New MacBook line up priced

We’re still waiting on today’s huge announcement coming from Apple’s press event, but before we get there, we’ve got some pretty excellent news to report. Yes, there will be a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, along with a bunch of new models in the MacBook line in general. Apple’s Phil Schiller delivered prices on this new line up during the event today, and it seems like there should be something for all budgets (or at least most of them).

We’ll start with the all new MacBook Airs. 11-inchers come in at a pretty decent price, setting you back only $999, while the new 13-inch MacBook Airs will run $1,199. Though Apple revealed new MacBook Pros with Retina Display, the old Pros are sticking around, and as such have new prices. 13-inch MacBook Pros will cost $1,199, while the 15-inch models will come in at $1,799.

Finally, we come to the Retina MacBook Pros, specifically the the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Taking one of those home will cost you $1,699, while if you want the 15-inch model, you’ll have to plop down $2,199. Not too bad, but we have a feeling that some will find those prices a little difficult to swallow. Still, $1,699 was considered by many to be the sweet spot for 13-inch MacBook Pros with Retina Display, and it seems that Apple has hit it. Stay tuned for more information straight from Apple’s event, and be sure to check out our Apple hub to get all of the news from today!

Apple introduces ‘Fusion Drive’ as a build-to-order option for the new iMac

Image

So you want the performance of a new-fangled SSD with the extra storage of a good ‘ole HDD? Apple has you covered with Fusion Drive for its new iMac. Unlike existing standalone hybrid drives the company is apparently “fusing” together a separate SSD and HDD with custom software in Mountain Lion. Better yet, the OS and all the pre-installed applications live on the SSD by default, while your documents and media reside on the HDD. This sounds similar to the software RAID functionality in OS X, but cranked to the next level. Stay tuned for details as we find out more.

Apple iPad sales topped 100 million two weeks ago

Just two and a half years after creating the product line, Apple announced today it has already notched its 100 millionth iPad sold. While we’re still expecting to see a new, smaller model (get all the 4th gen info, including the new mini right here) unveiled today Apple is leading off its tablet talk with some chest thumping. According to its stats, it sold more iPads in the June quarter than any one PC manufacturers sold of their entire lineup, a hefty feat even if you take into account customers waiting for Windows 8. It’s also referencing data that says the iPad accounts for 91 percent of web traffic among tablets. If that’s not enough, there’s also love for the education sector with a new version of iBooks author, which should get plenty of use with 2,500 schools in the US using them, and 80 percent of the curriculum available in iBooks.

iMac refreshed with 8th generation ultra-thin body

The next generation of iMac has been revealed at the Apple event today that should very well be show the iPad mini – and it’s “absolutely beautiful” as Apple says, not least of all because its’s extremely thin – 55mm thin, in fact. This update has edge-to-edge glass, an extremely thin body, and a set of ports on the back that keep this device in the all-in-one family for real. The basic design of the device is similar to the previous generations of the iMac, here with a new Chin with Friction Stir welding.

The molecules of the aluminum merge together, Apple says, with Friction Stir welding, a new technique that makes this machine seamless. A newly engineered body contains a brand new set of technologies that take what the iMac 7th generation accomplished and pushes it to a whole new level. There will be at least two models available from Apple, those being the following:

21.5 inch 1920 x 1080 display
25 inch 2560 x 1440 display

These units will be working with a lovely IPS display with a 178 degree viewing angle and 300+ nits brightness. These units have a full lamination design, a brand new bit of technology called Plasma deposition – of course this is a whole lot of testing that leads to 75% less reflection on the display than before. Each of these units has been individually calibrated by Apple by hand as well.

The back of these devices have a headphone port, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt ports, and an Ethernet port – check the Apple portal for full pricing on this device as well as the rest throughout the day!

What Is Apple Fusion Drive?

While introducing the new ridiculously thin iMac, Apple also revealed its new Fusion Drive. What is it? It’s a new storage system that supposedly combines the best of SSD and HDD. Basically, the speed of a SSD with the storage space of a big spinning HDD. More »

13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display detailed in full

Apple just unveiled a 13-inch MacBook Pro with the company’s infamous Retina display. The 13-incher boasts a whopping 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, which is a 4x boost over the regular 13-inch MacBook Pro. Apple’s Phil Schiller says the new 13-inch model weighs in at 3.5 pounds and is only 0.75-inches think. That makes it 20% lighter and almost a full pound lighter than the regular 13-inch model.

The new model features some of the same features that you’ll find on the 15-inch Retina-equipped MacBook Pro, like the MagSafe 2 power connector, Thunderbolt ports (two of them on the 13-incher), HDMI output, and two USB 3.0 ports. There’s also no optical drive in this one, so if you’re still relying on CDs and DVDs to work your magic, you’ll be sadly disappointed.

Apple claims that the Retina display on its new 13-inch MacBook Pro is the second-highest resolution of any laptop display in the world — the first being the company’s 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro that they unveiled earlier this year. It offers nearly two times the resolution of a 1080p display. Plus, Apple says the screen has a 29% higher contrast ratio over the regular model and 75% reduced glare.

Obviously, the new model still has the FaceTime front-facing webcam that shoots 720p HD video, as well as a backlit keyboard, a stereo mic, and stereo speakers that are placed on the sides of the laptop instead of the back like previous models. As far as performance specs, we’re looking at up to 768GB of SSD storage, 8GB of RAM, an Intel Core i5 or i7 Ivy Bridge chips, HD 4000 graphics, and 802.11n WiFi with Bluetooth 4.0.

Battery life is expected to be around 7 hours, and the base model will cost you $1,699, which comes with a 2.5GHz Core i5, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. Bump it up to 256GB for $300 more. The laptop will ship today and is available for ordering.

Apple Unveils Totally Redesigned 27″ And 21.5″ iMac: Thinner, SSD/HD Fusion Drive, Starting At $1299

iMac

Today at Apple’s press event, Apple unveiled updated iMacs much thinner than previous versions. It uses friction stir welding for aluminum. The display is now laminated directly to the glass. The optical drive is gone. The 27-inch display resolution is 2560×1440, and 1920×1080 for the 21.5-inch. Internal components were updated as well, with the introduction of the Fusion Drive.

“The molecules of the aluminum are merged together to make one piece,” Phil Schiller said. But the biggest new feature is the Fusion Drive. A traditional hard drive and a SSD are fused together to form a single volume. Everything is faster thanks to to the SSD.

As an example, Aperture photo transfers are now much quicker.

There is 75 percent less reflection thanks to the laminated display. Displays are individually calibrated to appeal to photo enthusiasts. As in laptops, the iMac now has dual microphone and stereo speakers.

Four USB 3.0 ports and a Thunderbolt port come with the traditional other ports. The default 21.5-inch configuration comes with a 2.7 GHz quad-core i5, 8 GB of RAM, a GeForce GT 640M and a 1 TB hard drive for $1299. The 27-inch model comes with a 2.9 GHz quad-core i5, a GeForce GTX 660M and the same 8 GB of RAM and 1 TB hard drive for $1799.

Order today and it will ship in December.

Here is iMac’s history:

New iMac is razor thin, impressive!

If there is one thing that you cannot take away from Apple, it would be the company’s knack for industrial design in their products, and the latest generation in the iMac line is testament to that. Touted to be the “most beautiful Mac” that they’ve ever made, you get edge-to-edge glass goodness from the moment you lay your eyes on it. An optical drive does seem missing from the setup, but that’s more or less to be expected considering just how slim the entire shebang is – we’re talking about just 5mm thin at the edges.

Mac mini refresh starts from $599

There is this prevalent school of thought that goes along the line of Apple products being expensive, and for most part, it was very true in the past, although the advent of high powered notebooks and Ultrabooks that run on the Windows platform have more or less caught up in some cases where pricing details are concerned. Well, the Mac mini is said to be the most affordable Mac to date, where it will cost you $599 per entry for its base model that carries a 2.5GHz processor, a 500GB hard drive and 4GB RAM.
