Can you smell what Google Wallet is cookin’?

Google Wallet has certainly matured in the recent months, where you can say that a slew of new users have jumped aboard the Google Wallet bandwagon, mostly courtesy of the Nexus 7 tablet’s release. Word on the street has it that Google is preparing to introduce even more big changes this time around by teasing users with a spanking new version of Google Wallet. It does seem as though the main Wallet page did advertise the looming of a new version, where it will also provide a link to a signup page for you to throw in a request for an invitation to the new Wallet if you are interested.

It does seem as though Google Wallet will soon be able to support the iPhone as well as other non-Android powered hardware, begging the question whether the new Google Wallet will shift its focus elsewhere instead of NFC. Perhaps QR codes and cameras might be candidates in the running? All in all, we will just have to sit back and wait to see just what will come out of it.

Samsung denies claim that it is severing ties with Apple

Earlier today, the Korea Times reported that, according to senior industry official, Samsung planned to sever its contract with Apple and cease providing LCD panels. Samsung has fired back, telling CNET that the claim is false, and that the company will continue to provide panels for its long-time partner and frequent rival, Apple. This kerfuffle comes in the midst of the two companies’ ongoing patent wars.

According to the original report, the industry insider had stated, “We are unable to supply our flat-screens to Apple with huge price discounts. Samsung has already cut our portion of shipments to Apple and next year we will stop shipping displays.” The summation of it was that Samsung seemingly wasn’t making enough money from continuing to provide for Apple, prompting the company to sever ties. Samsung has requested that the Korea Times edit the report.

Apple and Samsung have been engaged in a prolonged, often merciless series of back and forth lawsuits regarding patents, with victories and losses and countless appeals on both sides. After weeks of this, it was reported that Apple was reducing its reliance on Samsung for components due to risk management. Soon, Apple seemingly dropped pretenses and withdrew from Samsung as much as contractually possible.

Apple hasn’t commented on the issue, and presently the Korea Times article has not been changed to reflect Samsung’s statement. Samsung is the largest maker of smartphones in the world, and Apple has had a long relationship with the company. Currently, the two companies are still actively engaged in lawsuits.

New Office Web Apps get finalized for SkyDrive, Outlook

New Office Web Apps go live on SkyDrive, Outlook

As polished and functional as something might be in its preview days, a piece of work isn’t done until it is done, and Microsoft’s Office Web Apps have finally reached that point. Back in July, Redmond piped out preview versions of OWA and Office 365, focusing on adding tablet-friendly touch controls. Feedback from over 750,000 users and Windows 8’s impending deadline helped shaped today’s release, readying it for Microsoft’s latest operating system, IE10 and iOS 6. A pair of posts on the Office Web Apps Blog detail the new face of Office, including an improved authoring experience, better support for multi-user collaboration, faster performance and more. Read it for yourself at the source link below, or just log into Skydrive and get to work.

BIQ house powered by algae

Everyone wants to go green these days, it is not only the in thing, but doing so makes plenty of sense as well. After all, we do want to leave an earth that is worth inhabiting on for the next generation, right? Here is one prime example where other buildings can follow – the BIQ house in Germany that was specially designed for the International Building Exhibition in Hamburg. What does the BIQ house have that other houses don’t? For starters, it comes with a ‘bio-adaptive façade’ that relies on microalgae in order to generate renewable energy while providing shade. This zero-energy house is being constructed at the moment, and when completed, will be the epitome of a real-life test for the new façade system.

Algae in the bio-reactor façades are able to grow and multiply faster than ever in bright sunlight so that more shade can be provided. The bio-reactors will be able to provide juice to the building by capturing solar thermal heat while producing biomass which can be harvested later on. Designed by Splitterwerk Architects, in collaboration with Colt International, Arup, and SSC, we do hope to see the completion of this building happen on time by next March.

AMD unveils 4GHz+ FX Series Vishera processors

AMD has revealed the latest in its FX Series of processors: the Piledriver Vishera chips. Aimed at computer users with demanding hardware needs, the new series comes in 4, 6, and 8-core variants with a “default” speed of 4GHz. The chips feature a variety of enhancements and improvements over previous offerings.

The new line is composed of four processors: the 4.2GHz FX-8350 (8-core, $195), the 4.0GHz FX-8320 (8-core, $169), the 4.1GHz FX-6300 (6-core, $132), and the 4.0GHz FX-4300 (4-core, $122). The FX-4300 has 4MB of L3 cache, while the FX-6300 has 1MB of L2 cache per core with a total of 8MB of L3 cache. The two higher-end processors, the FX-8320 and FX-8350, both have 8MB of L3 cache. This series uses the Piledriver architecture, which is an improved version of the previously released Bulldozer.

The Piledriver cores were first introduced back in May in the A Series Trinity chips. Improvements include improved scheduling, larger L1 TLB, larger load queue, page translation reload optimization, and more. Said Adam Kozak, “We’re seeing anywhere from seven, all the way up to 15% [in improvement improvement]. Half of that comes from [instructions per cycle] improvements, and the other half or so comes from frequency improvements.” According to AMD, you need a 9-series motherboard to run the FX Vishera chips.

During a pre-release presentation, these four AMD processors were compared to Intel’s Core i5-3570K, i5-3450, i5-2300, and i3-2120 processors. In each case, the AMD processor was priced lower and offered better specs, according to the presentation slide. All FX Series processors are unlocked and can be overclocked.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD update brings Kindle FreeTime to tablet-craving tykes

Kindle FreeTime on Kindle Fire HD

One of Amazon’s subtler but potentially valuable promises for the Kindle Fire HD was its Kindle FreeTime mode — a fenced-off world that would give kids a simple place to play and their parents the confidence to step away for a few precious minutes. It wasn’t part of the initial launch, but a new update to the 7-inch model is rolling FreeTime into Amazon’s latest tablet. The upgrade gives as much flexibility as Amazon promised, letting adults introduce filters as well as cap the time their children spend with different kinds of content. Most of the remaining updates pertain to general fixes; that said, we imagine that most parents won’t mind the narrow focus once they know Junior can’t watch Kill Bill.

Meet Memoto: The Discreet Camera That Records Your Life In 30-Second Intervals

Screen Shot 2012-10-22 at 6.54.59 PM

It’s inevitable, right?

With cameras becoming ever smaller and storage becoming ever cheaper, there will come a day when all of our life’s memories are digitally preserved.

Memoto, a Stockholm-based startup inspired by the Quantified Self movement, is taking a stab at this opportunity with a postage-sized camera that wearers will carry around with them constantly.

It snaps a photo every 30 seconds, keeping a visual trail of your everyday life. A companion online service will store everything, catalog it by time, date and place and even help you pick out the most visually interesting moments.

The company’s launching a campaign on Kickstarter to draw interest. They’re hoping to retail the camera for $279 next year in three colors of graphite grey, white and bright orange. Early backers will get the camera and a one-year web subscription for $199.

So questions: Isn’t that creepy?

Maybe, but actually the company behind Memoto thought about voyeuristic or awkward social situations carefully in designing the camera. For one, the camera doesn’t turn off unless you put it away in darkness. That’s so friends, family or bystanders know with certainty about whether they’re being recorded or not. That’s different from other wearable devices (potentially like Google Glass), where it might not be so clear if you’re being recorded or not.

Co-founder Martin Källström started Memoto after transitioning out of his last startup, Twingly, which monitors blogs, tweets and more to track what customers are saying about a company’s products.

He became passionate about the Quantified Self movement and the ideas of Gordon Bell, a Microsoft researcher well-known for his experiments in life-logging.

Kallstrom wanted a way to record unexpected moments in his life, like his children’s first steps. He pointed out that we don’t often remember to record moments or shoot videos as these memories are happening. At the same time, things that don’t seem important at the moment become profoundly meaningful as we look back. Memoto is about being able to retrieve these memories, even if we can’t completely appreciate them as they pass.

As for the camera itself, it takes 5 megapixel resolution images and logs GPS positions and timestamps. It also has a built-in rechargeable battery, which can last up to two days. You wear it with a small, stainless steel clip that attaches to your clothing.

New iPad display seen, carries upgraded FaceTime camera

BGR has gotten hold of some pretty exclusive images of what they claim is the new iPad, and what you see above would be its new display assembly. Some of the more noticeable changes as listed by BGR include a larger cutout for its front-facing camera compared to its predecessor, and that can only mean one of two things: it is an engineering mistake, or Apple wants to throw in a larger sensor, and the smart money would be on the second option. Apple will most probably be using the 1.2 megapixel FaceTime HD camera that can be found in the iPhone 5 and iPod touch.

Another possible change would be the fact that the display itself will be optically bonded, resulting in reduced glare and an improved image. No idea on whether this will make its way as Apple’s 3rd-generation iPad refresh as the jury is still out as to whether an announcement on that will be made tomorrow morning or not. What do you think of an iPad refresh, and seeing how Apple’s quarterly earnings will be reported soon, how will it impact Apple’s fiscal year for 2013?

Amazon Web Services outage reported, users say it happened earlier

If it happened once, it can happen again, just like how lightning strikes the same place many times over in a lifetime. Amazon Web Services has experienced yet another outage, taking down numerous websites with it along the way, and this bit of unflattering news comes five months after storms ensured Amazon-powered sites like Instagram, Pinterest and Netflix were thrust into “disabled” mode. Issues Amazon’s Northern Virginia data center certainly gave Amazon Web Services customers headaches earlier today, with the outage reported by Amazon to have begun at around 2:11pm Eastern Time, while affecting “a small number” of instances in Amazon Web Services’s US-EAST-1 Region.

According to AWS’ Service Help Dashboard, the Northern Virginia data center is experiencing “Degraded EBS performance in a single Availability Zone” that appeared to take down or severely degrade performance of sites including Reddit, Flipboard, Airbnb, and Github.

As of Monday night, Amazon mentioned that they have already restored normal performance to approximately 50% of the instances affected, but were not bold enough to provide an actual timeframe for a full service restoration. Such downtimes will certainly affect Internet businesses as well as general users, as many of us now store our stuff on the cloud. Were you one of those parties affected?
