Tropical Storm Sandy 2012: Extreme Weather May Hit Mid-Atlantic, Northeast Regions

From Climate Central’s Andrew Freedman:

A swirl of thunderstorms in the Caribbean, which is a notorious breeding ground for October hurricanes, is expected to coalesce into Tropical Storm Sandy and possibly intensify to hurricane strength as it moves toward Jamaica, eastern Cuba, and the Bahamas by Wednesday and Thursday. But it’s what could happen after that that has some weather forecasters pondering some rather bizarre scenarios — think if a hurricane and nor’easter mated, possibly spawning a very rare and powerful hybrid storm, slamming into the Boston-to-Washington corridor early next week, with rain, snow, damaging winds, and potential storm surge flooding.

Several computer model runs have shown a slingshot scenario, in which Tropical Storm (or hurricane) Sandy initially moves out to sea east of North Carolina, but is captured by the jet stream and flung northwestward into the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast.

Organics Provide No ‘Meaningful Nutritional Benefits,’ Pediatricians Say

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) — a professional organization of more than 60,000 pediatricians — has released a new report finding no evidence that organic foods provide nutritional benefits that children cannot get from conventionally grown foods.

Although the report does say organic foods have lower pesticide levels, it concludes parents should be focused on feeding their kids a healthy diet, organic or not.

“What’s most important is that children eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products, whether those are conventional or organic foods. This type of diet has proven health benefits,” Janet Silverstein, co-author of the report and a member of the AAP’s committee on nutrition, said in a statement.

Must See HDTV (October 22nd – 28th)

Must See HDTV October 22nd 28th

While baseball’s postseason moves on to its final round, football is just hitting its stride and NBA preseason action is just beginning to get interesting. This week Blade Runner gets yet another HD home release, there’s one more presidential debate, and on Friday the maker of Pushing Daisies returns for a one-off / backdoor pilot attempt called Mockingbird Lane — check out a teaser after the break. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

I, Robot (3D)
A 3D Blu-ray release isn’t uncommon these days, however I, Robot has a fresh twist: it wasn’t in 3D in theaters, ever. Fox has made the interesting decision of converting the flick in post and releasing a 3D version exclusively for the home. Fans of the 2004 Will Smith flick can snag a $24.99 Blu-ray 3D set, but if you pre-ordered at Comic-Con, it comes with a bust of the robot character, Sonny. We’ll have to wait and see if this trend takes off (Fox says it has more titles in the pipeline), or if people prefer the standard original releases.

Forza Horizon
The Forza series has brought its brand of sim racing to Xbox consoles for several generations, but this latest version takes all of its underlying technology on a trip to the arcade side of town. You won’t be doing so much tweaking under the hood this time, but there’s still a healthy selection of cars plus options for night and off road racing to keep you interested. Joystiq was impressed enough by its “massive toy chest of hyper-accurate Hot Wheels” to give it four out of five stars, racing fans can check out a demo on Xbox Live now.

World Series
Baseball fans, it all comes down to this. For the championship in 2012 the Detroit Tigers will face TBD in an epic battle that kicks off Wednesday night. Either St. Louis or San Francisco will be representing the National League in the World Series, but we’ll have to wait until tonight’s game to know which one. The days for the games are already locked in however, so clear your schedule as needed.

HUFFPOST HILL – Debate Three: Look Who’s Talking NOW

Tonight’s debate is competing with both the NLCS and Monday Night Football, but at least the hockey moms and NASCAR dads will tune in. Todd Akin compared Claire McCaskill to a dog, though we’re pretty sure Akin’s the one who is more likely to rub his butt across a carpet. And the Romney campaign has run an inordinate number of ads during “The Andy Griffith Show,” probably in an attempt to shore up the “people who say ‘Gosh!’ vote. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Monday, October 22nd, 2012:

FINAL DEBATE ON FOREIGN POLICY, THAT THING NO ONE CARES ABOUT – Moderator Bob Schieffer has announced the topics to be discussed this evening: 1. “America’s Role in the World.” 2. “Our Longest War — Afghanistan and Pakistan.” 3. “Red Lines — Israel and Iran.” 4. “The Changing Middle East and the New Face of Terrorism.” 5. “The Rise of China and Tomorrow’s World.” No one can say how many times the president will pivot to Osama bin Laden’s death (“You know who can’t suffer from China’s unfair currency manipulation?”) or just how much the China question will become a screaming match about Toledo’s job market, but we’ll witness both at least once.

It’s going to be an uphill battle, Josh Hersh reports: “[T]here’s reason to see an ominous sign for a president who has thrown his support behind the popular uprisings in countries like Egypt and Libya: …After a wave of protests at several American embassies in countries like Tunisia and Egypt, and the devastating attack on an American diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, Obama has increasingly had to defend his policy of supporting the democratic transitions, despite the chaos some seem to have brought with them…But the American public is showing signs of growing restless. One recent poll from the Pew Research Center found that a majority of Americans do not believe the Arab revolutions will improve life in those countries. Fifty-four percent agreed that it is more important to have stability than democracy…More worrisome for the Obama campaign are the indications that his lead on foreign policy matters has been slipping somewhat, especially since the September attack in Benghazi. A recent Wall Street Journal poll gave the president an eight point lead over Romney, 46 percent to 38 percent, down seven points from the year before.” [HuffPost]

Brawl Erupts During Minnesota High School Soccer Game (VIDEO)

A brawl that broke out at the end of a high school soccer game in Minnesota Thursday night has caused both the Minnesota State High School League and the Maple Grove police department to launch separate investigations into the incident.

Prairie Seeds Academy defeated Totino Grace 2-1 in a match to determine which team would advance to the state tournament, DeadSpin notes. Just moments before the end of the game, however, a fight broke out on the field.

Totino Grace co-captain Ryan Zurbay told Fox Twin Cities that the first punch was thrown in the final seconds of the game by a Prairie Seeds player. However, Prairie Seeds head coach and athletic director Youssef Darbaki said his players had reported hearing derogatory comments by the other team, which could explain what sparked the fight.

Nothing Says Halloween Like a Bleeding Skull Candle

Remember the scene in Hamlet where he delivers an impassioned soliloquy to his dead friend’s skull? Yeah, that was fine. But now wouldn’t that scene have been vastly improved if Yorick’s skull had started spontaneously spouting blood from its eye sockets? More »

Dov Hikind, New York Democratic Legislator, To Campaign For Mitt Romney

WASHINGTON — With attention on Florida for Monday night’s presidential debate, campaign surrogates are stumping for their party’s candidate. But an exception to the party line is New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn), a prominent figure in the Orthodox Jewish community in New York who will travel to Florida later this week to help Mitt Romney, according to the New York Observer.

The paper cites the Jewish political blog Gestetner Updates which quotes an aide for Hikind as saying the politician will rally South Florida Jewish voters to support Romney.

Hikind said he believes that the U.S. under President Barack Obama has not been strong enough in supporting Israel in the face of the potential threat of a nuclear-armed Iran. Obama and predecessor George W. Bush, in conjunction with Congress and the European Union, have put in place strong sanctions on Iran and its economy in an attempt to change Tehran’s nuclear calculus.

iPhone Lightning Cable Chip Cracked, Cheap Third-Party Cables on the Way?

Ever since the iPhone 5 came out sporting a new 9-pin connector (soon to be added to the iPad) discerning shoppers have been wondering when cheap third party cables were going to hit the market. We think we saw one that lit up, but that’s still at $20, which is the same disappointing price that the official cable retails for. The problem is that Apple’s included a chip in the cable that isn’t cheap. The chip reassigns pins so the cable can be direction agnostic when plugged into a iDevices. However, a leak today to BGR shows that Chinese manufacturers may have cracked the chip, meaning that cheap third party cables can’t be that far away.  The photo above shows that multiple clones of Apple’s chip design have been manufactured–even before Apple’s partners have been able to get their offerings to market. Also, note that cables made with these chips are definitely not sanctioned by Apple, and are possibly illegal if they’re not licensed.

So if you’re looking for a second (or third, or fourth) charging cable for your iPhone 5, hold tight. They’re coming soon.
