Circuit of the Americas F1 track officially opens

If you follow cars or automotive racing all, you’re probably aware that Austin, Texas has a new F1 track that will be used this year called Circuit of the Americas. While the F1 race is still several weeks away, the track has just now been officially completed and the ribbon-cutting ceremony was performed over the weekend. As part of the festivities, hoards of rich and famous drivers turned up in all sorts of exotic vehicles.

The race track has 20 turns and spans 3.4 miles. All the Ferraris and other exotic vehicles that showed up at the track were owned by VIPs who actually got a chance to drive their vehicles on the racetrack. I know hoards of track day automotive enthusiasts who are frothing at the mouth for a chance to drive on this racetrack. The track ribbon-cutting ceremony also featured a number of race ready cars from various automotive racing series.

There were also racing cars on hand to zip around the track included a mid-engine Corvette racing car from the Grand Am series, a Lotus F1 car, and a crazy three-seat F1 car people could ride in. Mario Andretti was on hand at the event and made some hot laps around the track in an old school John Player Special Lotus 79 Cosworth.

I guess my invitation to this VIP and press event got lost in the mail. The first major racing event to be held this track will be the inaugural US Grand Prix the weekend of November 16. This is the Formula One event the track was built for. After that, I can only hope the track will be open to driving enthusiasts and various track day organizations at a decent price.

Instagram will translate Instagram mentions to Twitter mentions automatically, makes life a little easier

Given that Instagram has a community of its own and that people do subscribe to other Instagram accounts, naturally @mentions do pop up ever so often. However those @mentions could get confusing especially when you have friends on Twitter and Instagram who have different handles. This might be because their username was already taken on Twitter/Instagram which means that had to come up with an alternative. Granted it’s not a huge inconvenience but it could get confusing once in a while. Well the good news is that if you’re an avid user of both Twitter and Instagram along with your friends, Instagram has updated itself and will now “magically” translate @mentions for users whose Twitter and Instagram handles differ. Like we said, it’s not a huge inconvenience before but we guess now it’s just one less thing to think about. If you’d like to learn more about this update, head on over to Instagram’s blog for the details.

Apple recalling some iMacs with 1TB Seagate hard drives due to possible system failure

It seems that Apple has determined that several iMacs of the 21.5” and 27” variety sold in between October 2009 to July 2011 might have faulty hard drives that could cause system failure. This might be of interest to iMac owners with a 1TB Seagate hard drive as this is the hard drive that Apple has identified to be the problem. Of course iMac owners should be notified by email if they have registered their product with Apple, and according to the email, Apple will be replacing those drives for free. If you think that your iMac could be affected, we guess you should back up your data just to be safe in the event your hard drive does fail. Apple has also stated that you can head on over to an Apple retail store for the replacement, an authorized Apple service provider or you can always contact Apple’s technical support for more options.

Microsoft announces Office 365 University Edition, makes it affordable for students

If you’ve ever been a student in college or university, then you are probably familiar with all the different tricks and methods that students get up to in order to scrap enough money for food and entertainment. Basically that translates to living on a rather tight budget which means that other things we want might be out of reach. Fortunately Microsoft has a plan and has since announced Microsoft Office 365 University Edition. Priced at $80, this edition of Microsoft Office 365 will last you the duration of the course (four years) and will include the essentials – Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access.

On top of that Microsoft will also be bundling 20GB of free storage of SkyDrive and thanks to Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype, owners of the University Edition will also be given 60 Skype world minutes every month, letting students call their friends and family. Naturally this edition of Microsoft Office 365 will only be eligible to full- and/or part-time university or college students, faculty and staff in accredited institutions.

$150 AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 priced to undercut rivals (but not HTC)

Nokia’s Lumia 920 has been prematurely priced up for its US-exclusive launch on AT&T, with Best Buy spilling the competitive costs for the Windows Phone 8 handset. The 32GB 4G smartphone will be $149.99 with a new, two-year AT&T agreement, according to Best Buy’s listing, while unactivated it will set shoppers back $599.99. However, even undercutting most mainstream smartphones by fifty bucks won’t make it the cheapest Windows Phone 8 flagship.

The Windows Phone 8X by HTC, for instance, is currently listed at $99.99 with a new, two-year agreement from the same retailer. It’s unactivated, unsubsidized price is the same $599.99, but HTC is obviously being more aggressive than its Finnish counterpart.

At $100, that pits the HTC 8X against Apple’s iPhone 4S, though the iOS smartphone has twice the storage of its 8GB Windows Phone rival. Considering HTC also opted not to give the 8X a memory card slot, instead preserving the unbroken lines of its unibody plastic casing, that could prove to be a considerable limitation, even with Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud storage push.

The Lumia 920 lacks a microSD slot too, but at least gets 32GB of internal capacity. Best Buy has no listings for the smartphone’s accessories, such as the wireless charging plates, though based on UK pricing we’re not expecting them to come cheaply.

Folding@Home packs up on PlayStation 3: over 100 million computation hours added to research

FoldingHome packs up on PlayStation 3

Squared away in the PlayStation 3‘s latest software update post, Sony announced that the Folding@Home service will be retired starting next month, alongside the console’s 4.30 update. The project, which tied into Stanford University’s work on protein folding and research into the causes of a diseases like Alzheimer’s, pulled in over 15 million PlayStation owners since it started in 2007. In fact, according to Stanford’s client statistics, PS3 users offered the second greatest contribution after Windows devices, adding more than 100 million computation hours to the research project — and well, we did our bit.

Ben Heck creates new ultra-portable Xbox 360 laptop

If you’re serious gamer who quickly has withdrawals when you’re away from your Xbox 360, you’ll certainly appreciate the latest mod Ben Heck has created. Heck made a name for himself years ago with this slick Xbox 360 portable mods and his latest is very impressive. Heck created the portable Xbox 360 laptop in the season finale of The Ben Heck Show.

Heck took apart a normal Xbox 360 gaming system and integrated the hardware into a new and much more portable design. The mod features the Xbox ring of light, a TI audio amplifier offering integrated stereo sound, and a volume control to streamline the controls of the console. Heck also created a custom enclosure for the system that looks factory built.

The system uses a LED backlit display thanks to a thin profile and to use less power. During the mod, Heck notes that you can part out an old set of PC speakers for the audio amp. The enclosure was made using a Makerbot Replicator and a material called Sintra.

The routing and design of the enclosure is one of the most interesting parts of the project. The LCD panel using the project is an LED backlit 16-inch LCD. That should provide plenty of screen space and resolution for most games. You can check out the whole project in the video below.

Apple rumored to phase out iPad 2 after iPad mini goes on sale

When Apple launched their new iPad (third gen), they kept the iPad 2 around as a cheaper alternative for those who didn’t really see the need for a new display or 4G LTE connectivity. Well if you’re still thinking about picking up that iPad 2, you best hurry as according to the rumors, it seems that Apple could be phasing out the iPad 2 once the iPad mini has been launched. This speculation is thanks to an investors note sent by Rob Cihra of Evercore Partners in which Cihra claims the iPad 2 will stop being sold to support Apple’s overall vision. With the iPad mini supposedly being priced cheaper, we guess as far as price points are concerned, the iPad mini would be a cheaper alternative compared to the third gen iPad, although opting for a smaller display might be a very different decision customers have to make versus older hardware (iPad 2 versus iPad 3). Either way we’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but you might want to take it into consideration nonetheless.

T-Mobile sends out invites to an event on the 29th of October

T-Mobile logoIt seems that T-Mobile has been sending out invites to an event on the 29th of October. It is not clear as to what the event is about, but coincidentally it is also the same day that Google will be holding their Android event, which more or less has been revealed to be when the LG Nexus, the Nexus 10 tablet and Android 4.2 will be making their debut. At the same time it seems that Microsoft will also be holding an event on the same day itself, so could we be looking at T-Mobile announcing their Windows Phone 8 lineup, or possibly the announcement of a T-Mobile Nexus handset/tablet? What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments below! In the meantime we guess we will just have to wait this one out, but do check back with us on the 29th of October for the details!
