Japan court rules Apple did not infringe two Samsung patents

Japan court rules Apple did not infringe two Samsung patents

In the latest scuffle between Apple and Samsung, a Tokyo court has ruled that the iPhone 4 and 4S do not infringe on two of Sammy’s patents. According to The Asahi Shimbun, a decision on September 14th found Apple had not violated a patent related to app downloads, as Samsung’s method is different. A dispute regarding flight / airplane mode also went in Cupertino‘s favor on October 11th, because the technology in question was regarded by the court as incremental. Only one case against Apple remains undecided in Japan — for a patent on using “homescreen space” — but, as usual, don’t expect that to be the last chapter in the neverending story.

Microsoft retiring Facebook and Twitter apps for Xbox 360 in latest Dashboard update

Uh-oh, it looks like Xbox 360 gamers who check Facebook and Twitter updates via their console will no longer be able to do so once the Dashboard update arrives. This was confirmed by a Microsoft representative who said that Microsoft will be retiring the Facebook and Twitter apps in an effort to “streamline” app functionality. When asked by the folks at IGN if Facebook or Twitter could be making a return in the future, Microsoft declined to comment. In the meantime if you must get your Facebook or Twitter fix, Microsoft has suggested that gamers do so via Internet Explorer 9 which will be part of their Fall Update. Any Xbox 360 owners out there inconvenienced by this piece of news?

Gamestop offers BioShock Infinite: Industrial Revolution puzzler with pre-order

Fans of the BioShock franchise are undoubtedly waiting for the next game in the franchise to launch called BioShock Infinite. That game is up for pre-order now and gamers who place their order at Gamestop will get a second game free of charge. The pre-order get you BioShock Infinite when it launches and a copy of another BioShock game that you can play right now.

That second game is a flash-based puzzle game called BioShock Infinite: Industrial Revolution. This little puzzle game was apparently made specifically for the Gamestop pre-order promotion. The game has players filling the shoes of the factory worker in the BioShock Infinite world who completes puzzles to support one of the two factions in the full game.

The game promises more than 50 levels to play. BioShock Infinite currently has a release date of February 26, 2013. That release date has already been pushed back in the past so more delays are always a possibility. What we know about BioShock Infinite so far is that the developers promise the new game will dwarf the original in scope and ambition.

The developers have apparently been working on the game for about four years. The original launch date was set as of October 16 with availability for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. The developers say that they have done things no one has ever done in a first-person shooter before.

Assassin’s Creed 3 PlayStation 3 bundle for Hong Kong revealed with bonus Assassin’s Creed hoodie

If you’re a gamer in Hong Kong and you were planning on picking up Assassin’s Creed 3 on either the PlayStation 3 or the PlayStation Vita, it seems that Sony has announced several bonuses that looks to be exclusive to the Hong Kong market. Starting with the PlayStation 3 bundle, this will include the new PlayStation 3 with a 500GB HDD, a copy of the Assassin’s Creed 3 game in English, an exclusive multiplayer DLC and an Assassin’s Creed 3 jacket with a hood (pictured above), although in all honesty it looks more like poncho.

For those who prefer playing the game on the PS Vita, the Vita bundle will include a WiFi only version of the console, a copy of Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation, a special DLC and a limited edition Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation protection film. Now if you own Assassin’s Creed 3 for the PlayStation 3 but you decide to get Liberation for your PS Vita, you will also get to play as Connor in an exclusive mission set in New York, and gain access to the Tomahawk weapon, an ammo pouch upgrade and a French Agile multiplayer character. These two bundles will be released in Hong Kong come 31st of October and will be priced at HK$2,280 (~$294).

Griffin unveils Moto TC Monster and Moto TC Racer iOS controlled toy cars

Custom built remote controlled cars can be quite an expensive hobby, but if you don’t have that much cash to spare, perhaps Griffin’s new line of iOS remote controlled cars might be a much more affordable solution. Griffin’s new offering comes in two flavors – the Moto TC Monster and the Moto TC Racer, with the Monster representing a monster truck, while the Racer represents a smaller, buggy-like racing car. Both cars are controlled via an accompanying iOS app, although the difference is that the Monster will pair with your iOS device using Bluetooth, while the Racer will use an RF sensor plugged into your device’s headphone jack.

For either car, the app will support virtual steering, or the user can tilt their device left or right if they prefer motion-based steering. The Monster offers a bit more features in which the user can setup a pre-made route, so the truck can drive itself without the user having to interact with it (kind of defeats the purpose but we guess to each their own!). If this sounds like a toy you wouldn’t mind owning, the Moto TC Monster is available for purchase for $59.99, while the Moto TC Racer will get priced at $29.99 and will be available mid November.

These aluminum balls are an interesting portable cooking concept

While there are portable stove solutions for camping, there’s always room for innovation and improvement, especially if it can save you some space and reduce the bulk in which campers have to haul with them. Designer Virang Akhiyaniya has thought about that and has come up with a rather interesting solution called the Throbber. Unsavory connotations aside, these are aluminum balls which can be placed in pots filled with liquid to heat it up, cooking the contents of the pot in the process.

While we’re sure that there’s more to the technology than meets the eye, Akhiyaniya has described the Throbber of featuring an induction coil, power circuit and vibration circuit, in which the vibration circuit is used to help the Throbber move around in the pot on its own. In fact its designer has also suggested that the Throbber can be operated via a mobile device. Sounds pretty interesting but unfortunately it looks like a concept for now, but what do you guys think? Would you be interested in bringing the Throbber with you on camping trips?

Class-action suit filed against Apple over iPhones locked to AT&T network

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Apple by two individuals named Zach Ward and Thomas Buchar. The suit was filed against Apple over locking consumers to the AT&T network without receiving the consent of the consumers to have their iPhones locked. The duo and their legal counsel are seeking to force Apple to provide consumers with unlock codes for the iPhone.

The suit also hopes to force Apple to provide unlock codes as a matter of practice on future versions of the iPhone. The suit was filed last week against Apple in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco. The complaint lists a single count against Apple of “Conspiracy to monopolize the iPhone voice and data services aftermarket in violation of Section 2 of the Sherman Act.”

The suit is based in part on the allegation that Apple entered into a secret five-year contract with AT&T establishing AT&T as the exclusive provider of voice and data services for iPhone customers from launch in 2007 through 2012. The suit states that the plaintiffs and other class action members who purchased the iPhone didn’t agree to use AT&T for five years.

By not disclosing the five-year exclusivity agreement with AT&T to consumers, Apple effectively locked the iPhone into using the AT&T network for five years without the user’s knowledge. The plaintiffs are seeking declaratory and injunctive relief, treble and exemplary damages, legal costs, and the software unlock codes mentioned before. The suit also seeks to force Apple to disclose that the iPhone is locked to specific network.
