Samsung Flexible AMOLED display mass production delayed on purpose?

We did sniff out word that Samsung could very well begin mass production of their flexible AMOLED displays from as early as November onward, but it does seem as though this is not the case according to the latest word from the ground. ETNews has reported that Samsung will indeed be pushing back the mass production date of the flexible displays, as they pretty much have their hands full at the moment, and will need to accommodate the demand of regular AMOLED displays.

At time of publishing, Samsung Display is able to produce up to 56,000 glass substrates each month, and they have every intention of increasing that figure up to 64,000 substrates each month. Well, I guess this can only mean that our dreams of having a smartphone with a curved display will just have to take the back seat at the moment. What, in your opinion, do you think is the best way make full use of a flexible AMOLED display?

Galaxy Note II to be $300 with T-Mobile contract, according to leak

Earlier today, a screenshot appeared showing the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note II smartphone at T-Mobile for $300 with a Value Plans contract. A short while later, another picture surfaced over at Phandroid seemingly confirming the carrier’s plan to launch the smartphone tomorrow. The document reads: “Additional information will be made available closer to the launch date, which is October 24th.”

According to the T-Mobile snapshot, the Galaxy Note 2 will be available to Classic Plan customers for $419.99 with a $50 rebate. Of course, the prices could change once the phone is actually launched. The Note 2 will be available from five major carriers: Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular.

The Galaxy Note 2 is a much-anticipated phablet smartphone featuring a huge 5.5-inch display and a weight of about 182g. The display, the smartphone’s most alluring feature, is an HD Super AMOLED panel with a 1280 x 720 resolution. The Note 2′s display is noticeably improved over the original Galaxy Note.

As far as the rest of the phone goes, this smartphone runs a 1.6GHz Exynos processor with 2GB of RAM. It comes in three varieties: 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, and has a microSD slot for further expansion. The battery is a sizable 3100mAh, so it lasts long despite its large screen. Check out our review of the Galaxy Note 2 for full details.

Kindle Fire HD software update delivers parental controls for FreeTime

Parents, you know that with great power comes great responsibility, and having a kid means you have an awesome responsibility ahead of you, including helping your little one make intelligent choices down the road. You can guide the little one early on in life with the right tools, and just in case they love fooling around with your Kindle Fire HD, bear in mind that there is a new update you should apply that delivers parental controls for the FreeTime feature, ensuring you have more say in how the 7” tablet is used by your kids.

Basically, Free Time allows parents to limit the amount of time that one is able to view different content types as well as apps, books, and other content that kids are allowed to see. To exit FreeTime mode, a password is required. This particular update will not bring good news for parents who have already rooted their respective Kindle Fire HD tablet, so you might not want to apply it until you are very sure your can re-root the Kindle Fire HD with the new update.

Nokia Lumia 510 launched

Nokia knows that not everyone is able to afford a high end smartphone, which is why when they walked with Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, there is a market segment that is crying out for an affordable model. I guess that clarion call has been met with the launch of the Nokia Lumia 510, an entry-level smartphone which does not burn a hole in your pocket, and yet looking stylish like all get out, coming in five different colors – red, yellow, cyan, white and black.

The hardware specifications one can look forward to would be a 4″ TFT display at 800 x 480 resolution, 256MB RAM with 4GB of internal memory, a 5-megapixel shooter camera at the back that does VGA videos at 30fps, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi and WCDMA connectivity. A Snapdragon S1 runs proceedings from underneath the hood, and you will still be able to enjoy Windows Phone’s signature Live Tiles, letting you check out at-a-glance updates as well as enjoy speedy access to all that you want to work with. Having said that, bear in mind that this is a Windows Phone 7.5 device, so you know for sure it will not be a handset to use if you want to remain at the cutting edge.

Microsoft Office Mobile apps have also been thrown into the mix, while the Internet Explorer 9 web browser helps you use the Nokia Lumia 510 right out of the box as it arrives in India, China, South America and Asia for $199 thereabouts from next month onward.

CHARLI-2 robot does Gangnam Style dance

One cannot seem to run or hide away from the Gangnam Style dance fever, where the human overseers of the CHARLI-2 robot has decided to program it to dance to the tune of South Korean rapper Psy’s viral hit song. Granted, a robot does not really fare that well when it comes to performing a pseudo horse dance, and there are not hot booties to look forward to, but at least you know that robots will no longer live a dreary life in the future should we end up integrating them into society as in Star Wars.

The Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory at Virginia Tech have certainly done their bit to ensure that despite it being a Monday, you can always kick start the week on a light and right note, and there is nothing quite like the infectious beat of Gangnam Style music to get you bopping without a care in the world. Heck, it is even capable of performing the lasso-style move, and we do wonder whether future robots that respond to music will have a Gangnam Style Easter Egg incorporated.

One moment 01M biodegradable shoes

If there is one fashion affront that should never have been established, it would be the Crocs shoes, although you could also somewhat classify Lady Gaga under that particular category. Well, here is the One moment 01M biodegradable shoes where the namesake itself gives the game away, making it ideal for those who love all things that have to do with gardening. After all, these biodegradable shoes can be transformed into compost once you’re done with them, using it to fertilize the garden in the process. These are 100% biodegradable, and were specially created via an injection-mold process that is made from soft vegetable-based plastic.

The shoes feel as though they are made from rubber though, and come with an anti-slip sole which makes it able to hold its own even against rain and dirt. Even then, the eco-friendly material that it is made out of will encourage you to compost it instead of just tossing them away once you’re done. Definitely not something that you would buy many times over in your lifetime since shoes wear out what, once a year if you drive them hard throughout the day? You can shred the 01M shoes, or just chuck them into a compost bin where it will take approximately half a year before it is broken down completely. Would you be willing to fork out 10 Euros for a pair of these puppies?

LG launches robot vacuum Hom Bot Square

Few things are better than having robots perform your chores for you. While wireless robot vacuums have been on the market for years, the earliest models were clunky and not terribly good at their jobs. That has changed as technology has improved, however, and now LG has announced its latest offering: the Hom-Bot Square.

The Hom-Bot square is a small robot vacuum that was previously referred to as the Hom-Bot 3.0 This updated Hom-Bot vacuum features a new square shape (hence its name), as well as longer side brushes and a larger body. According to the announcement, it is 72% more efficient at cleaning corners than the previous model. Check out their “Dirty Nightmare” video for a strange glimpse into its square-shaped goodness.

The top camera performs ceiling localization and mapping, while the sensor creates a map of the room it’s in and keeps the device’s placement within it. The top camera has a sensor that can adjust to darker settings called Illumination Invariant based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, II-SLAM for short. The device uses ultra-sonic distance sensors, and has a learning function that allows it to adjust to the room it’s in.

Like the versions before it, the Hom-Bot Square features Spiral, Zig Zag, and Cell by Cell models; it also features the new My Space mode, which lets it clean a specific area one time, after which point its memory will reset. The device is now on sale in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. It is also known as the Carpet Master in Germany.

ARM posts healthy Q3 profits up 22 percent thanks to smart TVs and other new markets

British chip designer ARM has just revealed its accounts for Q3 2012 and they show a familiar pattern: namely, a double-digit rise in both revenue (up 20 percent to £144.6 million, or around $230 million) and pre-tax earnings (up 22 percent to £68.1 million). According to Reuters, the company is attributing its latest bout of success to making “further inroads” into growing markets like smart TVs and microcontrollers. Of course, all of this is stands in stark contrast to the traditional x86 PC world, where giants like Intel and AMD have been struggling with weak demand.

Nokia launches budget Lumia 510: Windows Phone 7.5, 4-inch display and 5-megapixel camera (video)

Nokia launches budget Lumia 510 Windows Phone 75, 4inch display and 5megapixel camera

Confirming all those rumors we’ve been hearing, Nokia has officially taken the wraps off its latest budget smartphone, the Lumia 510 — slotting it somewhere between the Asha range and the Lumia 610. With the notable exception of the 4-inch (480 x 800) screen, which is a tad larger than its slightly more accomplished Windows Phone sibling, the other specs are very much in line with its low-cost stance: there’s a single 5-megapixel shooter at the back (no front-facer), a lowly 800MHz Qualcomm processor, 256MB RAM and 4GB of non-expandable storage. We’ll be bringing you further details as the story unfolds. In terms of the OS, it’ll ship with WP Mango but we’re told it will be upgraded to Windows Phone 7.8 at some point in the future.
