New Kindles start shipping today in Europe, Lovefilm launches on Kindle Fire

As promised, Amazon has started shipping its latest Kindles on the other side of the Atlantic, with the Kindle Paperwhite as well as the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD making the trip. Amazon’s branded video services did not make the trip, so Lovefilm is filling in, offering a free month to buyers of either Fire tablet. Despite the switch in names, the Kindle Fire / Fire HD Lovefilm app will support features owners have gotten used to in the US like Whispersync pause / resume across devices, watch list and X-Ray for Movies that brings in extra info about any actors or scenes that are being watched. The Kindle Fire 8GB is available for £129/€159, while the Fire HD in 16GB or 32GB editions costs £159/€199 and £199/€249, respectively. The Kindle Paperwhite isn’t invited to the video party, but it starts at £109 for the basic model or £169 with 3G.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 available for preorder at Verizon and AT&T

Samsung‘s much-anticipated behemoth, the Galaxy Note 2, is now available for pre-order from Verizon and AT&T. The ship-by date is listed as November 27. The phone was launched earlier today at Samsung’s Galaxy Note II World Tour 2012 NYC press event, where we got our hands on the giant Verizon-branded smartphone.

You can nab the Galaxy Note 2 for $299 with a 2-year contract from Verizon or AT&T. If you don’t want a service contract, the price jumps to a pretty hefty $699.99 from Verizon, and $649.99 from AT&T. The device is available in white and black, and shipping is free. Verizon offers the largest 4G LTE network in the US.

The Galaxy Note 2 is one of a few phablets on the market, a venerable mixture of smartphone and tablet with the right dimensions to leave you forever wondering which device it better qualifies as. The 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display is its biggest feature, pun intended, but it also packs a wide variety of other high-end features, making its price tag suddenly seem a bit more reasonable. The smartphone includes the S Pen, which helps further solidify its feel as a miniature tablet.

Inside the Galaxy Note 2, you’ll find a quad-core 1.6GHz Exynos processor, up to 16GB of storage space (with expansion up to 64GB), and 2GB of RAM. On the back is a high-quality 8MP camera with an LED flash, and on the front a 1.9MP camera for video calls. The camera can record video in 1080p, and has a 4x zoom. The Note 2 is rated for up to 15 hours of talk time and 12.5 days of standby time.

Nissan Leaf could be new face of all-electric taxi fleet

One great thing about a fully electric vehicle is this, there is no need to worry about emissions, and it runs smooth and silently. The thing is, the range and power on electric vehicles are not exactly top notch, but what happens when where you want to travel is just limited to a certain geographical area? Then an all-electric ride makes sense, and the Electric Vehicle Taxicab Company intends to possess the largest all-electric fleet of taxis in the US, where they will complement their fleet with 56 DC fast-charging stations in the company’s service area.

According to Electric Vehicle Taxicab founder Malik Khattak, these cabs will serve the dual purpose of reducing elimination while cutting down on repair costs, simply because there would be virtually no oil changes to perform. Nissan Leafs have been shortlisted to be the ride of choice, where it has also been tested as taxis in New York and Mexico City prior.

LaCie Porsche Design P’9223 Slim SSD for Macs

Porsche Design carries the German supercar name, which is why when it comes to the kind of computer peripherals that it churns out, we more or less look forward to something stunning and of high performance caliber. Well, we are pleased to say that LaCie’s most recent release of the Porsche Design hard drive will target Mac owners, where it delivers the kind of performance one would expect from a supercar brand name, although this is on the hard drive front. As for the P’9223 Slim SSD, it is said to have shed 33% of its original thickness compared to its predecessor, but despite that, it does not compromise in terms of storage space with the option of a 120GB SSD, making sure your USB 3.0 port is well utilized in the process. Should everything run fine and dandy, then you can say just about all Macs released this year will be able to play nice with these offerings from LaCie.

It will cost you $150 for the flash-based edition of the P’9223, but if you do not mind plodding along at the pace of a hard drive, then all you need to do is hand over a Benjamin and you’re good to go.

Samsung Smart TVs receive Amazon Instant Video streaming app

Samsung has made their 2012 range of Smart TVs all the more appealing by introducing the Amazon Instant Video streaming app from today onwards, allowing you to enjoy movies as well as TV shows via an Internet connection. Of course, you could say that one is experiencing a sensory overload considering how other options in the market already include Blockbuster, Hulu Plus, Netflix and Vudu.I guess having yet another choice for the mass market would not hurt, right? If not, there would not be a myriad of smartphones out there in the market as it is.

Samsung will also introduce a redesigned interface that has been specially tuned for a big screen experience, delivering quick access to queuing, recommendations and captioning. I guess you can safely say that if you have always wanted something larger than what you saw on your Kindle Fire HD, this is it. [Press Release]

Open webOS-powered HDTVs said to be on the way from… LG?

If you were wondering what was next for webOS now that it’s gone all open source on us, webOS Nation chimes in with word that Gram is working with LG to bring it to connected HDTVs. Several names from the HP / Gram team are dropped as being involved in the effort, which reportedly was under way even before HP revealed it would spin the project off as an independent. Of course, when we actually saw Open webOS 1.0 it was already stretching to fill the space of an HP TouchSmart computer screen (project architect Steve Winston specifically mentioned hotel kiosks as a possibility, a market LG is all over) so it makes sense that larger displays have been a target. With LG supposedly both looking to replace its existing NetCast smart TV platform and unhappy with Google TV based on its rate of adoption and Google’s terms, engineers have been working to port the software to its dual-core L9 chipset. In the past LG has pursued voice and motion control, the aforementioned Google TV integration and even Plex support to make its smart TVs more appealing, and has founded the Smart TV Alliance for cross platform apps. We only have to wait until CES 2013 to see if webOS is next up to power its efforts, stay tuned.

Huawei Ascend Y available from US Cellular for $30 with contract

Amidst the accusations of espionage and claims of innocence, Huawei is still plugging along in the US. Starting today, the Huawei Ascend Y smartphone is available at US Cellular for a mere $30 with a two-year contract. According to the press release, this low-end gadget is aimed at consumers who need “a multi-functional, easy-to-use device.”

While the price is within just about everyone’s budget, the specs are about what you’d expect from a $30 phone. The Ascend Y runs Android Gingerbread 2.3, and features a 3.5-inch 480×320 display. On the back you’ll find a 3.2-megapixel camera that can record video in addition to snapping pictures.

Perhaps a bit unexpected is the Ascend Y’s DTS Envelo feature, which provides “virtual surround sound to enhance audio experience.” Battery life is rated at 4.8 hours of talk time and 12.7 days of standby time. Says the press release, “The Huawei Ascend Y builds on the success of the Ascend range of smartphones and delivers on Huawei’s commitment to make technology accessible for more people globally.”

Chinese company Huawei has been caught up in controversy after US lawmakers recommended that the company be avoided due to its potential use by the Chinese government for spying. Huawei denied the claims, stating that it would be willing to provide unrestricted access to its software code. A source claiming to be close to the issue told Reuters earlier this month that the White House had found no evidence to support the accusations.
