A New Leash on Life

Time to walk the dog. Run through your mental checklist. Coat? Check. Dog’s coat? Check. Gloves? Check. Leash? Check. Oh wait, it’s about to snap. Re tie it. Doggy bags? Check. Reflectors for walking at night? Check. Boy, this dog walking stuff gets more complicated all the time. Long gone are the days of just taking the dog out and letting them run.

I recommend making the walking process as efficient as possible. Quirky wants to help with their Kosoku leash which contains more features than I knew a dog leash could contain. Kosoku is good for dogs up to 45 lbs and offers a retractable 9 foot leash with a semi-rigid core. Around the core is neoprene and nylon canvas. Collectively the materials provide flexibility, strength, shock absorption and durability. The leash portion remains naturally comfortable in the hand via smart design and neoprene exterior. And most importantly the leash contains a pocket for the doggy bags! No more walking out of the house without them.

On Quirky’s site you will see that the Kosoku is still in development. But they also feature a video on the development process. Once done you can pick up a Kosoku for $29.99 which seems an easy investment if it helps cut down on some of the hassles of walking the pooch.

Marvel’s Superheroes Were Babies, Once Upon a Time

Superheroes were once babies, too. And it’s about time Marvel showed the whole world what they were probably like, via Skottie Young’s awesomely-rendered covers for the Marvel NOW! titles.

This is Skottie’s second batch of covers and he does a pretty bang-up job as usual, as you can see below.

Marvel Superheroes BabiesMomma Captain America seems pretty uptight, doesn’t she? This batch of variant covers features Punisher, Deadpool, Medusa, the Thing, and more as tiny and uber-adorable tots – each of who will eventually grow into some of the best crime-fighting superheroes the world has ever seen.

Ben Gibbard, Death Cab For Cutie Singer, Supports Gay Marriage In Daily Beast Blog

Add Ben Gibbard to the ever-growing list of musicians and celebrities who are speaking out in favor of same-sex marriage.

The lead singer of Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service penned a poignant blog for The Daily Beast in which he shared anecdotes about growing up with his younger sister, who is a lesbian, while stressing his fundraising support for Referendum 74 (R-74), which would approve the February 2012 bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in his home state of Washington.

Gibbard, 36, noted that his parents required what he describes as “readjusting” when his sister announced plans to tie the knot with her female partner in 2009. He recalled:

Dear Republicans, Remember When You Said This About Mitt Romney? (VIDEO)

Politics is an ugly business, where personal allegiances are often tenuous at best. This detail has been on full display throughout the six-year presidential campaign of Republican Mitt Romney, a stretch that has given top figures from the former Massachusetts governor’s own party plenty of time to explain why they think he’s not a good choice for president. YouTube user tlbuck20 released a video mashup earlier this month compiling some of their most enthusiastic attacks, including from a number of Republicans now campaigning for Romney. Some of this criticism might sound familiar from the presidential campaign in the past months, but you’re certainly not hearing it from these people anymore.

Baby Ripley Power Loader Costume Takes Down the Alien Queen (and All Other Costumes)

Well, Halloween is upon us yet again, and my favorite costume of the year has just dropped onto my desktop. What you’re looking at here is an awesome build of the power loader from Aliens, piloted not by Ripley, but by an actual baby.

baby aliens power loader

Yes. It’s just that great. The costume was posted by Redditor rdt156, and apparently his friend Jason Smith built it to seat not just his daughter, but he’s hiding in there somewhere himself.

Now all he needs to do is have his wife dress up as the Alien Queen, and the costume would be truly complete.

Netflix makes unfortunate typo error in SEC filing

No one’s perfect, obviously, and we all make mistakes at some point no matter how dumb or illogical they seem. Netflix just made one themselves on a recent SEC filing, and it was caught this morning. However, it wasn’t just a simple misspelling or a missing comma. The typo was fairly significant and completely shocked investors.

All SEC filings are crucial for investors, but this particular filing was especially important, because investors wanted to know how Netflix’s finances were doing as the company began to expand to other countries — specifically if Netflix was spending more than it could afford on the expansion. Netflix reported last week that its new services in Latin America, the UK, and Ireland “have contributed to a 14% increase in [Netflix’s] content expenses in the International segment.” However, the increase was actually 348%.

Netflix claimed it as “a typographical error” and changed “14%” to “348%,” which actually showed up twice in the report at 14%. Obviously, a 348% increase is an insane jump from 14%, and worst of all, investors were specifically focused on that figure, so seeing a change to 348% probably wasn’t what they wanted to see.

This certainly adds insult to injury for Netflix, who expected to add seven million streaming subscribers in the US during 2012 at first, but recently lowered that number down to five million last week. It’s not said what investors might do, but Vasily Karasyov from Susquehanna Financial Group said that “it’s fair for investors to wonder” whether or not Netflix has gone too deep in growing its international market.

HTC One X+ review: it’s the One X, and then some (video)

HTC One X review (UK version)

A spec bump in the middle of a product cycle? All the cool cats do it these days, even if they risk alienating customers who just bought what they thought was this year’s flagship device. HTC has actually played this game for a while, first with the Sensation XE, which acted as a mid-term replacement for the original Sensation and now, with the One X+ which treads all over the One X‘s toes. However, with this latest handset, the manufacturer has some justification: the One X+ comes with 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, whereas the global One X maxed out at 32GB and the AT&T version was only 16GB. Since there’s no microSD expansion on these phones, it’s possible to argue that the One X+ is a sensible addition, which caters specifically to storage-hungry power users and audiophiles. (Note: We’ll be reviewing the HSPA+ UK version of this handset here, and comparing it mainly to the HSPA+ One X. We’ll test the US-destined LTE variant very soon.)

There are other improvements aside from the bigger storage option, of course. The NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor has had a speed bump to 1.7GHz — perhaps in an effort to challenge the Galaxy S III’s benchmarking might. There’s a larger 2,100mAh battery to stay in step with that more power-hungry silicon; the front camera module has been replaced with a higher-res chip and better image processing; and, there’s also some new audio circuitry to improve the speaker’s sound quality. The One X+ also runs HTC’s updated Sense 4+ skin, based on Jelly Bean, which will eventually arrive on older One-series phones as well. As for the rest of the spec sheet, all the good and not-so-good stuff from the One X has carried over — the stunning 4.7-inch, 1,280 x 720 Super LCD2 display is still here, thank goodness, and so is the 8-megapixel f/2.0 rear camera. However, there’s still only 1GB of RAM (LG and Samsung flagships boast double that). So, what’s needed here is an upshot: if you haven’t made the leap to a 2012 superphone just yet, how does the One X+ carry itself relative to its cheaper predecessor and the latest competition? Read on and we’ll endeavor to find out.

Kickstarter launches in the U.K.

Kickstarter, the popular crowd-funding website for innovative and creative projects, is branching out in the U.K. In an interview with BBC, Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler said that one of the most requested features it has received so far is to expand internationally. Strickler then broke the news that the company has plans of expanding its business to other countries. “We certainly are interested. We’re going to see how the UK launch goes and figure out the next moves from there. There’s a lot of places that will be interesting,” he added.

Since it launched in 2009, Kickstarter has reportedly raised more than $340 million and more than 70,000 projects. One of the most successful projects to debut on the site is Ouya, a new video gaming console, which raised $8,596,474. While there are also other similar crowd-funding websites in the U.K., none of them can really par Kickstarter’s record. U.K. is now working on ways to support a range of new ways of lending, and the growth of innovative financing models such as crowd-funding
