Marathon Runners Stop Aging Out Of The Race

Adrienne Lotson, who turned 50 this year, is running her first marathon race on Sunday, and no one is more surprised about it than she is.

Ten Storms The World Forgot About

Last night, the news from the New York metro area sounded apocalyptic: Water flooding the subways, cranes falling, a blakcout over lower Manhattan, and nuclear power plants forced to partially shut down. Today, as the flood waters recede and the rain begins to lighten, people are venturing outside and beginning to evaluate the damage. Hurricane Sandy was devastating by any measure, but beleaguered New Yorkers can take comfort: It could have been worse. Here’s a look at some of the world’s most devastating storms this year, often in places far less equipped to handle severe weather.

Apple removing delivery dates from iPad mini LTE pre-orders

Last week, we reported that customers who pre-ordered an LTE model of the iPad mini were getting confirmations of delivery dates with their order, some saying that they would get theirs as early as November 21 (one of our commenters even mentioned the 20th for him). However, it seems that Apple is redacting these dates and substituting in “mid-November” instead.

We’re not really sure why Apple is doing this, but many customers have reported that the delivery date for their iPad mini LTE units changed from a specific date to “mid-November.” Apple’s website has always read “mid-November,” so we were even surprised in the first place to see that people were receiving solid release dates.

One theory is that Apple is suddenly experiencing delays of some kind. Whether it’d be back-order delays, shipping delays, or what have you, that’s probably the culprit considering that all versions of the iPad mini are now sold out. Apple CEO Tim Cook even said himself that the company is “in a significant state of backlog.”

So, it’s very possible that those who were told a delivery date sometime between November 20 and November 23 could see a longer delay, possibly well into December, which is probably the worst time to buy anything considering the holiday rush. If you bought an LTE version of the iPad mini, let us know if your delivery date was changed.

Gross Ingredients Lurking In Your Halloween Candy

You might expect to find beetles and animal bones in a haunted house this Halloween. You probably don’t expect to find them in your Halloween candy.

But with a little detective work on the labels of some of your favorite treats, you might find those two “ingredients” and more less-than-pleasant additives and preservatives.

In the wake of this year’s pink slime outrage, consumers began to push back, demanding more transparency as to what is in their food and why.

Storm Sends Beavers Into Pentagon City Streets

Humans aren’t the only ones suffering the effects of Superstorm Sandy. The storm apparently forced some beavers out of their habitats and into the streets of Pentagon City. A few residents who live in a condo complex on S. Hayes Street were about to head out this morning when they were surprised by a wet, furry visitor. The residents called animal control upon encountering the beaver scurrying from door to door.

Future Of Tenure Debated At Wayne State University In Detroit And Countrywide

The future of tenure is up for debate as universities examine the effectiveness of old models and tighten budgets. Detroit’s Wayne State University has grappled with the issue recently as the faculty union negotiated with administration for a new contract.

This week, HuffPost Live tackled the issue with WSU professor and union president Charlie Parrish, Tenured Radicals author Roger Kimball, American University student Matt Farrell and host Marc Lamont Hill, who is a professor himself.

In July, WSU administration sought to make changes to the faculty evaluation process to improve flexibility and accountability, but opponents considered the changes an assault on tenure, which is designed to provide job security and academic freedom.

iTunes 11 Delayed: Apple Will Hold Off On New Music Software Until ‘End Of November’

Are you waiting with bated breath for iTunes 11? If so, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.

In September, Apple told the world that the newest version of its music-playing software was coming in late October. But on Tuesday, with only a single day left in the month, Apple announced that the upgrade would have to wait another month.

“The new iTunes is taking longer than expected and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right,” Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr told tech blog AllThingsD. “We look forward to releasing this new version of iTunes with its dramatically simpler and cleaner interface, and seamless integration with iCloud before the end of November.”
