Samsung ships twice the smartphones as Apple in Q3 2012

samsung_logoSamsung and Apple are definitely not the best of buddies at this point in time, considering how their working relationship has frayed in the past year after throwing lawsuits against one another. Well, the latest news report showed that Samsung did ship twice the number of smartphones compared to Apple in the third quarter of the year, helping them retained the lead position in both handset and smartphone shipments. Senior analyst Michael Morgan said, “Samsung looks to be running away from the pack while Apple’s new product portfolio continues to eat into its decreasing gross margins. Apple will need to ship over 94 million smartphones in Q4 if it wants to match its 2011 shipment growth of 96 percent.”

Nokia has dropped out of the top 5 list for smartphone shipments worldwide in the third quarter of the year for the first time in its history, and we do hope that the grand old dame of the mobile phone world will be able to post better figures with the release of their new Windows Phone 8-powered Lumias. New York Times website blocked in China after expose on Premier Wen Jiabao’s wealth

I guess it was inevitable, although many would deem it to be silly and downright an admission of guilt, as China blocked the website of The New York Times after the paper revealed the kind of wealth that Premier Wen Jiabao and his family built throughout his tenure as a top government official. It seems that Wen’s wife and relatives have raked up at the very minimum, a whopping $2.7 billion, where the majority of it was made while Wen was in still in power. Of course, The New York Times was very careful in their words by not using the word “corruption” since there was no clear evidence that showed off that Wen had acted inappropriately in his wheelings and dealings.

The Chinese government did not take too kindly to this expose, considering how the 18th National Congress is about to take off next month which will ultimately result in a transfer of power. Other websites that received a similar treatment in China include Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

HTC Q3 2012: Operating profit dives 76% and worse times ahead

HTC has revealed its Q3 2012 financial results, and it makes for disappointing reading with revenues and gross profit each dropping by around half compared to a year ago. HTC made NT$70.2bn in the three month period ($2.4bn), down 48-percent from Q3 2011 and 23-percent from Q2 2012, while operating profit was down a huge 76-percent year-on-year, to NT$4.9bn ($167m). It comes as little surprise, however, to HTC itself, which says many of the low sales were in keeping with its expectations.

HTC did manage to trim some of its costs in Q3, however. Operating expenses were down 29-percent year-on-year, to NT$12.6bn ($431m), with the greatest cuts in sales marketing. However, that also meant R&D spend went down; NT$4bn in Q3 2012, versus NT$4.6bn in the previous quarter, and NT$4.7bn a year ago.

Q2 2012 had been seen as a possible turning point for HTC, with the company posting a turnaround in revenues and operating profit. That wasn’t to the extent of 2011 figures, mind, but still a more impressive sight than the altogether dire results from the first quarter of this year.

HTC’s on-hand cash is now down to half of what it was a year ago, NT$50.5bn ($1.7bn), and operating margin now at 7-percent. Things will only get worse, however, in Q4 2012, with predictions of a 1-percent operating margin and revenues of around NT$60bn ($2.1bn).

Apple apologizes without apologizing

You know that there has been a huge furore surrounding the Apple and Samsung court cases, where different courts around the world have come up with different rulings and verdicts even though more or less, the similar kinds of arguments were used by both sides. It was not too long ago that a UK court ruled that Samsung did not copy or infringe upon Apple’s patent, “registered design No. 0000181607-0001,” and Apple has issued a statement concerning the situation. Basically, while they acknowledge Samsung’s “innocence” by the UK court, they also reminded that other European legal jurisdictions beg to differ.

Here is what they have to say.

“The extreme simplicity of the Apple design is striking. Overall it has undecorated flat surfaces with a plate of glass on the front all the way out to a very thin rim and a blank back. There is a crisp edge around the rim and a combination of curves, both at the corners and the sides. The design looks like an object the informed user would want to pick up and hold. It is an understated, smooth and simple product. It is a cool design.”

“The informed user’s overall impression of each of the Samsung Galaxy Tablets is the following. From the front they belong to the family which includes the Apple design; but the Samsung products are very thin, almost insubstantial members of that family with unusual details on the back. They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool.”

What do you think of the entire shebang?

Autonomous wearable robot arms turn you into a Doc Ock, sort of

Some of us do wish that there are more hours in a day, while others wish we had more limbs so that we are able to get more things done throughout the day. Federico Parietti and Harry Asada of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have come up with this pair of semi-autonomous intelligent arms that ought to aid just about anyone in their jobs. All right, you will not quite reach the levels of Doctor Octopus of Spiderman lore just yet, but at least these semi-autonomous arms will extend in front of your body from the hips, where they are strapped to a backpack-like harness which carries the control circuitry. The prototype could be used to assist factory workers in performing tricky DIY tasks.

Dave Barrett, a roboticist and mechanical engineer at Olin College in Needham, Massachusetts, said, “It’s the first time I’ve seen robot arms designed to augment human abilities. It’s bold and out of keeping with anything I’ve ever seen to attach two arms to a human.”

These semi-autonomous limbs were specially designed to learn and hopefully, it can anticipate what their wearer wants in the future. Algorithms in charge of the limbs will be trained first to perform specific tasks. I just hope that there is some form of safety features built into this thing, as the robot arms that are capable of helping us humans are also equally capable of lending a destructive hand, pardon me for the lack of a better word.

Telus plans LG Optimus G launch on November 13th, other carriers remain shy

LG Optimus G review unbranded

LG committed to launching its mostly superb Optimus G to the three major carriers in Canada sometime in November. Just which day the phone would arrive was left a mystery, though, even when Rogers started taking pre-orders. It’s taking another provider to sort things out: Telus has gone on the record with plans to carry the quad-core smartphone starting November 13th, right at the height of what could be a busy month. That’s all that the future-is-friendly network can say for now, although Rogers may have provided the remaining piece of the puzzle when it gave out $130 contract and $600 outright prices. We have a hunch Telus wouldn’t want to be the exception to the rule.
