Verizon announces LG Spectrum 2

Here we are with yet another smartphone that you might be interested in, especially if you are looking to upgrade your current contract that is set to expire. Of course, you will need to rock to Verizon Wireless if you want to pick up the LG Spectrum 2. The LG Spectrum 2 is a Verizon exclusive, so you are unable to pick it up from other mobile carriers in the US, and it is already available Stateside online since yesterday, while arriving at brick-and-mortar Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in the weeks ahead for a surprisingly affordable $99.99 price point – after you hand in a $50 mail-in rebate and agree to a new two year contract, of course.

It is said that the LG Spectrum 2 will be able to deliver a unique wireless experience courtesy of an ecosystem of features and accessories, enabling customers to do away with pesky cables that tend to get all tangled up from time to time – especially so when you leave your cables alone. There is the special battery cover that paves the way for wireless charging, and best of all is, this is thrown into the mix for free.

You are able to share information such as contacts, maps and websites with others sans wires thanks to the built-in near-field communications (NFC) capability, where all you need to do is just tap a pair of compatible phones together, and you’re good to go. NFC is also capable of working with reprogrammable LG Tag+ stickers, creating special smartphone modes for different situations and places that you might be in, while SmartShare allows you to wirelessly view pictures and watch videos on a DLNA-enabled device.

Other hardware specifications include a generous 4.7-inch True HD display, Corning Gorilla Glass for that added touch of durability, 4G LTE connectivity, an 8-megapixel camera at the back, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and 1080p HD video recording capability among others. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is the operating system of choice, where it runs on a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Krait processor, accompanied by 16GB of internal memory with a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes. Does this sound like the smartphone for you?

Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon hands-on (video)

DNP Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon handson

Now that Microsoft’s officially flooded the world with good tidings of Windows Phone 8, it’s the turn of OEMs and carriers to get the word out about their own Microsoft-flavored smartphones. We finally got a chance to play with Nokia’s previously leaked and recently announced Lumia 822 for Verizon, a mid-range handset similar to the Lumia 820 on AT&T and the Lumia 810 for T-Mobile that will cost $99 with a two-year contract. Availability is slated for sometime in November — it’s been a long time since we’ve seen a Nokia device on Verizon (sorry, but those Pantech-built models don’t count), so this is rather exciting news.

Spec-wise the Lumia 822 features a 4.3-inch WVGA ClearBlack AMOLED display, an eight-megapixel autofocus Carl Zeiss camera, a 1.2MP front-facing shooter, a Qualcomm dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB or RAM, 16GB of internal flash, microSD support for additional storage, and optional Qi-compatible wireless charging. Radios include CDMA and LTE for Verizon, GSM / GPRS / EDGE / UMTS / HSPA+ for global roaming, WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, A-GPS and NFC.

In terms of design, the Lumia 822 is much curvier than its siblings and the battery cover doesn’t wrap around the sides. The camera pod and flash placement matches the longitudinal setup from the Lumia 920 and Lumia 810 instead of the transverse layout found on the Lumia 820. At 142g (5 ounces) it’s quite a hefty device, but despite being 11.2mm (0.44 inches) thick, it feels very nice in hand. Build quality is solid, which is pretty much what you’d expect from Nokia. The phone will be available in three colors: black, white and our favorite, a stunning shade of grey. See for yourself in the gallery below, and peek after the break for our hands-on video.

Hurricane Sandy Looting, Fights Plague South Brooklyn (PHOTOS)

Water that had risen six feet high hadn’t completely drained away from the streets of Coney Island in Brooklyn, N.Y., yet looters had already rifled through the remains of vulnerable shops on Mermaid Avenue.

At about 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, workers arrived at Mega Aid Pharmacy to find that not only had Hurricane Sandy obliterated the building’s interior the night before, but thieves had broken in and gone through more than 10,000 pharmaceutical items. Most of the stolen goods were prescription meds.

“The water went away and these people started walking down the streets and just robbed stores,” a frustrated worker at the pharmacy, who wished to remain anonymous, told HuffPost Crime.

Samsung outs Nexus 10 with 64GB of storage on website, typo or accidental leak?

When the Nexus 10 was announced, it was revealed that it would arrive in 16GB or 32GB versions. There was certainly no word on a 64GB version although thanks to a Korean press release on Samsung’s website, they might have accidentally revealed that a 64GB could be available. The image above was part of the press release, although it has since been replaced with the 64GB version edited out. Now there is a possibility that the original image uploaded was done in error, or perhaps there is a chance that Samsung accidentally leaked that information before it was meant to be shared with the public. Either way we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled, but until then we suggest that if you are looking for more storage capacity on your Nexus 10 than just 32GB, you best not hold your breath, at least until it has been officially confirmed (or denied if it was really just a typo).

Bryan Singer & ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’: Director Returns To Franchise

Like a wayward Wolverine, Bryan Singer is returning to the X-Men fold, closing a deal Tuesday to direct the next film in the franchise, X-Men: Days of Future Past, EW has confirmed. He replaces X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn, who stepped back from the director’s chair last week for unspecified reasons, though he will reportedly stay on as a producer and screenwriter.

Samsung Nexus 10 announced

The tablet market has seen a reversal of roles of sorts, if you were to analyze it. For starters, Apple, when Steve Jobs was still alive, said that the 7-inch tablet market does not make sense, and tablets released at that size was pronounced to be DOA – Dead On Arrival. Rather ironic then, to see Apple step into the 7-inch tablet market with their recently announced iPad mini, don’t you think so? Samsung, on the other hand, had always tried to best Apple in the 10-inch tablet segment with their attempts coming in the forms of the Galaxy Tab family, while issuing 7-inch models under the same banner to boot. Their latest attempt, however, carries the Nexus flag of Google, resulting in the Google Nexus 10 which will also be the first device to ship with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in tow.

One major talking point about the Samsung Nexus 10 would be this – it is touted to be the world’s highest resolution tablet display, offering new multi-user support, immersive HD content as well as the very best that Google apps deliver, making sure that you have a little bit of something for just about anyone and everyone. Measuring a mere 8.9mm thin and tipping the scales at just 603 grams ,the Nexus 10 will be powered by a speedy dual-core A15 processor and advanced MIMO WiFi, where the latter claims to deliver web browsing speeds that are up to 4 times faster compared to standard issue WiFi.

In front, there is a 1.9-megapixel camera, allowing you to look at your highest resolution best while you chat over video with up to nine friends simultaneously via Google+ Hangouts. The Nexus 10 does seem to be a tablet for everyone – tap your photo to sign in to your own user account, and you can set up different accounts for different users just like how your Windows system is like. Not only that, there is also the new Daydream mode on the Samsung Nexus 10 that allows you to display useful or delightful information on your tablet even when it is charging.

Other hardware specifications include a micro HDMI port, micro USB support, a 10” display at 2560 x 1600 resolution (300ppi), Bluetooth 3.0 and NFC support, and a massive 9,000mAh battery to keep this puppy going for hours on end. Does the iPad have something to be scared of? I would go out on a limb here and say yes, resoundingly.

Log Cabin Republicans’ Mitt Romney Endorsement Prompts Los Angeles Couple To End Membership

WASHINGTON — The Log Cabin Republicans have been important in Kevin and Don Norte’s lives. They run a blog called “BlogCabin: Our Life As Gay Republicans,” and their affiliation with the group is mentioned in the second line of their Wikipedia page. They figure they’ve been members for about a decade, with Kevin winning a “Grassroots Leadership Award” from the group in 2009. At one point, Kevin served as a California trustee, and Don was on the board of the Los Angeles chapter. A fellow member was one of the best men at their wedding.

But on Oct. 25, Kevin and Don tweeted from their joint Twitter account that they were leaving the group: “@LogCabinGOP Please accept our resignation from #LogCabin effective immediately.” The reason? The group’s endorsement of Mitt Romney.

“Leaving them is kind of like a divorce,” Kevin said sadly in an interview with The Huffington Post that night.

Scariest Science Experiments Ever, From Bat Bombs To Zombie Dogs

By: Tia Ghose, LiveScience Staff
Published: 10/30/2012 11:00 AM EDT on LiveScience

Since Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the popular imagination has been alive with stories of mad scientists and the chilling experiments they conduct. But sometimes, real life is even more frightening than fiction.

From zombie dogs to mind control, here are some of the scariest experiments ever done.

1. Earth-swallowing black holes

When physicists first flipped the switch on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), at least a few people held their breath. For years, rumors had circulated that the particle accelerator could create mini black holes that would destroy Earth. In 2008, a group even filed suit to stop the particle collider from turning on, arguing that the atomic collisions could cause the end of the world. [Top 10 Ways to Destroy Earth]

Though it sounded slightly plausible, there’s basically no chance that the LHC will destroy the Earth. A comprehensive study calculated that cosmic rays bombarding Earth routinely create higher energy collisions than the particle accelerator. According to that study, "nature has already conducted the equivalent of about a hundred thousand LHC experimental programs on Earth already — and the planet still exists."

Of course, even if the world is destroyed, at least we have a consolation prize: Earlier this year, physicists at the Swiss site announced they had found a particle that may be the Higgs boson, the elusive particle thought to give all other particles their mass.

2. Zombie dogs

In 1940, Russian scientists released a video of severed dog heads that were kept alive for several hours, wiggling their ears in response to sounds and even licking their mouths. The scientists claimed they could keep the animals alive by an artificial blood circulation system.

But that was just the first time scientists had created zombie dogs. In 2005, American scientists created another pack of zombie dogs. The team rapidly killed the dogs by flushing all the blood from their bodies and replacing it with oxygen- and sugar-filled saline, according to the researchers from the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research at the University of Pittsburgh.

Three hours later, the team gave the dogs a blood transfusion, and an electric shock. The dogs were resurrected, and while some had permanent damage, most were no worse for wear. The research, published in the Yearbook of Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine, suggested that the treatment could one day revive people who are hemorrhaging blood too quickly for doctors to repair their injuries.

3. Mind control

Talk about a bad trip. In the 1950s, the CIA launched a top-secret program called MKULTRA to look for drugs and other techniques to use in mind control. Over the next two decades, the agency used hallucinogens, sleep deprivation and electrical shock techniques in an effort to perfect brainwashing.

CIA scientists conducted more than 149 research projects as part of MKULTRA. In one, they tested the effects of LSD in social situations by slipping the drug to unwitting bar patrons in New York and San Francisco. In others, they enticed heroin addicts to take the hallucinogen by offering them heroin. [Trippy Tales: The History of 8 Hallucinogens]

Spooked by the Watergate scandal, in 1973 CIA Director Richard Helms ordered documents related to the project destroyed. However, some documents escaped destruction, and by 1977 a Freedom of Information Act request released more than 20,000 pages on the sordid program to author John Marks.

4. Deadly nurses

While the CIA was working so hard to control people’s minds, it turns out it’s pretty easy to get people to do what you say: All you have to do is ask like you mean it.

In 1963, social psychologist Stanley Milgram had shown that Yale University students were willing to administer a deadly shock to strangers if an authority figure requested it.

But psychiatrist Charles Hofling wanted to see how obedience influenced decisions when people didn’t know they were part of an experiment. In his innocuously titled 1966 paper "An Experimental Study of Nurse-Physician Relationships," Hofling described a chilling experimental protocol: An unknown doctor called real nurses on the hospital’s night shift and asked them to administer twice the maximum dose of an unapproved drug to a patient. Unbeknown to the nurses, the "medicine" was actually a harmless sugar pill and the doctor was a fake.

While it’s frightening that the experiment was given the green light at all, it’s perhaps even scarier that 21 out of 22 nurses complied. The researchers clearly labeled the drug, so nurses knew they were overdosing their patients. The nurses also violated hospital rules by taking instructions over the phone and giving an unapproved medicine. The study showed just how much the aura of authority could cloud people’s ethical judgments.

5. Bat bombs

In World War II, the U.S. Marine Corps worked on a project to train bats as kamikaze bombers against the Japanese. A Pennsylvania dentist, Lytle Adams, first proposed the idea to the White House in 1942, after visiting the bat-filled caves at Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Adams proposed strapping tiny incendiary explosives to the animals and exploiting their use of echolocation to find roosts in barns and attics. According to Lytle’s plan, the bomb-strapped bats would fly to Japan, nestle in the nooks of the mostly wooden buildings in Japanese cities, and set them ablaze.

The Marine Corps captured thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats and developed explosive devices to strap to their backs. The project was scrapped in 1943, probably because the U.S. government had made progress on the atomic bomb.

Willow Smith Style Evolution: Sugar And Spice Child Star Turned Free-Spirited Tween (PHOTOS)

When I was a little girl, one of my favorite things to do was hide inside my mother’s walk-in closet and slip into her sequin tops, bold-shouldered blazers and kitten heels. Yet, my fashion fantasy only lasted as long as mom was busy grading papers or frying chicken. In a matter of minutes, I’d be found and given that look which translated into: “You better get back to your room and clothes.” So, you can see why I envy Willow Smith and her edgy style that’s practically nurtured by her mama, Jada Pinkett-Smith.

The youngest star of the über-talented Smith family definitely had her cutesy moments on the red carpet wearing fluffy frocks and ruffled rompers. However, once she released her catchy dance record “Whip My Hair” in 2010, Willow’s vocals and outfits were turning heads. From lace-up Converse shoe-pants to one-sleeved leather jackets, she’s given fellow Roc Nation artists Rihanna and Rita Ora stiff competition. And that includes taking risks with her constantly-changing coiff.

As Willow celebrates her 12th birthday on Wednesday (October 31st), we’re taking a look back at the youngster’s style over the years. Vote on all her looks in the slideshow below.
