Huawei offers unrestricted access to software code in light of spying allegations

Earlier this month, Huawei was one of two Chinese manufacturers (the other being ZTE) accused of potentially spying for the Chinese government. The US House Intelligence Committee recommended that the company be avoided. Huawei retorted that the accusations are baseless, and now has offered to provide unrestricted access to its software code to prove its innocence.

Huawei had responded with a statement that the Chinese company “has a well-demonstrated track record of responsibly adhering to local laws and regulations in the markets in which it does business.” A little over a week after the accusation was made, a source who claimed to be close to the matter told Reuters that the White House had found no evidence of Huawei engaging in espionage. Now, to further its push in clearing its name, chairman of the Huawei Australia branch, John Lord, has stated that “Huawei is willing to offer complete and unrestricted access to our software source code and our equipment in such an environment.”

The environment he refers to is a transparent framework in which foreign vendors can be subjected to security testing procedures. Said Lord, this system would allow tech products made overseas to be evaluated independently, and that such a setup is necessary for safety. The UK already has a similar system in place to which Lord referred when making the proposal.

In addition to the proposed avoidance in the U.S., Huawei was shunned by Canada in light of the accusations, which was previously considering using the company as part of its upcoming government communications network. Adding another blow into the mix, Huawei was also banned from being involved in the construction of Australia’s National Broadband Network. Says John Lord, “We are disappointed [in the ban], we have accepted the government’s decision and we have moved on.”

‘Sons Of Anarchy’: Joel McHale Can’t Outrun The Club, Gemma Can’t Dodge A Semi (VIDEO)

Joel Mchale presumably finished up his guest stint on “Sons of Anarchy” in one of only two possible scenarios. As he’d conned Gemma out of her vehicle, McHale’s character was either going to wind up dead, or lying on the ground after a serious beating. He was lucky it was Nero who made the final call, as he lives to breathe another day.

Following up on last week’s reveal that Clay was behind the home invasions, with the Nomads doing the dirty work, Clay tried to work his magic and get all blame shifted away from him. He convinced the Nomads to take out Unser — who’d pretty much figured it all out — and then made sure things went a different way. The Nomads thought Clay was there to keep Unser from his weapons. He was really there to help Unser kill them.

With two down, there’s only one Nomad left out there who knows the truth. Who will get to him first? Was he the one behind the attempt to take out — or was it just to warn? — Chibs and Jax? They were shot at by two men in a van, and managed to take one down. When they pulled his mask off, the guy was black. That would seem to tie Pope into the shooting, but it could be subterfuge?

Huawei offers unrestricted access to software code

Huawei logoRemember how earlier this month, both Huawei and ZTE were warned by the US Congressional Committee that they could not be trusted? Well, it seems that Chinese giant Huawei has taken a proactive step to win back some of the trust and to counter such a warning by offering unrestricted access to its software code, hoping that this move would be able to alleviate the public’s fears of the company being a security risk to the country. If we were to put it in layman’s terms, this would mean Huawei has lain on its back, allowing all and sundry to rub its belly.

John Lord, the chairman of the Australian arm of Huawei, did concede that Huawei did a rather poor job when it came to explaining its work, and will obviously need to take steps to change that. John Lord did suggest to start a national cyber security center that will independently evaluate all overseas-made technology products, in addition to making available their software code to all and sundry to pick apart at the seams if they want to. Do you think this is a true gesture of their sincerity?

Nikon 1 to receive more lenses

If you happen to own the Nikon 1 digital camera, then you are in for a treat as Nikon has just announced an expansion to their lens range for the Nikon 1 under the 1 NIKKOR lens family. In fact, consumers will be on the receiving end of not one or two, but three new lenses. These new lenses are sure to expand your photo shooting horizon, where they will be the 32mm medium-telephoto fixed focal length lens with a fast maximum aperture of f/1.2 optimal for portraits exhibiting significant background blur; a vibration-reduction (VR) equipped 6.7-13mm f/3.5-5.6 ultra wide-angle zoom lens that is the first 1 NIKKOR lens to offer a 100° angle of view; and a compact and lightweight 10x zoom lens covering the 10-100mm range of focal lengths with maximum apertures of f/4-5.6, which makes this the ideal lens to tote around everywhere regardless of the situation.

So far, Nikon has remained mum on the actual release dates for these lenses, and neither do we know just how much of a premium will Nikon slap on them, but we do hope to be there to catch the news when it breaks and relay it to our readers! [Press Release]

GM to patch Chevrolet Volts with firmware update

It looks like cars are not exempt from this thing known as firmware updates now, as General Motors (GM) has announced that their 2013 Chevrolet Volt (approximately 4,000 of these Volt plug-in hybrids were affected) would be on the receiving end of a firmware upgrade, and this exercise can be done after you send your ride back to your dealer. According to Michelle Malcho, a spokeswoman for General Motors, who mentioned over a telephone interview, this firmware upgrade is a must have, just to make sure that your precious new Chevy Volt would not end up stalling when in motion.

The issue lay with a delayed-charging function, where this particular feature enabled owners to preselect a convenient time to charge the Volt’s batteries, for example, when the electrical rates are at their lowest. Choosing such an option, however, would see the software run amok and could result in the electric motor shutting off at a different time, even while you drive. Good thing the power steering and brakes are still working under such situations, but it is dangerous nonetheless.

‘The X Factor’ Top 16: Demi Lovato And Simon Cowell Choose Their Top Fours (VIDEO)

Thanks to a baseball postseason rain delay, last week’s episode of “The X Factor” Top 16 reveal was abruptly cut in half. So Fox scheduled the show on Tuesday night at 9:30 p.m. ET so the judges could finish revealing their full Top 16.

Last week, L.A. Reid and Britney Spears wrapped picking their groups’ contestants who would make it to the live shows. So what mattered this week was seeing which four singers Demi Lovato picked for the Young Adults category, and which four Groups made it through Simon Cowell.

For Lovato, one choice was particularly difficult. Jillian Jensen had moved the judges at her initial audition, but Lovato felt she simply wasn’t ready. But don’t feel too bad for her, as The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Jensen worked with The Fontaine Brothers on an anti-bullying track released to iTunes already.
