LG 84-inch 4K Ultra Definition TV up for grabs, prepare to dig deep

They say that money cannot buy happiness, but it sure as heck can but you the LG 84LM9600 84-inch Ultra HD TV. Video and Audio Center was selected by LG to be the first dealer in the US to carry this cutting edge TV that puts Full HD resolution to shame, delivering four times the amount of detail. The thing is, we do not yet have mass media at that kind of crazy resolution, and neither are there TV channels which broadcast Ultra Definition shows for mass consumption, making this a truly worthy device to lay claim to the much used and abused phrase, “future proof”.

The thing about the LG 84LM9600 84-inch Ultra HD TV is this – it will set you back by $20,000 to see one of these puppies in your living room, but if it is of any consolation to you, the Sony equivalent will cost you another $5,000 more. You get both 2D and 3D viewing options (passive system), a 240Hz refresh rate, Full LED backlighting with local dimming, and Smart TV capability for that kind of money. Interested? I might know someone looking for a new arm or leg…

The Plattan Tweed Edition headphones comes enveloped in hand-woven Harris Tweed, and you know that it is going to be a luxurious experience considering how it is made from 100 percent virgin wool. Sceptre does 32-inch LED HDTV with built-in DVD player

Sceptre had always had a soft spot for those who are looking for the most bang for their hard earned buck, and so far their collection of HDTVs for the masses have appealed on both the features list as well as price front. This time around, Sceptre looks towards media that is slowly becoming extinct – the DVD, by introducing a 32” LED HDTV that has an integrated DVD player. I guess developing countries as well as those who have yet to make the leap from a fat chunky CRT will be the target market that Sceptre is looking at with this puppy.

Touted to deliver a true 31.5-inch crystal clear viewable area, the E325BD-HD offers the kind of design and convenience required for more cramped spaces without compromising on image quality. It will come with 720P LED, a 1366×768 resolution and a true widescreen 16:9 ratio, while a trio of HDMI ports ensure that you will be able to hook up a karaoke machine, another game console and perhaps even a computer to it. The asking price of $599 for the E325BD-HD will surely sit well with many people.

NaNoWriMo progress meter uses Arduino to fight writer’s block, may be its own distraction (video)

NaNoWriMo progress meter uses Arduino to overcome writer's block, may be its own distraction video

We’ve all had that moment where we sit in front of the keyboard and have trouble just getting started. It can be an especially dire problem when the 30-day deadline of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) looms overhead, and that was enough for inventor Steve Hoefer to craft his own USB progress meter. The Arduino-based contraption advances a real-world dial or gauge as the word count reaches the NaNoWriMo servers, giving that extra incentive to meet a daily goal or hit the ultimate 50,000-word mark on time. Hoefer characterizes it as a simple project for those who know their way around an Arduino controller; the toughest part for them may just be constructing the box that keeps the meter presentable. Full instructions are available after the break, although we’d hurry to build the meter before November starts. It could all too easily be the source of the very procrastination we’re trying to avoid.

More Garlic Please!

I looooooooove garlic. The more the better. With Halloween around the corner it is safe to say that I will repel any vampires around. Yet when cooking garlic prep proves annoying. There’s the good old garlic press, which is ok but does not use the entire clove. Or you have a variety of graters. Again, ok but not great. So I often smash it with the knife and slice it. Heck, Paul Sorvino as Paul Cicero in ‘Goodfellas’ slicing it with a razor blade ends up looking like the smartest cook around!

Welcome to a nice compromise between a press and a razor blade: the Joseph Joseph Rocker. It rocks. The simple design mimics a garlic press, but 1) makes less mess 2) uses more of the clove and 3)  is a cinch to clean. Simply put the device on top of a clove and rock it back and forth. The Rocker sieve bottom cuts through the clove to leave you with a tidy pile of minced yummy stuff. Scoop out the garlic and pop the Rocker in the dishwasher and you are done. For only $14.90 at Amazon.com it will make your garlic prep easy.

Oh – if you want to make garlic prep even easier try an E-Z Rol Garlic Peeler from Zak Designs for just $7.28 on Amazon.com. Pop in a clove, large or small, roll the E-Z Rol on the counter top and the peel shucks itself off. Then use your Rocker and you are in business.

Consider yourself more educated on garlic! Now get cooking.

SugarSync introduces app for Windows 8 and Windows RT

SugarSync, the popular cloud storage solution, has announced that they’re bringing apps to both Windows 8 and Windows RT. On top of all the features that SugarSync users already get, the new Windows apps bring some new features as well, such as Live Tiles, Snap View, and the ability to pin the app to the Start screen.

Once you login to the SugarSync app, you’ll notice right away the design of the homescreen, which is obviously very Windows RT-esque. The homescreen shows all your folders that have been synced from your other devices and computers. Tapping on a folder will show you a view of all your sub-folders and files.

Another feature that SugarSync included is called Share Charms. This specifically makes it quicker and easier to share larger files from any Windows 8 device. Another feature is Snap View, which lets you keep SugarSync open while doing other tasks like browsing the web or chatting with a friend — great for multi-taskers.

SugarSync for Windows 8 and Windows RT is available today for both platforms, and can be found by heading to the Windows Store. Both apps are free to download and free to use. You get 5GB of storage space right off the bat, but you can choose from a number of paid accounts if you need some extra storage.

Could DNA Hacking Be Used to Wipe Out World Leaders?

In this month’s issue of the Atlantic, there’s an interesting theory put forth in a story about biowarfare. Drawing on advances in genome decoding, the previous revelations that any stray materials containing the president’s DNA are frequently destroyed, and that Hilary Clinton has ordered the collection of DNA from other foreign leaders, the Atlantic posits the idea that the next evolution in biowarfare will be the development of personalized bioagents designed to attack specific strands of DNA. The strands of world leaders. More »

Ortustech builds the world’s smallest 4K display at 9.6 inches: your tablet has nothing on this

Ortustech builds world's smallest 4K display at 96 inches your tablet has nothing on this

Think that iPad’s Retina display is sharp? Ortustech would argue that it’s old hat. The company’s new LCD occupies a similar dimension at 9.6 inches, but it also carries an extremely dense 3,840 x 2,160 resolution — making it the world’s smallest 4K display at a time when most everyone else is struggling to produce the giant variety. Like with the Japanese firm’s earlier 4.8-inch record-setter, the trick rests in a Hyper Amorphous Silicon TFT (HAST) that lets in more light per pixel and prevents that virtually seamless 458PPI image from becoming unusably dim. Test samples are rolling off the factory lines in November, although we’re not expecting to see Ortustech displays in our tablets anytime soon: sheer performance demands aside, the narrower 160-degree viewing angles and lower 72 percent color gamut better suit the 4K screen to pro video cameras and medical monitors that thrive on sharpness over anything else.

iPad mini pre-orders start tomorrow, most likely at midnight

Apple’s new iPad mini will officially be available for pre-order starting tomorrow, most likely at 12:00 AM Pacific Time (3:00 AM Eastern) based on past Apple pre-order start times. Colloquially, it’s more like tonight at midnight and not really “tomorrow,” but we digress. At that time, you’ll be able to pull out your credit card and reserve your own unit without having to wait in line.

Apple will have all of their iPad mini models up for pre-order, but it gets just a bit tricky when it comes to actual shipping dates. WiFi-only models will begin shipping on November 2 and will be available in Apple stores starting at 8 AM that same day. However, WiFi+4G models are on a different release schedule.

US carriers will begin supplying the iPad mini a week or two after the November 2 ship date, with international carriers coming a bit after that. So, if you pre-order a WiFi+4G model, don’t expect it to arrive in the mail at the beginning of next month. You’ll be waiting a couple more weeks than everyone else.

Pricing for the iPad starts $329 for the 16GB WiFi-only version. The 32GB WiFi-only iPad mini will be $429, while the 64GB version will cost $529. The 16GB WiFi+4G model will be priced at $459, while the 32GB will be $559, and the top-of-the-line 64GB WiFi+4G model will cost $659. Pick your weapon!

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from Verizon has carrier logo on its home button

I am not quite sure what you think of the above, but isn’t it rather strange to see a carrier’s branding appear on the home button of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2? After all, most smartphones and devices that are made available via a mobile carrier already has the carrier’s livery or at least, brand name plastered somewhere, and the home button will certainly take some getting used to for sure.

Right now, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from Verizon can be pre-ordered for $300 a pop, although that would mean it comes with a 2 year contract, and you can choose from black as well as white colors. This is definitely one design trend that we do not really want to see appear in smartphones and perhaps even tablets down the road, as having the brand plastered somewhere at the back and front of the handset is already enough advertisement for one’s eyes. As though you can forget who you’re subscribing to, no? As for others, they will recognize the device first before wondering which carrier you’re rocking to…
