Twitter’s Favorite Button Could Have Been a Thanks Button

If you’re a Twitterer, you’re probably very familiar with the Favorite button on tweets. It’s Twitter’s equivalent to the Facebook ‘Like’ and a way to show appreciation to a good tweet, a weird tweet, a tweeted link or any tweet without replying or retweeting. It’s fun and it works. It also could have been known as ‘Thanks’. More »

Googler loads Ubuntu on an ARM-based Samsung Chromebook, gives solace to the offline among us

Googler slips Ubuntu on an ARMbased Samsung Chromebook, gives solace to the offline among us

Samsung’s ARM-running Chromebook is barely out of the starting gate, and it’s already being tweaked to run without as much of an online dependency. By a Google employee, no less. Not content to rely solely on Chrome OS, Olof Johansson has loaded Ubuntu on the Chromebook by partitioning an SD card, mixing OS components and booting from USB. The technique unsurprisingly requires being more than a little comfortable with a Linux command line as well as playing fast and loose with the warranty. It also won’t be cheap or quick — commenters note that you’ll ideally have a partitioning-friendly SD card, and running a desktop OS from a slower kind of flash storage creates an inherent bottleneck. Anyone who likes the Chromebook’s $249 price, but isn’t as enraptured with the cloud as most of the team in Mountain View, might still want to try Johansson’s step-by-step process for themselves.

New iPad screen images surface featuring updated FaceTime camera

We’ve all heard about the much-anticipated iPad mini, which is expected to be announced tomorrow at Apple‘s big event. It seems the iPad 4 is also in the making, with a picture purported to be the device’s lightening dock connector appearing on BGR yesterday. Now, earlier today, another two images have surfaced of a new iPad screen featuring an optically-bonded display and upgraded FaceTime camera. Whether the images belong to an upcoming iPad 4 or the anticipated iPad 3 refresh is unknown, according to BGR.

The images are via Apple.pro, and the source claims they are components for the upcoming iPad 4. Visible in the images is a larger FaceTime camera hole, indicating that Apple is adding a larger camera sensor into the device. Also new is an optically-bonded display, which will improve image quality while reducing glare.

Presently, the iPad features a 0.3MP FaceTime camera, and the iPhone 5 and 5th generation iPod Touch both feature a 1.2MP FaceTime HD camera. It seems likely that Apple plans to put the same 1.2MP camera into the iPad 4. Little else is known about the rumored device, except that it would likely be launched in spring of next year.

Presently, Apple seems to be focusing on a miniature iPad, which is said to feature a 7.85-inch display, and to be launched in white or black as 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models. Apple is holding an event tomorrow morning at 10AM PST, which we’ll be liveblogging, and is anticipated to announce the upcoming 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina.

Purported leak has Galaxy Note II for T-Mobile costing $300 on contract

Purported leak has Galaxy Note II for TMobile costing $300 on contract

While we’re just a heartbeat away from Samsung’s American launch event for the Galaxy Note II, that hasn’t stopped the leaks and rumors from flowing around the release. What appears to be an internal T-Mobile page leaked to TmoNews has the 5.5-inch giant costing $300 on the carrier’s Value plan — on par with Sprint’s up-front price, if you’re not including the long-term device payments. Classic plan adopters would supposedly pay $420 before dutifully mailing in for a $50 rebate, and it would take a hefty $700 for an outright purchase. Nothing’s definite until T-Mobile gives the green light, and we haven’t seen the prices that every other carrier will offer, but the price if real could establish a common narrative where Samsung’s biggest phone this year includes an equally large price tag.

New Office Web Apps now available on SkyDrive

Microsoft has announced the release of the newest Office Web Apps, which are now available via SkyDrive. Until now, the Office 2013-ish apps have been in preview mode since July, with 750,000 testers giving it the run through. According to the announcement, the Office Web Apps were “fine-tuned” for Windows 8, IE10, and iOS 6.

The Office Web Apps include Word Web App, Excel Web App, PowerPoint Web App, and OneNote Web App. Documents render 30% faster than before, and Microsoft promises that Office Web Apps and standard Microsoft Office applications play well together and are fully compatible. Sadly, Office Web Apps includes mostly basic features, lacking a lot of the more advanced features you find in its desktop software counterpart.

The Word Web App includes new support for adding and viewing comments, and has new page layout and picture tools. PowerPoint Web Apps has gained video playback support, allowing users to view videos from tablets and smartphones, as well as new comment and co-authoring support. In OneNote, you’ll find the added ability to search either an entire page or just a section, as well as new ink viewing support. In Excel Web App, you can “now print right from your browser and rename or add sheets as you need.”

Office Web Apps were first launched in 2010, allowing users to utilize Office from their Web browsers. Updates include expanded support for touch-friendly editing, additional formatting controls, and “consistent co-authoring/collaboration support across web apps.” You can get the new Office Web Apps from Outlook.com and via SkyDrive.

Samsung Refutes Report and Says That It Will Still Sell LCD Panels to Apple

Earlier today, The Korea Times reported that Samsung would stop selling LCD panels to Apple. That report seems to be wrong. Samsung has come out to say that, “Samsung Display has never tried to cut the supply for LCD panels to Apple.” More »

Samsung Galaxy S III is the first MetroPCS handset to support Google Wallet

DNP Samsung Galaxy S III is MetroPCS' first handset to support Google Wallet

While the US wireless industry seems far away from finding a universal mobile payment system, T-Mobile’s new BFF MetroPCS appears to have made its choice. Taking to its official Facebook page, the carrier announced on Monday that the Samsung Galaxy S III is its first handset to support Google Wallet. In choosing Google’s mobile payment platform, MetroPCS joins two of its biggest competitors, Sprint and US Cellular. It should be noted that T-Mobile is deeply committed to Google’s wireless payment competitor Isis, which recently became ready for public consumption. Once the two carriers exchange nuptials next year, it’s possible that we could be looking at the wireless industry’s first mobile payment Brady Bunch. However, looking back at T-Mobile’s previous attempts at mobile matrimony, we won’t be holding our breath waiting for this union to become official.
