Dutch court rules that Samsung didn't infringe on Apple multi-touch patent

Once again, a decision has been made on an Apple versus Samsung patent dispute. This time, it’s a Dutch court in the Hague, ruling that Samsung does not infringe on a Cupertino patent relating to certain multi-touch commands that the Korean firm implements in some of its Galaxy phones and tablets. This isn’t the first time that the Netherlands-based court has found in favor of Samsung, and Apple had already lost a preliminary injunction on this same patent last year. Reuters also reports that the Hague court’s decision comes in the same week that the International Trade Commission is expected to decide about further patent disputes between the two firms, which went in favor of Apple the last time around. At the very least, this long and bumpy ride isn’t over yet.

Apple unveils stunning new iMac

Apple has done it again, and after so many generations of the iMac, here we are with the slimmest version to date. The all-new iMac sports one of the most stunning industrial designs ever, where it will be accompanied by a brilliant display alongside reduced reflection, not to mention faster processors that make up part of Intel’s third generation quad-core Ivy Bridge processors, powerful NVIDIA graphics as well as an innovative new storage option known as Fusion Drive. The new iMac sports high-performance technology into an aluminum and glass enclosure, sporting up to 40% less volume compared to its predecessor, an edge which measures all of just 5mm thin.

Not only that, the completely reengineered display is said to have reduced reflection by up to 75% without sacrificing on the kind of brilliant color and contrast that one has come to know and love. The new design sees the cover glass come in a fully laminated manner, where its anti-reflective coating is applied via a high-precision plasma deposition process. All iMacs that ship have been individually color calibrated thanks to an advanced spectroradiometer.

Underneath the hood, there lies a 3rd generation quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, and if you feel the need for more speed, you can opt to upgrade it to Core i7. It carries a minimum of 8GB RAM and a 1TB hard drive, although if your budget permits, you are able to pick up your iMac with up to 32GB RAM as well as a spanking new 3TB hard drive. Alternatively, you can opt for up to 768GB of flash storage if ultimate performance is one of your needs. Other connectivity options include a couple of Thunderbolt and a quartet of USB 3.0 ports.

As for Fusion Drive, this innovative new storage option offers customers the performance of flash storage without compromising on the capacity that one gets with a hard drive. This means 128GB of flash memory has been merged with a standard 1TB or 3TB hard drive, resulting in a single storage volume. I would say this is Apple’s fancy name for a hybrid drive, nothing new or groundbreaking in the market as hard drive manufacturers have come up with that in the past years.

The 21.5” and 27” iMac will retail from $1,299 and $1,799 onward.

Holiday Wii bundles pair Just Dance 4 or Skylanders Giants from $130

Nintendo has revealed a pair of new Wii bundles in the hope of slowing the dwindling sales of the console, promising a choice of titles and pricing from $129.99. The first bundle pairs the white Wii, a matching Wii controller, and a Nunchuck, with Just Dance 4, and will go on sale from November 4 in the US. If you’re not into dancing, however, never fear: there’s a second, even more feature-backed bundle to choose.

$149.99 gets you a blue Wii – again, with a matching Wiimote and Nunchuck – as well as Activision’s Skylanders Giants. You also get a Portal of Power, two Skylanders characters, and an exclusive Giant Skylander, pairing a console game with traditional physical toys.

Despite Nintendo’s best efforts, sales of the Wii continue to fall. In the company’s latest financial results, announced earlier today, the console was a black mark in comparison to the 3DS, which saw rising sales figures as a result of the larger 3DS XL version.

On the horizon, meanwhile, is the Wii U. That will go on sale in the US on November 18, alongside rather than replacing the Wii, which will stick around as a budget option; both of these bundles cost at most half of the price of the entry-level Wii U package.

AT&T Q3 2012: 6.1m smartphone sales and 4.7m iPhone activations but revenues flat

AT&T activated 4.7m iPhones in Q3 2012, the carrier has confirmed, with 44.5m subscribers now using smartphones, and helping push average revenue per subscriber to a record $65.20 apiece. The company announced its latest financial figures this morning, with revenues of $31.5bn flat in comparison to the same period a year ago; operating income actually fell, meanwhile, down from $6.2bn to $6.0bn.

Nonetheless, AT&T is calling it a success, highlighting the climb in free cash flow. That – cash from operating income minus capital expenditures – rose to $6.5bn, and is on course to hit $18bn+ by the end of the year, as much as $3bn more than AT&T’s previous guidance.

Digging deeper, data revenues proved increasingly valuable, up by more than $1bn year-on-year to $6.6bn, and nearly 2m people signed up to AT&T’s Mobile Share plans within five weeks. More than a third of Mobile Share users are on the 10GB or above plans. Almost 64-percent of AT&T wireless postpaid subscribers are using smartphones, or 44.5m users, a rise of 1.4m from Q2; more than 40-percent of those customers use a 4G-capable device.

AT&T doesn’t talk iPhone sales, only activations; it says it activated 4.7m, 18-percent of which were new to the network, though they aren’t necessarily all new sales. Overall, though, 6.1m smartphones of all types were sold in the three month period, heavily outweighing featurephone sales, at 81-percent.

As for AT&T U-verse, there are now 200,000 more subscribers for TV and 613,000 more for wireline internet.

Apple unveils the iPad mini

It is Apple picking time today, and here we are with a spanking new iPad for the mass market. In fact, you can say that if the late Steve Jobs were to be around today, there might not be an iPad mini, or he would unapologetically claim that there is a need in the 7” tablet market that Apple wants to create upon the iPad mini’s announcement, never mind the fact that he did insinuate that the 7” tablet market is dead in the water right from the get go, which was why Apple came up with the iPad in the first place. Well, the new iPad mini sports a totally new iPad design that makes it 23% thinner (some say it is literally pencil thin) and 53% lighter than the third generation iPad. Sporting a stunning 7.9-inch Multi-Touch display, FaceTime HD and iSight cameras, you know that the iPad mini is a bundle that was made to sell. The thing is, is the target market those who have yet to jump aboard the iPad bandwagon, and will current iPad owners bite as well?

Sporting up to 10 hours of battery life, it is small enough to hold in one hand. Meh, nothing new here, as 7” tablets from other hardware manufacturers have been able to do that for the longest time already. Apple claims that the 7.9-inch Multi-Touch display delivers a similar iPad experience that we all know and love, offering 35% more screen real estate compared to Android-powered 7-inch tablets, in addition to having 67% more usable viewing area when browsing the web. A dual-core A5 chip runs the show from underneath the hood, while the front-facing FaceTime HD camera and a 5 megapixel iSight camera at the back with advanced optics ensures you are able to capture amazing images on the move.

Not only that, theiPad mini comes with dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi support, while Wi-Fi + Cellular models will be able to support ultrafast wireless standards, such as LTE and DC-HSDPA. The iPad mini with Wi-Fi models will come in black and slate or white and silver colors from November 2nd onwards, where the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models will go for $329, $429 and $529, respectively. Top up $130 if you want the Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad mini at its respective storage space.

Nuance Dragon Mobile Assistant launches on Android, but only on ICS for now

Nuance Dragon Mobile Assistant launches on Android

Dragon Go! has been given the elbow, with the slightly more professional sounding Dragon Mobile Assistant taking its place. Nuance has expanded on its predecessor’s verbal commands, with new functionality for maps (you’ll be able to bark direction requests at the new app and it’ll plan the route), alongside a hands-free wake-up feature activated by saying “Hi Dragon” — we hope you have a high embarrassment threshold. Other Siri-esque features include weather updates and dictated SMS and email responses. The beta app can be downloaded from today, although compatibility is limited to Android Ice Cream Sandwich and above for now. Nuance is promising more features and increased availability later this year.

Samsung, LG and Pantech reportedly gearing up to release 1080p Full HD smartphones in 2013

There aren’t too many mobile devices out there that can boast a full 1080p HD display, save for the HTC J Butterfly, HTC’s take on the phablet. Well unsurprisingly it seems that other manufacturers for Android have plans to catchup and according to MK News, it looks like Samsung, LG and Pantech have plans to launch 1080p smartphones come 2013. According to the report, these high-end smartphones are expected to be introduced before the second half of next year, and if the report is accurate, we guess it wouldn’t be completely unreasonable of us to expect that the Samsung Galaxy S4 could sport such a display. Either way with LG’s flagship, the Optimus G being launched not too long ago, we have to wonder what sort of device LG might have up their sleeves. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled, but are you guys looking forward to 1080p Full HD displays next year, or do you think the current-gen of displays are good enough and going 1080p Full HD is just another marketing gimmick that manufacturers will use to advertise their phones?

8GB Nexus 7 not available on Google Play store, 32GB model arriving soon?

Word on the street has it that a 32GB Nexus 7 will soon be offered by Google, although rumors have suggested that it could replace the 8GB version of the tablet. It looks like Google is getting ready to introduce the tablet because if you were to surf on over to the Play store, you will notice that the 8GB version of the Nexus 7 is no longer available and clicking on it reveals a message that says, “coming soon”. While it was not stated explicitly, we can only assume that the message is referring to the 32GB of the Nexus 7. If the rumors are to be believed, the 8GB Nexus 7 could be phased out, leaving just the 16GB and 32GB models available, with the 16GB model expected to have its price lowered in the process. It is possible that the 8GB model could be sold out, hence the message, but given the number of leaks and rumors of a 32GB Nexus 7 tablet we’ve seen so far, it’s hard to believe that this is a mere coincidence.

T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy Note 2 now available for purchase

We reported earlier this month that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 would be arriving on T-Mobile’s network later this Fall, and the good news is that if you were planning on picking up the device, it seems that T-Mobile’s online store (source link below) has listed the device as available for purchase. It will set you back a pretty hefty $369.99 with a new two-year contract, although we guess if you’d rather not be tied down, you can pay retail for it at $649.99. Either way it’s definitely not cheap but given its specs, we guess some of you guys can justify its price.

So what will you bet getting for your money? In case you missed our coverage of the Galaxy Note 2, you can expect a whopping 5.5” 720p display, a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos processor under the hood, 2GB of RAM, an 8MP rear-facing camera, S-Pen and Wacom support and will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean preinstalled. So, who’s planning on picking one up for themselves? In the meantime be sure to check out our review of the device here.
