iBooks app updated with Continuous Scrolling

With the update of the Apple universe comes the push for apps that keep the Apple ecosystem strong, thus the event today came running with 1.5 million books on the iBooks book store. This update from Tim Cook came in with 400 million downloads from the iBooks book store. These numbers came with a brand new update for iBooks that starts in with Continuous Scrolling, iCloud, and new sharing abilities.

Facebook and Twitter have been integrated into iBooks here with this newest version of iBooks, as are several new languages. Korean, Chinese, and Japanese have been added to the iBooks family of books, all of them working in a free download available in the App Store right this minute. This is a pre-cursor to the iPad mini, we must expect, as its perfect book-sized shape will lend itself to the new version.

If you’re ready to take on the new version of iBooks, you can head to the iTunes app store right this minute and download away. The full update includes a new wave of books added in several countries – noted earlier this week – and we’re expecting the line to expand through the week. Stay tuned to this big Apple event throughout the day for more updates to the whole Apple family!

13-Inch MacBook Pro Gets a Retina Display

Great news for anyone who’s lusted after the gorgeous retina display on the MacBook Pro—but has been hesitant to drop $2,200 or make room for a 15-inch laptop. Apple has officially announced a 13-inch version of its portable workstation, with a 2560 x 1600 Retina Display. That’s just a slight drop in resolution from the 15-incher. More »

iOS 6 now on 200 million iOS devices

We’re here at Apple‘s iPad mini event and CEO Tim Cook is announcing some impressive stats on the company’s products. Cook just announced that 200 million iOS devices have already upgraded to iOS 6. The new update was released just over a month ago, and already it’s at phenomenal numbers — 60% of iOS users have updated to iOS 6

Cook says that this was the fastest update rate of any software history that the company knows of. Cook also talked about the seamless integration between iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion, specifically calling out Documents in the Cloud, saying that there are over 125 million Documents in the Cloud right now.

iMessage has also seen a huge boost in usage. 300 billion (with a “B”) iMessages have been sent since the platform was first launched, and it’s at a rate of about 28,000 messages being sent every second. Other statistics that Cook quickly mentioned were about Game Center — 160 million Game Center accounts have been created. Also, iOS 6′s shared Photo Stream feature also has seen over 70 million photos shared between iOS users.

Apple unveils new version of iBooks with continuous scrolling, iBooks Author also updated

Apple CEO Tim Cook took to a San Jose theater stage today to unveil a new version of the company’s literature-based digital storefront, iBooks. Cook says it integrates better with iCloud, allows for quote sharing on Facebook and Twitter, and has support for “over 40 languages.” Beyond the app update info, Cook touted iBook’s sales exceeding 400 million books worldwide — not too shabby! The updated iBooks app should be available today on the iOS App Store, though it’s not there just yet.

Update: It looks like iBooks Author is also getting an update today, as Cook says new templates, fonts, and user-created fonts are now supported. Additionally, mathematical equations can now be inserted directly, and multitouch widgets will also work.

Apple announces iPhone 5 as fastest selling phone in history

Apple‘s event has just kicked off this morning where we’re expecting tons of exciting news. From the iPad mini, an improved iMac mini, and tons more. While they’ve just got started and we’re patiently awaiting the good news, they are taking time to share some notes on the iPhone 5. Stating it was the fastest selling phone in history.

While these numbers aren’t unknown, and we’ve heard plenty already regarding numbers, it’s nice to hear it right from Apple’s own Tim Cook. Confirming that they sold over 5 million iPhone 5′s just on the opening weekend. Selling out faster than any iPhone to date, and being the fastest selling phone in history.

We’ve been watching the numbers, and reported on these numbers back in September, and you can read more about their 23 iPhone 5 sales a second. Pretty impressive numbers right?

The folks from Apple followed that up with a neat video showing some of the massive excitement, crowds, and families that lined up around the world to get the latest and greatest from Cupertino. Below are a few photos from Apple’s video showing the excitement of launch day. In case you somehow missed it, check out our iPhone 5 Review. Stay tuned right here for all the news coming soon about the iPad mini and more.

Apple sells 3m iPod touch 5G and iPod nano 7G

Apple has sold three million of its new iPod touch 5th gen and iPod nano 7th gen media players since they went on sale, the company has confirmed. Announced alongside the iPhone 5 back in September, the two new iPods are best-sellers, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed.

The figures are particularly impressive given many have suggested that standalone media players are a dying breed. Smartphones – capable of just as much media playback, and more – are increasingly taking on the role that once standalone PMPs might have filled.

That’s not to say that either the iPod touch or the iPod nano are limited to just music. Both play video, and the iPod nano has integrated Nike+ sports functionality. The iPod touch runs iOS 6, just like the iPhone 5, which means it has access to the App Store.

We’re covering all of Apple’s iPad mini event in San Jose today, and you can find all the details at our Apple Hub.

Best Buy Insignia Flex tablet product page is now up

It was just last week when we talked up a new tablet from the folks over at Best Buy, where it was dubbed as the Insignia Flex. This particular tablet has its very own product page now, carrying along with it a 9.7″ capacitive touch-panel display at 1024 x 768 resolution that will place it in the same league as the Apple iPad – in terms of screen size, at least. Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich is the operating system of choice, while a 1GHz TI OMAP 4428 processor should be decent enough to get it going for most tasks.

Other hardware specifications include 8GB of internal memory, a 2-cell lithium-polymer battery, built-in 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN, a 2-megapixel shooter up front, and a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes. Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity is thrown into the mix as well for wireless connectivity to accessories such as a portable keyboard. The entire Insignia Flex tips the scales at 1.5lbs and measures 0.5” thin, and will cost you $249.99. Interested in this mid-range tablet?
