So many things are made in China: DVD players, handbags, adorable shoes, kitchen gadgets, watches, t-shirts, laptops, and more. Some of them are made in happy, shiny factories. Some are born out of deplorable labor conditions that ruin and cost lives. We usually don’t know which. More »
3D render? The latest submission to deviantART? No, that’s a microscopic photo of the blood-brain barrier in a live zebrafish embryo taken by Dr. Jennifer Peters and Dr. Michael Taylor at 20X magnification, and it’s the latest winner of Nikon’s annual Small World Photomicrography Competition. Not surprisingly, the runners-up in the contest (drawn from some 2,000 submissions) are just as impressive — hit the links below for a look at all of them. Those interested in having themselves featured next year (and taking home up to $3,000 in Nikon gear) have until April 30th to get their submissions in for the next competition.
The yet unannounced Samsung Nexus 10 tablet has already been leaked online, its manual at least, or so some quarters say. Why don’t you take a gander at the above and see for yourself? The manual arrived just a few days before Google has announced it, most possibly at an event that is happening on October 29th (which would be next Monday). The photos of the purported Samsung Nexus 10 manual do not reveal any more details apart from a sketch of the expected 10-inch tablet, including both front- and rear-facing cameras.
The Samsung Nexus 10 tablet will be larger than its Asus-manufactured Nexus 7 sibling though, where the former will come with a strip on its back. As to the kind of material used, it is most probably plastic, right where the camera is placed. The images are most probably the real deal, but we will only know for sure when the event rolls around next week. Do you think that the Nexus 10 will be able to give the iPad a run for its money?
This coming November 2nd, we have AT&T making available the Sony Xperia TL for $99.99 a pop, where of course, it will be accompanied by a two-year agreement. The Sony Xperia TL will be the phone that the world’s most popular spy, James Bond, uses, and it will be featured in the upcoming 007 film Skyfall. Sony Mobile is clearly pushing the multimedia capabilities of the Xperia TL, touting it to be Sony’s best HD capture and viewing experiences to date, where you can also share content across multiple devices thanks to its One-touch connectivity with near field communication (NFC). Watch the video above, and you will have a far better idea on what the Xperia TL’s features pack.
Its 13-megapixel primary camera would be the main draw, snapping quality images in a jiffy thanks to its quick launch feature, as it can go from standby mode (sleep) to first shot in a mere 1.5 seconds. The front-facing camera will also be able to shoot HD video whenever you want to, too. Other hardware specifications include a 4.6-inch HD Reality Display (1280 x 720), HDMI, DLNA support, and NFC capability. [Press Release]
Around these parts, we like gadgets, games, LEGOs, and lots of other geeky crap stuff. But we also like our cars. General Motors put out a press release this week about the engine that will be used in the 2014 Corvette, and the gear-heads around here got all tingly.
The 2014 Corvette will debut as a 2014 model in late 2013. It will have a 6.2-liter V8 engine under the hood providing 450 HP, making it the most powerful base Corvette engine ever offered. The engine will also produce 450 pound-foot of torque and promises performance of 0-to-60 mph in under 4 seconds. Any treehuggers out there might be shaking your fists right now chanting “Prius!… Prius!….”
Before you grab your pitchforks, consider that the engine has an EPA estimated 26 mile-per-gallon rating on the Highway. Considering this is a big and powerful sports car engine, 26 MPG is pretty impressive.
If automakers continue to develop standard gasoline-powered engines with such impressive fuel economy I’m not sure EVs and hybrids will ever go mainstream.
If you’re using a touchscreen device for any kind of serious work, a physical keyboard is a must-have accessory. It’s no different for the new iPad mini, although at just 7.78-inches wide when used in landscape mode, this new Bluetooth keyboard case from Zagg is probably going to feel a little cramped. More »
The FCC is typically pretty good at confirming new devices before they’re officially revealed, and today it’s doing just that. A listing for the 3G Nexus 7 has popped up on the FCC’s website (as uncovered by The Digital Reader), which essentially confirms that it will be one of the devices Google announces during its Android event next Monday. In other words, get ready, because there should be a heaping helping of new Android devices revealed at the event.
Of course, there’s no way to be 100% positive until Google gives us some official word, but our friends at Android Community point out that this new device is called the “ASUS ME370TG.” The original Nexus 7 was the “ASUS ME370T,” so it isn’t exactly difficult to connect the dots in this particular instance. What’s unknown at this point, however, is whether or not this 3G Nexus 7 will also be the 32GB model we’ve been hearing so much about.
At the moment, we’re going to go ahead and assume that it is, but it’s also possible that Google will reveal separate Wi-Fi-only and 3G Nexus 7s with 32GB of storage. In any case, it seems pretty clear now that Google will be announcing some kind of new Nexus 7 model during its event, so it’s officially time to get excited. After all, a new Nexus 7 model isn’t the only thing Google is rumored to have up its sleeve.
Rumors also say that it will be revealing the LG Nexus 4, along with the Samsung Nexus 10. It appears that there will be plenty of Nexus to go around, so now all we need to do is play the waiting game until October 29 arrives. Monday is just four short days away – are you ready for whatever Google has planned?
At this rate, there might not be much new to show in Google’s playground. ASUS has passed a ME370TG tablet through the FCC’s approval process — which sounds ordinary, until you remember that the current Nexus 7 is the ME370T. The G, from all appearances, refers to 3G: there’s an Intel XMM 6260 chipset inside supplying HSPA that would work for all North American GSM carriers, and most likely beyond. We don’t know whether any of the rumored capacity changes will carry over, or even if this tablet will necessarily surface at Google’s October 29th event, but the filing and recent out-of-stock notices suggest more than ever that the reference Android tablet is near a significant makeover.

With all the hubbub surrounding today’s Microsoft event, who can blame Amazon for wanting to get in on the action? The mega-retailer used the opportunity to announce the Windows 8 version of its popular reading app. Interested parties can download the thing for free from the Windows Store, giving them access to the company’s selection of 1.5 million titles. The app is available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese and offers up good old Amazon features like Whispersync.
