‘Extreme Cheapskates’: Millionaire Forages For Food, Pees In Bottles (VIDEO)

Most people have an image in their heads of what a millionaire lifestyle would be like. Well, the latest episode of “Extreme Cheapskates” throws that fantasy right out the window and into the woods — where Victoria forages for food. According to her boyfriend, Victoria is a millionaire. Perhaps she got that way by never spending a cent. Ever.

She’s so beyond frugal that she pees in bottles to avoid having to flush, showers at a gym — despite her shower working just fine — and uses appliances that are nearly fifty years old, except that she doesn’t even always do that. To save on costs, she cooked a meal for her family on a makeshift stove outside

And then there’s how she gets her food. Victoria was proud that she gets her food from a combination of dumpster diving and foraging in the woods “for wild edibles.”

Amazon Looks East: Launches First Japanese Language Kindle, The Paperwhite; Debuts Japanese Kindle Store; Sells Kindle Fire Tablets

japan kindle fire

Take that, Rakuten! Amazon continues to extend its reach into new markets and increase its focus in Asia: today it announced pre-orders for its first Japanese-language Kindle, the Paperwhite, and, in another first, it has now extended its Kindle Store into Japan, opening with 50,000 titles in the library. It also today made Japan the latest market for Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets: it kicked off sales of the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire in the country.

The news comes as Amazon’s local rival, Rakuten, continues to press ahead with its ambition to match and beat Amazon at its own game both at home and further afield. In addition to is main business selling books and other goods online, Rakuten recently also introduced its own e-reader, the Kobo Touch Reader, aiming it at the same low-cost market as Amazon by pricing it at $99. Rakuten in May made a $100 million investment in Pinterest, which it has already started to leverage by integrating its marketplace with the platform.

Given that Amazon has already been selling books in Japan for the past 12 years, it has definitely not rushed to launch its Kindle line in Japan — so is today’s news a sign that it must now be feeling Rakuten’s rivalry?

“After twelve years of selling print books on Amazon.co.jp, we are excited to offer the millions of Amazon.co.jp customers the new Kindle Store, with the largest selection of the books people want to read, the largest selection of Oricon best sellers in books, bunko, and manga, and over 50,000 Japanese-language titles—all available to anyone with a Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Fire, Android phone, Android tablet, iPhone, or iPad,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO.

Among the 50,000 Japanese-language titles in the new store, 10,000 will be free. There is also a strong emphasis on graphic literature, hugely popular in Japan, with 15,000 manga titles.

The Kindle Store, Amazon says, will open for business October 25 with some 68 Japanese-language titles exclusive to Amazon. Meanwhile, the Kindle Paperwhite will sell for ¥8,480 ($106). Amazon had announced its intention to extend its Kindle brand into Japan in September. That followed with the company extending its mobile app distribution portal to Japan earlier in October.

When Amazon launched its first Kindle e-reader in 2007, the company was criticised for its slow international rollout of the device. The reasons, it seemed, were three-fold: the keyboard issue (for non-English countries); carrier agreements for unlimited data usage; and trying to get the right mix of localized e-book content.

The move to touchscreen, keyboard-free devices, however, has made the hardware element of going international significantly easier for the company. The growing use of tablets and e-readers, meanwhile, has given rise to significantly more content available for the devices. Lastly, the fact that many are using WiFi as the primary way of connecting their new devices means that the company has less of a need to iron out local carrier negotiations.

It also helps Amazon immensely to make its device footprint as wide as possible. Not only does that mean much better economies of scale for making the device, but given that it’s pinning at least some of its hope on advertising revenues generated on those devices, increasing the number of Kindle users will be a crucial part of that strategy.

HP fills in pricing and availability details for its sprawling Windows 8 line-up

HP announces pricing and dates for its entire Windows 8 lineup

HP has just announced pricing and availability for its burgeoning Windows 8 lineup of hybrid PCs, notebooks, all-in-ones, desktops and business PCs. The company seem to be wooing every niche out there with a huge (and confusing) array of products running the newfangled OS, and though we already knew the score on many, the picture is now (almost!) complete. The 11.6-inch Envy x2 hybrid (shown above), powered with an Intel Clover-Trail flavored Atom processor will come on the scene on November 14th starting from $850, for instance, and we also have the scoop on the HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4, HP Phoenix h9 desktop PC and HP Pavilion dm1 (with new 4G connectivity) after the break. Finally, HP still hasn’t released pricing or details on its once-mysterious ElitePad 900 business tablet, but they did say that customers who nab one early next year will receive a 50GB Box cloud storage account, gratis. To see the company’s entire range, along with dates and prices, the PR is also after the fold.

Nikon announces 14.2MP 1 V2 interchangeable lens camera

Nikon has announced the latest camera in its Nikon 1 Advanced Camera series, the Nikon 1 V2. The unoriginal name aside, the 1 V2 is an interchangeable-lens digital camera designed to resemble a DSLR while providing the simplicity an amateur photographer requires. Also announced was the SB-N7, a compact speedlight for the Nikon 1 V1 and 1 V2.

The Nikon 1 V2 has a 14.2MP CMOS sensor, and is part of the company’s Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens System. It offers “astoundingly rapid autofocus,” and can record full HD video. This camera can snap images up to 15fps while utilizing the autofocus tracking feature. The 1 V2 has a 3-inch LCD display, and a 1.4 million dot viewfinder.

Although the 1 V2 isn’t a DSLR, it seems like Nikon tried to give it that type of feel, effectively targeting an audience that wants to seem advanced while keeping things simple. According to Bo Kajiwara, VP of Marketing, Planning, and Customer Experience, “The new V2 [demonstrates] Nikon’s dedication to delivering a camera system that meets the needs of creative and expressive consumers looking for an easy-to-use camera that is portable enough to take on any life adventure.” Nothing completes the DSLR-like feel than the interchangable lens feature. ISO ranges from 160 to 6400.

The 1 V2 offers Enhanced Motion Snapshot Mode, which is a short 4-second slow-motion recording taken at the same time as a photograph. In the same vein, the camera also includes Advance Movie Mode, which allows photographers to record full HD video and snap high-resolution images at the same time. The 1 V2 will be available in the end of November with an SRP of $899.95, while the speedlight will be available in January with an SRP of $159.95.

Best Buy listing reminds us that the LG Spectrum 2 is still on its way to Verizon

DNP Best Buy ad reminds us that Verizon's LG Spectrum 2 is still on its way

A few months back an anonymous tipster gave us a candid look at the Verizon-bound LG Spectrum 2, but after a couple more sightings here and there, the trail eventually went cold and Big Red’s unannounced smartphone fled back into seclusion. However, a recent website posting by Best Buy has brought this mobile Sasquatch out of hiding and back into the mainstream media. While this listing is mostly a refresh confirming our source’s shared specs, it notes the Spectrum 2’s unsubsidized price as $650. Now, before you would-be buyers start directing your browser to the retailer’s webpage in hopes of making a quick purchase, it should be noted that the device is listed as “sold out online.” Still, we can’t help but notice the pictured device’s homescreen carries a date of November 3rd, which could be a nod to when the Spectrum 2 might officially show up on store shelves.

Sony Xperia J has SMS counter function

Times are not exactly the best economically speaking, and if you know that your mobile plan has a limited number of text messages that you are able to send each month, keeping track of them is not exactly the easiest thing to do, especially when you have your attention pulled towards other directions from time to time. Well, how about letting your smartphone keep track for you, at least in part to make sure it earns the smartphone name?

The Sony Xperia J is said to feature an SMS counter that can be activated under the Menu settings, where you are able to set the ceiling on just how many text messages you are able to send monthly. Definitely an advantage for those who have subscribed to restrictive mobile contracts, and parents, too, will be able to keep a lid on their kid’s texting habits. No idea on whether the SMS counter feature will be made available only on the Sony Xperia J, or will it soon be expanded to other devices in the Sony Xperia range. Guess only time will tell!

Same “B—-,” new time slot. ABC is pairing “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23” with “Happy Endings” to create a Tuesday night comedy block. But the new night is the only change evident on “Apartment 23” — though June seems convinced sadness has cost her a full cup size. Chloe is as manipulative as ever, though oddly coming from a place of love at times.

That was evident this week when it was revealed that she’s been sending “Dawson’s Creek” reunion please to her bestie James Van Der Beek for years. The truth is, the cast hates him. When June convinces James to go along with the reunion, the truth comes out, and James is crushed. Guest star Busy Philipps explains that it has to do with the bill for a ton of boats when “Creek” wrapped.

But James is obsessed with it now, so he tries to find a way to horn himself into someone else’s reunion show. So he accosts Frankie Muniz in a shopping mall, suggesting that Dawson could show up at a “Malcolm in the Middle” reunion. Finally, Chloe has to pull in the big guns: Zack Morris.
