Borderlands Legends confirmed, out for iOS on October 31

Yesterday, we heard a rumor that claimed Gearbox was getting ready to launch a new Borderlands mobile game. It didn’t take long for the studio to confirm it, as today it announced that this new game – dubbed Borderlands Legends – will be available for iOS devices on Halloween. As you might expect from a mobile game, Borderlands Legends marks a pretty radical departure from the Borderlands titles we know and love.

Gearbox shared most of the first details about the game with Entertainment Weekly, saying that it will be a top-down shooter instead of an FPS. Gamers familiar with the core Borderlands series will be recognize with the enemies in the game, but in a very interesting spin, players won’t just be controlling one of the characters at a time. Instead, they’ll control all of them at once, leading Brick, Lilith, Mordecai, and Roland in their struggle against wave after wave of baddies in randomized missions.

Like we heard yesterday, Borderlands Legends will feature a level up system that’s similar to the games in the main series, although don’t expect things to be quite so fleshed out. Each character will have a total of three action skills and then six abilities in their skill tree, so your choices have been pared back pretty significantly. Again though, this is a mobile game, so we can’t expect a true-to-form Borderlands experience.

Still, it sounds like Borderlands Legends should be a lot of fun for those who want to take Borderlands on the go with them. The game will be available on the iOS App Store on October 31, and it’ll cost you $5 on iPhone and $7 on iPad. Is anyone thinking of checking this one out?

New Algorithm More Accurately Predicts In-Vitro Success

In-vitro is a complicated, expensive procedure that isn’t usually covered by insurance. So it would make sense that before the procedure is started, all interested parties have a good idea about the chance of success. The problem is that age is the main metric used to determine the chances of in-vitro success, and it’s not all that great; it has a high rate of false negatives. That may be changing–startup California company Univfy is presenting a new algorithm to the AMerican Society of Reproductive Medicine tomorrow that is 36% more accurate than age alone at determining fertility.  (more…)

The iPad Mini Seems Crazy Expensive

There’s almost no question that the iPad Mini is a terrific device; it’s got too much pedigree and money behind it to be anything else. But barring some sort of miracle from on Ive, it’s also certifiably overpriced. And that’s a bad sign for Apple. More »

Bask In The Glow Of The Solar System With These Planet-Inspired Candles

Melding past with present, the Teluria Candelabra’s designers were inspired by a centuries old device that used the earth, moon, and sun’s rotations to predict the seasons. Note Design Studio created the piece for Klong with the hopes that their candelabra would visualize the “cause of night and day, solar and lunar eclipses, and the phases of the moon.” More »

Netflix Q3 2012 earnings: 2 million more streaming subscribers worldwide, $8 million net income

Netflix saw a return to profitability and more than half a million new US subscribers in the second quarter of this year, and it’s now announced that it’s added a full two million more streaming members worldwide for the third quarter. That brings the company’s global base of streaming subscribers to 29 million, 25.1 million of which are in the US. It’s also announced another bump in profits to $8 million in net income, with global revenue of $905 million. It’s unsurprisingly a different story when it comes to DVD subscriptions in the US, however, with the company reporting a drop from 9.24 million total subscribers in Q2 to 8.61 million in Q3.

In terms of usage, Netflix says that its streaming members have now consumed over three billion hours of content, and that TV shows now account for about two thirds of that viewing activity. The company has also reiterated its commitment to original programming in its letter to shareholders, although it notes that commitment comes with some front-loaded expenses that will result in negative free cash flow for the next “several quarters” beginning with Q4. The company further adds that it believes “investment in originals is wise, and we will evaluate the performance of the slate next year to determine at what level we should fund additional original.” You can find the full letter and all the numbers at the source link below.

Surface Touch Cover Detailed: An Ultra-Thin Touch Keyboard As Efficient As A Laptop’s

Screen Shot 2012-10-23 at 3.40.55 PM

With all the hullaballoo surrounding the new iPad Mini, it’s worth remembering that some actual Windows-flavored competition is ready to roll. We learned last week that Microsoft spent quite some time in a self-described Willy Wonka type studio, carefully crafting the clicky, compact Windows 8 tablet. And one of its most special, and most important, features is the Touch Cover, which doubles as a tablet cover and a keyboard all in one 3mm package.

Microsoft today released a video that goes into more detail about the Touch Cover’s creation. As you may remember from the original tour through Studio B, a lot of attention went into the noises of the tablet, namely the soft clicking sound when the touch cover attaches.

Microsoft also showed off the Type Cover, which is essentially a 6mm cover with a scissor key keyboard. It has all the same “smart” functionality as the Touch Cover, but with a bit more familiarity when typing.

However, an engineer in the video explains that, with the Touch Cover, “there isn’t a huge learning curve with respect to muscle memory of where your fingers are striking the keys.” We’ll have to wait until full reviews are released to find out.

Microsoft Surface RT is already available for pre-order and becomes available on October 26.

Blogger Asks People to Slap Him Silly Whenever He Logs on to Social Networks

How do you get over an addiction? Some people check into rehab, others go cold turkey, while others resort to hiring people off Craigslist to slap themselves out of it. The first two seem like typical things to do. The last one was done by blogger Sethi.

Blog Slap1

Sethi runs a blog called Hack the System. He also happens to be addicted to social media. One day, he tracked how he was spending his time and discovered that he was spending way too much time chatting on Facebook and checking out Reddit. So he did what no normal person would do and posted an ad on Craigslist for a slapper:

I’m looking for someone who can work next to me at a defined location (my house or a mission cafe) and will make sure to watch what is happening on my screen. When I am wasting time, you’ll have to yell at me or if need be, slap me.

Strange thing to do, I know. But people actually signed on to do the gig and Sethi got a fair amount of slaps in the process. What’s stranger is that it actually worked for Sethi, since he reported that his productivity was quadrupled because of it.

I guess you could say Sethi managed to slap away his habit.
