Samsung GT-N5100 spotted, could be a 7.7″ Galaxy Note

It looks like Samsung might have another Galaxy Note device planned, this time of the 7.7” variety. This was revealed thanks to its model number, the GT-N5100, although the exact specifications of the device remain unknown. What we do know is that it will reportedly have a display resolution of 800×1280, and it will also be powered by a quad-core processor, a 1.6GHz Exynos 4412 chipset which is the same one that is used in the Galaxy Note 2. Assuming that is the case, it has been speculated that this alleged 7.7” Samsung Galaxy Note device will not be competing against the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire at least in terms of price. Another model, the GT-N5110 has also been spotted, suggesting that the previous model could be a WiFi-only model, while the latter could feature mobile connectivity. No word on when we can expect to learn more but we’ll keep our eyes peeled anyway, so stay tuned for updates!

Beta Steam client for Linux to feature Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Serious Sam 3 BFE

The other day it was reported that Valve had launched an application page in which they were looking for beta testers for their Steam client for Linux. This is certainly great news for Linux gamers and at the same time we expect that they are also wondering what sort of games will the Steam client for Linux be getting. Well if you were successful with your application for the beta, developer Croteam has revealed that the beta Steam client for Linux will feature three games – Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Serious Sam 3 BFE. Oddly enough there was no mention of Left 4 Dead 2, which was the first game to be ported and optimized for Ubuntu systems, at least that’s what the original plan was. Perhaps Valve is still working on a port, but in the meantime beta participants can expect those three games for now.

What The iPad Mini’s Up Against: Asus Reports Nexus 7 Sales Approach 1 Million Per Month

(Fly or Die) Google Nexus 7

Asus CFO told The Wall Street Journal late Tuesday that the Nexus 7, Google’s well-received, affordable 7-inch Android tablet was nearing 1 million in sales per month, having picked up the pace considerably over the last month in particular. Chang noted that unit sales rose from roughly 500,000 around the time of its introduction in June/July, and rose steadily after that. Tablet sales for Asus beat analyst expectations, likely as a result of the Google-branded Nexus device, which got an update earlier this week in terms of base storage specs at both price points.

The Nexus 7 sales, which would seem to end up totalling somewhere around 3 million based on the figures Chang shared, might be the glimpse yet we’ve had at the current size of the small tablet market. It’s a stat that will prove important for those watching the tech industry going forward, as Apple’s iPad mini debuts this upcoming Friday, and following that we’ll likely get more info from Cupertino about how iPad mini sales have fared so far, if the company sticks with its usual pattern of release early sales figures post-launch.

The Nexus 7′s success might be the most concrete standard against which to compare its progress, as there’s precious little data out there about how others have done in the smaller tablet market. Amazon has been notoriously quiet about Kindle Fire sales thus far, noting recently that the iPad mini announcement “tripled” sales of the Fire HD, but not talking about specific sales volume. An estimate by Asymco’s Horace Dediu from the end of August put sales figures for the Kindle Fire’s first nine months on the market at around 5 million units, however.

On the Apple side, the company sold nearly 60 million iPads during its 2012 fiscal year. But that’s a different market, one that Apple forged itself. How the iPad mini performs remains a separate question, even though Apple on stage at its event last week framed this as essentially a way to replicate and continue that existing success. Still, the iPad mini goes on sale in many more countries with an ecosystem that’s much more globally available than its small tablet competition, so it’s fair to assume Apple will beat competitor device sales, but by how much remains a key question.

Regardless of how the competition fare, the Nexus 7 sales numbers are promising for both Asus and Google, in a market where any individual manufacturer’s Android-powered tablet hardware has had trouble gaining a decent foothold. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the Nexus 7 line picks up even more momentum now that Google has updated its base specs, and will soon add more software features, like user account switching, via Android 4.2.

Blizzard to offer new World of Warcraft mount and pet in their store

One of the great things about MMOs is that they are always being updated with new content. Now if you’re a World of Warcraft gamer and you’d like to get your hands on a special mount, or perhaps a pet, it seems that Blizzard has these two items that should be available either before or after the release of Patch 5.1. Now as some of you guys know, Blizzard has an online store in which gamers can purchase mounts and pets using real life money, and these two items – the Swift Wingsteed and the Cinder Kitten can be bought and their prices should be around the same as the other mounts/pets in the store.

Interestingly it seems that the Swift Wingsteed will come with a rather unique model of its own, and as you can see in the screenshot above, a cloud will be attached to its feet to give the illusion that the mount will be riding on a cloud. As expected it should be able to double up as a ground mount or a flying mount. It is pretty unique as far as mounts go, but we guess if anyone can buy it, it won’t be as special anymore.

Paper Computing technology the first step to paper-based Google Docs

At the University of Tokyo, the Naemura Group is developing paper computing technology, which can automatically erase, copy and print hand-drawn sketches on paper.
As well as using a camera and computer, this system uses a laser and UV light, making it possible to work directly with the hand-drawn sketches using the computer.
So for example, the user can leave only the edges of hand-written characters, creating 3D like text, or draw a figure by hand and color it in automatically.

Google research pane for Docs adds personal content, integration with Presentation and Drawing

Google research pane update adds personal content search from Docs, Picasa and Google

Building off of the web search capabilities of its research pane for Docs, Google is now giving users the ability to search for and insert their own personal content. For example, if you’re working on a presentation in Drive and want to add a photo from your Picasa album, or a quote from a friend’s Google+ profile, you’ll now have the option of adding personal content from within the research pane without leaving your project. This new search feature pulls information from your personal Picasa albums, Drive and Google+ accounts, and users will also find that the research pane has been extended to Presentation and Drawings. Unfortunately, Google Apps customers will still be limited to web-only search results, as personal content search is intended for individual accounts. However, if you’re a starving student heavily embedded in Google’s ecosystem, this time saver just might shave a few minutes off of your weekend cram session and that’s always a good thing.

Boxee TV Hits Walmart Stores Tomorrow

BoxeeTV-Television

Boxee has grown up. It was just a few short years ago that the NYC startup was simply hawking beta copies of its innovative media center software. Then came the D-Link-made Boxee Box, which sold in limited numbers through Best Buy and several online retailers. But now, with the Boxee TV, the startup has pulled off something special (or devilish depending on your view of the retailer) and managed to get the Boxee TV into Walmart.

The $99 device should be available in Walmart nationwide as soon as tomorrow. It will be supported by a large, in-store advertising campaign including a live demo endcaps and extra signage.

The Boxee TV is the company’s third product. It follows the path blazed by the Boxee Box, and while it features Netflix, Pandora and several other streaming apps, the Boxee TV focuses on live TV rather than streaming content like the ‘Box. For $99, the Boxee TV hits for the same price as the Apple TV and top-tier Roku but offers something unfathomable in its competitors: A live TV tuner and DVR without a storage limit.

The Boxee TV’s marque features is the so-called No Limits DVR. By utilizing Amazon’s cloud services, Boxee built a DVR without a storage limit. Users can record literally as much content was they want from OTA and basic cable. But there’s a catch: The No Limits DVR costs $14.99 a month and this feature is only available in a few markets at launch.

With the help of Wally World, the Boxee TV has a solid chance to being a legitimate hit. It’s priced right, has a lot more features than its competitors and will be featured in America’s biggest retailer during the holiday season. That’s a sure-fire formula for success.
