iBookstore lines its shelves with paid content in New Zealand, 17 Latin American countries

iDevice owners in New Zealand and 17 Latin American countries are no longer restricted to a diet composed of free content when it comes to their respective iBookstores. A quick search of the storefronts will reveal virtual shelves stocked with paid-content that haven’t yet found their way to the shops’ homepages. Reside in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru or Venezuela? Head on over to the appropriate store and books with price tags will be available for purchase. If this is any sign of what Apple has up its sleeve for tomorrow, we suspect that “a little more” will involve a bit of reading.

Sony’s possible flagship 5-inch 1080p Odin smartphone leaked

Earlier this month, the user profiles for a new Sony smartphone, codenamed Odin, were leaked, revealing three models running Android 4.1. Now the folks over at Concept Phones have what seems to be the first picture of the upcoming smartphone, as well as a handful of specs. The Xperia C650X ‘Odin’ is suspected to be Sony’s next flagship.

Following on the heels of HTC‘s recently announced J Butterfly phablet, the image shows what is claimed to be Sony’s upcoming 5-inch response. Reportedly, it has a 441ppi 1920×1080 full HD resolution, 2GB of RAM, an Adreno 320 GPU, and a Qualcomm 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor. As Concept Phones noted, the display seems to extend to the edges of the phone.

Over at Android Police, they pulled quite a bit of Photoshop history from the image’s EXIF data, causing speculation that this uncomfirmed image may be nothing more than a well-crafted fake. While the photo itself is showing off an Xperia-branded smartphone, take the claim that it’s the real deal with a grain of salt. So far, the only claim that it’s the C650X comes from tipster Jsus.

The information in the leaked user profiles revealed models C6502, C6503, and C6506. The model numbers could represent various carriers or different regions, although typically the numbers represent different regions. Whether this is the real thing or a quality fake stands to be seen, but don’t get your hopes up quite yet.

A Tour of Astrobotic Technology’s lunar rover lab at Carnegie Mellon (video)

A Tour of Astrobotic Technology's lunar rover lab at Carnegie Mellon (video)

Things are buzzing late Monday afternoon at Carnegie Mellon’s Planetary Robotics Lab Highbay. Outside, in front of the garage door-like entrance, a trio of men fills up a kiddie pool with a garden hose. Just to their left, an Enterprise rent-a-truck backs up and a handful of students raise two metal ramps up to its rear in order to drive a flashy rover up inside. I ask our guide, Jason Calaiaro, what the vehicle’s final destination is. “NASA,” he answers, simply. “We have a great relationship with NASA, and they help us test things.”

Calaiaro is the CIO of Astrobotic Technology, an offshoot of the school that was founded a few years back, thanks to Google’s Lunar X Prize announcement. And while none of the handful of vehicles the former student showcases were made specifically with the government space agency in mind, given the company’s history of contractual work, we could well see them receive the NASA stamp of approval in the future. Asked to take us through the project, Calaiaro tells us, quite confidently, that the trio of vehicles behind us are set to “land on the moon in 2015,” an ambitious goal set to occur exactly three weeks from last Friday.

Gumdrop unveils first case for the not-yet-announced iPad mini

Talk about getting a jump on the market. Gumdrop Cases, maker of all sorts of cases for various tablets and phones, has unveiled the first iPad mini case despite the fact that Apple has not yet announced the product. The case was made to fit the leaked specs for what is believed to be a miniature iPad, something that can end up either profitable or very expensive, depending on whether the leaked information matches the final product. Apple is expected to announce the iPad mini tomorrow.

The folks over at Wired received three iPad mini cases from Gumdrop Cases, each from the “Drop Tech Series.” The cases are rugged, black and red in color, and made to accommodate the iPad mini’s reported 7.85 inch display. A volume rocker is located on the right edge of the case, a headphone jack on the top edge, and a homescreen button on the bottom. It also has speaker openings for the iPad mini’s alleged speakers.

It’s said that the iPad mini will be available in white and black (and possibly also red and green), and will feature 16GB, 32GB, and 64GBs of storage space, depending on model. It seems there will be a WiFi-only model, and a model with mobile broadband connectivity. The current assumption is that the device will have a 1024 x 768 resolution. The cost, based on leaked info, is estimated to be between $200 and $350.

It’s also expected that Apple will announce the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina at its event tomorrow, as well as a new Mac mini and teardrop-shaped iMac. Want to stay up-to-date on the news as it comes in? We’ll be liveblogging the event, which starts at 10AM PST on October 23rd (that’s tomorrow).

Pre-orders for Microsoft Surface with Windows RT start shipping

DNP Microsoft Surface shipping

If you’re one of the many people who pre-ordered Microsoft’s Surface with Windows RT, you could be getting your tablet just in time for its official October 26th ship date — and perhaps even before then. According to a few reader tips and a confirmation email sent to WP Central, those tablets are indeed in the shipping stages and could arrive as early as next week depending on your selected delivery method. While there have been reports of delays in UK and Canada, those were apparently incorrect, and we have no reason to believe the US shipments won’t be on time. That said, if you haven’t pre-ordered and you want one soon, you better get a move on — Microsoft’s store currently shows that Surface RT with touch cover bundles are shipping in one to two weeks while standalone units are set to ship in three weeks. Or maybe you can cross your fingers and hope you’re one of five million to find one gift-wrapped under the tree.
