ESO assembles 9-gigapixel image of 84 million stars

ESO has released a ginormous 9-gigapixel image of 84 million stars taken via the VISTA infrared survey telescope at its Paranal Observatory. Featuring the center of the Milky Way, this huge picture is the by-product of an international team of astronomers, and will be used to help study our galaxy. Just how big is 9-gigapixels? Printed “with the resolution of a typical book,” it would be almost 30 feet long and 23 feet high.

Roberto Saito, the lead author of the study, had this to say: “By observing in detail the myriads of stars surrounding the centre of the Milky Way we can learn a lot more about the formation and evolution of not only our galaxy, but also spiral galaxies in general.” Spiral galaxies feature their oldest stars in the center, something astronomers call the galaxy’s bulge. Seeing the Milky Way’s bulge is difficult because of copious amounts of dust.

According to the study’s co-author Dante Minniti, astronomers have to observe infrared light when dust is an issue. To get this image of our galaxy’s middle, the team used VISTA, which stands for Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy. The team used data from VISTA Variable in the Via Lactea program to assemble the mega image.

This is the first time the Milky Way’s bulge has been cataloged like this, containing ten times the number of stars of previous efforts. Said Minniti: Each star occupies a particular spot in this diagram at any moment during its lifetime. Where it falls depends on how bright it is and how hot it is. Since the new data gives us a snapshot of all the stars in one go, we can now make a census of all the stars in this part of the Milky Way.”

Samsung 2012 Smart TVs get Amazon Instant Video streaming app, synchronicity with your Kindle Fire

Samsung 2012 Smart TVs get Amazon Instant Video streaming app, synchronicity with your Kindle Fire

Samsung just sweetened the streaming video pot for current and would-be owners of its modern Smart TVs. Viewers who’ve been craving Amazon Instant Video can download an app today to watch movies and TV shows through their 2012 set’s internet link, in the event options for Blockbuster, Hulu Plus, Netflix and Vudu weren’t already enough. It’s not necessarily a cut-and-dried port, either — Samsung is flaunting a redesigned interface tuned for big-screen distances and quick access to queuing, recommendations and captioning. Amazon junkies who wanted a larger canvas than their Kindle Fire HD now can’t get much larger.

Samsung infringed on Apple patents, judge rules

You win some, you lose some. In this case, Samsung is the loser, with a federal trade panel judge ruling that the company infringed on Apple‘s patents. This is the latest in a long patent war that the two companies have been engaged in for quite some time, and comes after the South Korean company’s brief victory in the Netherlands.

The complaint was filed by Apple in the middle of last year with the US International Trade Commission. In it, Apple stated that Samsung was infringing on its patents via the Galaxy tablet and the Transform, Fascinate, and Captivate smartphones. Judge Thomas Pender has issued a preliminary decision on the matter, saying that the Korean company had infringed on four of the six patents in dispute.

The four patents ruled infringed upon include one that shows two images, one of them translucent, as well as a patent involving touch screen user input interpretations. In February, the International Trade Commission will make a decision on whether Pender’s decision will stand. This is Apple’s latest win, with a California jury finding that Samsung had infringed upon iPhone and iPad features, something for which it was ordered to shell out $1.05 billion in damages.

Apple recently distanced itself from Samsung, which has been its long-term supplier of hardware for the company’s products. Earlier this month, Apple then took steps to cut off its reliance on the Korean company as much as contractually possible. Presently, Apple is seeking to have the infringing Samsung products perma-banned, but no word on how that’ll play out has been issued.

Ugh, Verizon Plastered Its Logo on the Samsung Galaxy Note II Home Button

This is awful. Utterly, completely, corporate suit wearing, slicked back hair smelling, awful. Verizon stamped its logo on top of the new Samsung Galaxy Note II. Do you see it? Yes. That’s right, the Verizon logo is on the freaking phone’s home button. Covering it. Are you kidding me. More »

LaCie intros Porsche Design drive for Macs with SSD and USB 3.0, helps the speed match the name

LaCie intros Porsche Design drive for Macs with SSD and USB 30, helps the speed match the name

Porsche Design may not be directly involved in building German supercars, but there are certain expectations to be met, aren’t there? LaCie is rolling out a new version of its Porsche Design hard drive skewed towards Mac owners that should offer more of the performance you’d associate with the automotive brand. The P’9223 Slim SSD is a third thinner than its ancestor but carries the option of a 120GB SSD that makes the most of the USB 3.0 port. If all runs well, nearly any Mac launched in 2012 can shuttle data along at a brisk 400MB per second. Demanding Mac fans will need to pay $150 for the flash-based edition to have the P’9223 feel truly Porsche-like; others only have to spend $100 if they’re content with the Volkswagen pace of a 500GB spinning drive.

Sprint rolls out new 4G tablet data plans November 11th, likely just in time for new(er) iPad, iPad mini

As a carrier trailing Verizon and AT&T in terms of subscribers and now 4G coverage, Sprint has made it a habit to undercut the other two on value. While its upcoming tablet-specific data plans won’t necessarily be cheaper, they do promise up to 20 percent more data for the same price and still do not require a contract. Sure to come in handy now that it’s offering the fourth generation iPad and iPad mini on its network, they are 300MB/$14.99, 3GB/$34.99, 6GB/$49.99, or 12GB for $79.99. There are also $10 and $15 offers for customers that also have Sprint smartphones that offer 100MB and 1GB of data, respectively, and activation fees for all 3G/4G tablets are being waived for a limited time. As you’ll recall, Verizon and AT&T’s offerings include 2GB/$30 (3GB/$30 on AT&T), 5GB/$50 and on Verizon, 10GB/$80 packages. Even if you’re not an Apple user these plans apply for all 4G capable slates, with Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 specifically mentioned. For those planning to pick up one of the latest iPads with wifi + cellular capability however, their mid-November launch date may have narrowed slightly , since these plans go into effect November 11th. Check the press release after the break or a post on its Sprint Community blog for more info.
