records on his computer that support Celgia’s many untrue claims. Ceglia was officially charged with one count of mail fraud and one count of wire fraud, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Google shows Windows 8 users how to easily ditch Bing and IE

Windows 8 is here at last and, for the most part, we think it’s pretty great. However, as with all new Windows installs, Internet Explorer and Bing are both present. Most people would rather leave those two behind and use different browsers and search engines instead, and today we’re seeing Google capitalize on that. Google has launched a new “campaign” of sorts to get new Windows 8 owners using both its search engine and Chrome as quickly as possible.

It’s called “Get Your Google Back,” and the big G has even launched a new website with the sole purpose of getting its products on your Windows 8 machine. The process seems painlessly simple – once you’ve got Windows 8 installed on your computer, open up Internet Explorer and direct it to getyourgoogleback.com. Once you’re there, you’ll be prompted to install the Google search app for Windows 8.

The website also has a button to make Google Chrome your default browser, and clicking that button will begin the install of Google’s much-loved Chrome. The whole process is laid out in the handy little video posted below. Google gets bonus points for setting the video to a strikingly good cover of Jackson 5′s I Want You Back.

And there you have it – just a few simple steps and you can have Google search and Chrome tiles right there on your Start screen. Are you a new Windows 8 user who will be following Google’s advice, or are you going for a different search/browser combo? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to check out our story timeline for more on Windows 8!

Apple online radio service in the pipeline?

Apple logoApple is right now the most valuable company in the world, and their stock price has certainly grown by leaps and bounds over the years. The thing is, what goes up must come down, but it does seem as though it will take some time before Apple is subject to the laws of gravity and fall back onto Newton’s proverbial head. One of the upcoming innovations from Apple include the possibility of Apple kicking off their very own streaming service in order to offer consumers yet another choice in an already crowded market that has players such as Spotify, Pandora, and Zune amongst others.

Whispers on the street do seem to point towards the possibility of an Apple online radio service being introduce to the masses sometime in the first quarter of next year. I guess only time will tell whether this ad-supported online radio service is capable of taking on the likes of Pandora. What do you think of Apple’s prospects in this area?

Couple Gets Married in Klingon Wedding Ceremony, Everyone Lives

Nerds will do some pretty strange things for their love of Star Trek. Nerds like newlyweds Jossie Sockertopp and Sonnie Gustavsson. They have the honor of being Britain’s first known couple to get married in a Klingon wedding and were married at a Star Trek convention over the weekend.
klingon wedding
Despite the Klingon tradition of violence and bloodshed, no one was killed during the ceremony  – though we’re not sure about the reception. They met four years ago at the retirement home where they both work, and after watching the episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine where Worf marries Jadzia Dax in a traditional Klingon ceremony, they decided to do the same.

I hope they will be happy for many years, because the Klingon divorce ceremony far less pleasant.
