FTC Weighs on Facial Recognition Data and Services

It’s not new that Facial Recognition does work: London had built an extensive security apparatus around that in recent years. There is also no question that the technology itself has become very reliable, but what’s new is that it has made its way to consumer products and service at a rate never seen before. Recently, Facebook has added facial recognition to automatically “tag” photos, which created more notifications, which ultimately create more user interaction and page views.

Recent smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 also has the ability to recognize people so that it’s faster to email/send them photos. Android devices can now auto-unlock using facial features (it works with photos too, so it’s not secure). But the point is that facial recognition is quickly becoming a technological commodity, which means that facial data may soon be readily available — which begs the question: how much control do you have over your facial recognition data? That’s why the FTC has stepped in with recommendations about how facial data should be collected, protected and used. (more…)

Don’t buy an iPad 3 today unless you like the old 30-pin connector

Apple’s announcing something tomorrow, and although we’re not completely sure what we’re going to see, we have a pretty good idea it involves something “mini.” But there may be a surprise update to the iPad “3″ tomorrow to bring it up to date with the rest of iOS’s new line: it will ditch the old 30-pin connector for  Apple’s new Lightning port(more…)

Growing Up Geek: Philip Palermo

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, a feature where we take a look back at our youth, and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. This week, we have our very own Philip Palermo!

Growing Up Geek: Philip Palermo

In case you couldn’t tell from that pirate / bandit / pimp / vampire pictured above, I sometimes have trouble making up my mind. It took me forever to decide what I wanted to be that Halloween — figuring out what I wanted to be when I grew up has taken even longer.

It’s strange to think that a few landmark tech purchases during my life helped make who I am today. Our family’s first computer, the NES, a used DSLR — just the simple act of bringing tech home and experimenting with it seemed to shape, reshape and re-reshape my projected career path.

Hulu Plus app coming to Windows 8

Hulu announced today that they’re bringing Hulu Plus to Windows 8 on October 26th — the day when Windows 8 will release to the public, which means you’ll be able to enjoy the service seamlessly on your new Windows 8 machine right from day one. Hulu Plus offers a better selection of shows compared to its free service, and most shows also play in high definition as well.

The Hulu Plus app will come pre-loaded on a selection of Acer and Sony tablets, and will also be available to download through the Windows Store onto any Windows 8 machine. Hulu implemented some of Microsoft’s own flavor of Windows 8 into the Hulu Plus app, and works seamlessly on tablets as well.

The app uses a tile-based UI that’s similar to the new UI featured in Windows 8. Hulu says the clean and simple user interface allows them to put “the most relevant content first, creating a visually immersive experience in the most engaging way.” We can’t argue with them really, since the UI actually does look pretty good.

A nifty feature of the new is the ability to do many actions right from the main screen, like share content with friends. If you tap an image and slide it down and then up, a menu of options will appear. This will let you share the show, add it to your queue, or just the play the show right away. You can also “pin” shows, which gives yo access to any pinned shows right from the home screen. They’ve also added “Snap View,” which allows you to watch a show in a small screen while using another app in the foreground.

In order to use the Hulu Plus app on not just Windows 8 machines, but any device, you’ll need a Hulu Plus subscription, which costs $7.99 per month.

Italian scientists guilty of manslaughter from earthquake

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake that killed 309 people in the city of L’Aquila in Italy almost four years ago is probably still embedded into people’s minds, and it wasn’t an easy day for a lot of people. And now, six Italian scientists are just now being sentenced to jail time because they are accused of providing false assurance to residents before the earthquake occurred.

A regional court in Italy found the six members of the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks guilty of multiple manslaughter. Their defense was that there is no way to predict major earthquakes, and thus are being accused of providing false information when you can’t even tell if the information is true or false in the first place.

Judge Marco Billi took over four hours to reach his verdict, and his final decision was that the scientists provided “inexact, incomplete and contradictory” information about the tremors that were felt before the earthquake occurred. The judge also ordered the defendants to pay court costs and damages in full.

Many people are calling foul on this court case, especially fellow scientists, who now feel that science itself has been put on trial. More than 5,000 scientists have already signed an open letter to Italy’s president Giorgio Napolitano stating their support for the defendants, and how the court wrongly accused the six scientists.

Bill Gates: Surface is “unbelievably great”

bill gates surfaceWith the Windows 8 launch in full swing, there is a lot of communication coming from Microsoft, but a Bill Gates interview is arguably much more interesting than a TV commercial. Of course, it won’t come as a surprise that Bill Gates supports the Microsoft Surface tablet, but it’s probably clear that it has to be more than a bit special for him since he was supported the “tablet” idea for so long.

Bill gates was still around when Microsoft’s CTO Ray Ozzie coined the “three-screen and a cloud” (TV, PC, Mobile — in 2009) which sets the goal of having a consistent experience across multiple devices. A few years later, this vision is about to have its best implementation yet with the arrival of Windows 8, Windows 8 RT and Windows Phone 8. It’s not hard to imagine that he is genuinely excited about this.

“You can’t appreciate it, without seeing it. Go to a store” says Bill Gates. Now that Microsoft stores are popping all over the country, that may ultimately be the easiest thing to do. for the details, stay tuned for our own review of the Microsoft Surface as it should come out within days. So far, what do you think of the Surface, and what would you like to see in a review? Watch the video in the full post.  (more…)

US Immigration switches from Blackberry to iPhone

It has been reported by Reuters that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is switching from Blackberry to iPhone as the “standard-issue” handset for its employees. So far, about 17600 employees are scheduled to get an iPhone, a contract estimated at $2.1M according to the report (that’s a bizarre $119 per phone. Group discount maybe?).

RIM “can no longer meet the mobile technology needs of the agency”, says the federal agency. “The iPhone services will allow these individuals to leverage reliable, mobile technology on a secure and manageable platform in furtherance of the agency’s mission,” it adds.

RIM says that it still has 1M government customers in north America, but this switch demonstrates how urgent it is for RIM to come up with a new platform. Blackberry 10 (BB10) is not scheduled to hit the market before early 2013, and even after it arrives, this will be a difficult road for RIM.

We wonder if the US Immigration has evaluated Android, and if yes, what their conclusion was on that operating system. What do you think of this move? Are you surprised?

Cooler Master iPhone 5 Bumpers Wrap Your Phone in Extra Aluminum

Unlike some of you out there, I prefer to keep my iPhone nicely wrapped up in a case. Since I know that phones can be easily dropped, and that I want to ensure that I will get maximum value when I upgrade to another phone, it makes sense to use a case. I’ve never particularly liked bumpers, since they are so thin, but check out this one from Cooler Master.

Cooler Master’s Aluminum Bumper is slightly different from others that I’ve seen since it’s almost a complete case. It covers not only the edges, but parts of the back of your iPhone, while still leaving much of Apple’s industrial design visible. This makes it an interesting option in my opinion. The case is made from aircraft-grade aluminum, polished to give a near mirror finish on the edges, and brushed on the back. There’s a thin layer of EVA foam on the inside to keep your phone from getting scratched as well. It’s also not supposed to hamper the antenna in any way, which is always good.

There’s a seamless slide-n-lock design that allows you to take the bumper off easily, which is a must since I change/rotate cases every couple of weeks or so. CoolerMaster hasn’t announced pricing yet, but it will be launched soon.
