Hurricane Sandy Gas Shortage Compounds Travel Problems In New York, New Jersey

* Long lines at gas stations as fuel stations run dry

* Those that are open may start running out within 24 hours

* First day of commuting for many without mass transit

By David Sheppard

NEW YORK Oct 31 (Reuters) – More than half of all service stations in the New York City area and New Jersey were shut on Wednesday due to power outages and depleted fuel supplies, frustrating attempts to restore normal life in the wake of powerful storm Sandy, industry officials said.

Reports of long lines, dark stations and empty tanks circulated across the region on Wednesday, with some station owners unable to pump fuel due to a lack of power, while others quickly ran their tanks dry because of intensified demand and logistical problems in delivering fresh supplies.

The lack of working gas stations is likely to compound travel problems in the region, with the New York subway system expected to be out of action for several days and overland rail and bus services severely disrupted.

In New York, gas stations on Long Island and Staten Island also reported shortages, while lengthy lines were seen in Queens.

In New Jersey, where half of all businesses and homes were still without power, more than 80 percent of filling stations are unable to sell gasoline, said Sal Risalvato, head of the New Jersey Gasoline, Convenience, Automotive Association (NJGCA).

“It’s going to be an ugly few days until we can see both power and supplies restored,” he said by telephone.

The problem is not a lack of gasoline in the Northeast, but widespread power outages and the logistical problems created by the storm that are making it difficult to get fuel from refineries and terminals to those who need it.

Kevin Beyer, president of the Long Island Gasoline Retailers Association in Smithtown, New York, estimated that less than half of all gas stations were able to sell fuel on Wednesday morning.

“I have gas in the ground but no power. For many others they’re facing the opposite problem, with power but no gasoline. For the few stations that are lucky enough to have both they’ve got huge lines out front,” Beyer said.

“With the kind of demand they’re seeing they’re likely to run out of gasoline within the next 24 hours.”

Beyer estimated it could take until the end of next week to get all fuel stations operating again.

Four of the region’s six oil refineries were back to full production or increasing run rates on Wednesday, but the second-largest – the Bayway plant in New Jersey – was still idle after flooding damage that traders fear could delay its return to full service. Key import terminals were also still shut.

Power is slowly being restored to the affected regions. The Department of Energy said on Wednesday that 51 percent of homes and businesses in New Jersey were still without power. That is down, however, from around 65 percent on Tuesday afternoon. (Additional reporting by Robert Gibbons in New York; Editing by Claudia Parsons)

Syria Crisis: U.S. Wants Opposition Shakeup

ZAGREB, Croatia — The Obama administration said Wednesday it would push for a major shakeup in Syria’s opposition leadership so that it better represents those dying on the front line, can rally wider support and resist attempts by extremists to hijack the revolution against the Assad regime.

Speaking to reporters in Croatia’s capital, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the United States was suggesting names and organizations that should feature prominently in any new rebel leadership that emerges from talks starting next week in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Unmonday 4.3L speaker makes it easy to configure your surround sound

Surround sound is nice and all, but sometimes it can be a pain in the rear end to set up. Wireless speakers definitely help with that, if you want to quickly change things around, it can take some time. However, a Finnish company by the name of Unmonday has released what they claim to be “the first portable Dolby surround sound, ceramic AirPlay speaker.”

That’s right, it’s made out of ceramic (porcelain, to be exact) and is also compatible with AirPlay. Plus, the octagonal shape of the speaker serves a crucial feature. By simply rolling the speaker to one of its six sides, it’ll change the audio channel of the surround sound. For example, you can lay it on one side to use it as a right-rear speaker, or roll it to another side to change it to a center speaker.

Obviously, the speaker has six different audio channels in total. The other four are right speaker, left speaker, left-rear speaker, and mono mode. In order to accomplish the change in the audio channel with a roll of the speaker, it has built-in motion sensors on the inside that detect when the speaker is at what position, and then activates the appropriate audio channel.

Obviously, porcelain breaks fairly easily when dropped, so we’re not sure how durable the speaker is, but it’s nice to see products being made out of porcelain other than toilets and Chinese dolls. Plus, the speaker looks incredibly nice and it would definitely look good sitting on anyone’s speaker shelf.

The Unmonday 4.3L speaker has special pre-order price of $499, with an estimated regular price of $700. Currently, the speaker still has 7 days to go in its Kickstarter campaign, which is where you can pre-order it now for the special $499. While the speaker shows as not yet reaching its funding goals, the company has said it received $1 million from a private investor, so the project is a go.

Randall Terry Airs Graphic, Anti-Muslim Ad Against Obama In Pennsylvania

A gruesome, anti-Muslim television ad aired Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, insinuating that President Barack Obama is sympathetic to violent extremism in the Middle East.

The ad, first flagged by the liberal group American Bridge 21st Century, was paid for by fringe write-in presidential candidate Randall Terry and aired around the popular 11 p.m. time slot on Pittsburgh’s local FOX affiliate WPHG.

It features a sleeping woman who is struggling through a nightmare. It intersperses graphic images of bloodied corpses and a man being decapitated. A portion of President Obama’s speech in Cairo about bridging the gap between the Muslim and western worlds, and chants of “Allahu Akbar” serve as the background audio in the ad. The woman ultimately wakes up from the nightmare and says, “I can’t vote for Obama again.” The ad ends with Terry on screen saying, “A vote for Obama helps Muslims murder Christians and Jews. I’m Randall Terry and I approve this message.”

AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 hands-on and first impressions

The Nokia Lumia 920 has finally arrived, complete with AT&T‘s 4G LTE data speed and Windows Phone 8 in its final iteration. This device has a 4.5-inch display with 768 x 1280 pixel resolution, making this a massively dense 332 PPI machine, and has no less than Corning Gorilla Glass 2 up front to protect it. Under the hood we’ve got the most advanced mobile operating system Microsoft has ever produced backed up by a fabulous Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz – it’s quick!

This device feels just as great to hold as each of the Nokia devices produced before with the same body – pillowy, round edges yet secure and solid throughout. The back is made entirely of hard plastic – here in red, but coming in several colors in the end, while the front is that one single Gorilla Glass 2 panel you’ll just want to rub up against your cheek its so smooth; there’s just something about those round edges. The top and the bottom of the device are flat and contain a couple of rather impressive speakers and a microUSB port on the bottom and a SIM card tray and single centered headphone jack at the top.

The right side of the device has a set of three buttons – one near the bottom (or the right side if you’re holding it landscape) controls the camera, while the other two are made for power/lock and volume control. The left side of the device has no buttons or ports of any kind. The back of the device also has a camera that’s drool-worthy: Carl Zeiss and Tessar 2.0/26 packing gear with a dual-LED flash to back it up. This camera also works with PureView technology and a host of software features that make it unique – we’ll be presenting a full section on this part of the device in our full review.

The software inside this device is extremely swift. The only loading times that we’ve noticed thus far have been in starting up a game for the first time and in waiting for a data connection – on the other hand, AT&T 4G LTE has been rather responsive on the whole. The display, too, has been suitably impressive – though the glare from the glass might give you a bit of trouble outdoors, the brightness should back you up even in near-direct sunlight.

We’ll be giving this smartphone a full rundown in review form soon – for now, let us know everything you want to know about the AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 and we’ll do our best to cover it all!

White House Halloween Canceled, Crushing New Hope Of Obama Star Wars Party (PHOTO)

The devastation of Hurricane Sandy has understandably forced President Barack Obama to cancel Halloween festivities at the White House this year, as he travels north to survey the superstorm’s wreckage.

It’s a sad consequence of a much sadder tragedy, but we have to say, it’s too bad that there won’t be an opportunity to see the president and first lady flanked by a cohort of Star Wars characters this year. And yes, that has happened.

Windows 8 Pro upgrade for just $15?

You know what they say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. It seems, however, that you are able to take advantage of a loophole in the official Windows Upgrade Offer site to purchase Windows 8 Pro for just $15, never mind you purchased a Windows 7 PC before June 2nd of this year, while informing Microsoft otherwise. This has been tried and tested by some who have said that it works – basically, anyone is able to pick up Windows 8 at Microsoft’s promotional price, where it was originally meant for late Windows 7 adopters only.

Regardless of when you purchased your PC, just inform Microsoft that you bought a Windows 7 PC within the past two months. Should you select a date that is close to June 2nd, you will be prompted for the current Windows 7 key, so choose somewhere nearer to October and you won’t be prompted. The rest of the details can be found in the source link, so if you want to have a clear conscience, skip it, otherwise check it out. No idea on whether Microsoft will close this loophole though, but they have been duly informed.
