New BioShock Infinite trailer revealed

Heads up gamers – if you’re looking forward to getting your hands on BioShock Infinite, or if you’re still on the fence, well the good news is that a new trailer for the game has been released. This trailer contains footage from the gameplay itself, so gamers will be able to get a better idea of what they can expect, and at the same time give the gamer a bit of background information on the main character in the game. It also showcases some new abilities along with some cut scenes. So far based on the trailer alone, the game is looking pretty good so if you’re curious, check it out in the video above.

In the meantime for fans of the franchise, last week the Premium and Ultimate Songbird editions of the game were revealed and are up for pre-order. BioShock Infinite is set to debut on the PlayStation 3 in February 2013 with support for the Playstation Move controller.

DC Universe Home Turf DLC gives players a lair

Sony Online Entertainment has announced a new DLC available soon for the video game DC Universe Online. The DLC is called Home Turf and is the sixth downloadable content pack offered for the DC Universe Online video game. The DLC will be available in early 2013 for PC and PS3 players.

The download content adds customizable housing to the video game for the first time, allowing players to have their own lair. The download also adds in new customizable backdrops for combat as well. Players will be able to design their lairs and just about any way they can think of including the ability to fashion their space to be similar to the Hall of Doom or Watchtower.

The player spaces are also going to double as battlegrounds allowing players to challenge each other in one-on-one player versus player matches. The Home Turf content will also bring new missions and boss fights at four iconic locations within the game, including Stryker’s Island, Arkham Asylum, Steelworks and Ace Chemicals.

Each of the locations will have 10 new missions the players will be able to complete to earn Marks of Triumph. Those Marks of Triumph will enable players to upgrade their lair and unlock other benefits. Home Turf will be offered as a free download for Legendary members and will be available as paid content for free and premium players.

LG H160 sliding tablet and V325 all-in-one PC pack Windows 8

LG has outed a duo of new Windows 8 machines, the H160 sliding-convertible tablet and a 23-inch touchscreen all-in-one, the V325, with the promise of a standalone touchscreen version in the pipeline. The LG H160 has an 11.6-inch touchscreen and runs Windows 8 on a sliding/tilting form-factor, with a QWERTY keyboard revealed when the display is pushed up with LG’s new “Auto-Sliding” mechanism.

The display itself is an LCD IPS panel with 178-degree viewing angles, while connectivity includes USB, an HDMI port, microSD card slot, and the usual wireless options. The whole thing is 15.9mm thick and weighs 1.05kg – somewhat hefty for a tablet, we have to say – but manages to fit a battery good for up to 10hrs use.

There’s also a “Smart” touch pen, though it’s not clear if that’s a simple capacitive stylus of a proper active-digitizer version; we’re hoping the latter.

As for the LG V325, that’s a 23-inch Full HD AIO PC with 10-finger multitouch and a digital TV tuner, allowing for standalone TV viewing without having to boot into Windows 8. It comes with a remote control just to complete the illusion.

When you’re actually doing some work (or gaming), however, there’s an Intel Core i5 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT640M graphics, and support for 3D, while LG says the V325 can boot up in half the time of its Windows 7 predecessors.

LG says there’ll also be a display-only version of the AIO PC, the LG ET83, launching from October 26, targeting those content with their PC/notebook but wanting touchscreen control. The company will also have new ultrabooks – the LG Z355 and Z460 – and other laptops and desktops running Microsoft’s new OS, again from October 26.

We’ve more on Windows 8, meanwhile,  in our full review.

AMC returns to DISH Network after $700m settlement

DISH Network has announced it has reached a settlement with AMC subsidiary Voom, splashing out $700m in cash and getting a variety of channels and a chunk of wireless spectrum in return. The agreement will see AMC content – as well as other channels – rejoin DISH’s service immediately, though DISH will have to pass back the 20-percent share in Voom it currently holds.

AMC content was pulled from DISH boxes back in July, after the two companies failed to reach a satisfactory renegotiation of their contract. That meant no more Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, or Mad Men, something which unsurprisingly didn’t leave subscribers feeling too great.

However, as of Sunday, AMC returned to DISH channel 131, while the Sundance Channel, Fuse, WE tv, and IFC will show up again on November 1.

As for the wireless spectrum, DISH now has the use of 500MHz of wireless multichannel video distribution and data service (MVDDS) spectrum licenses, previously held by Voom. They apparently service a population of around 150m, spread across 45 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

DISH hasn’t said exactly what it plans to do with the new spectrum access, though promises “digital expansion opportunities” for AMC and other content.

LG announces Windows 8 12-inch slider laptop hybrid and all-in-one PC (updated)

LG announces Windows 8 slider laptop and allinone PC

Windows 8’s imminent launch continues to draw out even more devices in almost every permutation imaginable. LG’s up next, with its collection ranging from a familiar-looking V325 all-in-one PC, through to a slider PC with tablet skills. The size of LG’s 11.6-inch H160 hybrid means we’re not certain whether it’ll be running Windows RT or the more power-intensive complete package. LG’s brief explanation below the press shots also suggests we’re only looking at two models for now — despite the three devices on show here; presumably that tablet is just the laptop transformed, given that the company decided to put that particular family of devices on the back burner. The hybrid laptop houses its own auto-slide button, and measures in at 15.9mm thick, despite the built-in keyboard. The 11.6-inch screen is another LG-made IPS panel, promising up to 178 degrees of crisp visibility, while the manufacturer expects the battery to last up to 10 hours. Connectivity encompasses WiFi, HDMI output and a USB port and — according to Google’s translation — a microSD card slot. The device will have to compete for fans against Sony’s similarly-sliding VAIO Duo 11 — not to mention Toshiba’s U925t Ultrabook.

The touchscreen V325 AIO packs all the thinking parts behind a 23-inch display, with up to 10-point touch sensitivity. There’s a (presumably Korea-only) TV tuner built-in, which can be activated without powering up the whole PC, while processing powering is provided by a third-generation Core i5 processor and NVIDIA’s GeForce GT640M. Both devices are currently set to remain on home turf for now, starting from October 26th and will be accompanied by LG’s latest range of Ultrabooks, refreshed with Windows 8 software.

The Future of Data Storage Is… Cassette Tape?

While the future of storage on your laptop is undoubtedly solid state, it’s more difficult to predict how the huge tranches of data in server farms will be housed in the future. Recent suggestions, though, predict the rebirth of an old technology: the humble casette tape. More »

Italy Supreme Court: Mobile phones do cause brain tumors

The eternal debate rages on even after this landmark ruling, and I am not referring to Pepsi vs Coke or the Bird vs Johnson, or even Ali vs Foreman, but rather, do mobile phones (smartphones fall under this category too, for that matter) cause cancer in the brain or not? Italy’s Supreme Court has ruled so, citing that they found a ‘causal link’ between 60-year old businessman Innocente Marcolini’s mobile phone use and his brain tumor. Apparently, Innocente used his mobile phone at work for up to half a dozen hours each day – for a good 12 years.

Granted, that is far longer than what the average man on the street would spend on his handset, but then again, can you say that this is not evidence that prolonged exposure to mobile phone use could be a cancer causing agent? Of course, there are also many other factors to take into consideration such as age, genetics, environment, stress levels, the works, but to discount it entirely would be foolhardy. Experts figure out that this landmark ruling would result in even more legal claims to be filed from victims. What do you think, and which side of the fence do you lean on? If you want to remain on the safe paranoid android side, then you might want to explore the use of Bluetrek headsets. Take more calcium in your daily diet too, as there were whispers of radiation from your mobile phone reducing your bone density, too.

Xbox 360: 70 million sold and counting

Microsoft is proud to announce yet another milestone that they have just passed where their Xbox 360 console is concerned, touching the 70 million mark. This figure came about nearly 7 years after it was officially launched (which was way back in November 2005, making it the first of the current generation consoles to hit the market as the Sony PS3 came out only a year after that). The 70 million figure would thrust the Xbox 360 into the Top 10 best selling console of all time at number 8, edging out the Sony PS3 at 64 million, while being behind the Sony PSP at 74 million.

The Sony PS2 is sitting comfortably at the top of the pile, looking down from a height of 153.6 million units sold, using the Nintendo DS as its footstool. It was just early last year when Microsoft announced a 50 million unit sales, so over the course of nearly two years, you can say that a fair amount of Xbox 360 made the move from store shelf to living room. I guess the dark clouds of the red ring of death is now a thing of the past, no? Perhaps folks are snapping up more Xbox 360s in an attempt to join an intelligence agency?
