Allen West, Patrick Murphy Debate: No Apologies For A Nasty Campaign

WASHINGTON — Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) said he didn’t vote for a $716 billion cut to Medicare that he voted for. Democrat Patrick Murphy split from his party on where to draw the line on extending the Bush tax cuts. And neither apologized for fueling what has become one of the ugliest campaigns in the country.

After weeks of increasingly vitriolic ads, West and Murphy sat down on Friday night for their only formal debate in a race to represent Florida’s 18th Congressional District. There weren’t many fireworks during the hour-long exchange — West interrupted Murphy a few times, which Murphy pushed back on — but there seemed a palpable tension in the room the entire time.

Right out of the gate, West, a Tea Party favorite, was pressed on his reputation for stirring controversy. The moderator ticked off some of West’s past comments — he called members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus “communists,” said Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels would be proud of Democrats and said liberal women’s groups were “neutering” American men — and asked if his critics are correct that those remarks make him an ineffective congressman.

IVF And Birth Defects Could Be Linked, New Study Finds

In vitro fertilization is widely thought to be one of the great medical advances of the 20th century, helping women and couples have babies even if they struggle with infertility. But the procedure is not without risks.

New findings presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics‘ annual meeting in New Orleans on Saturday suggest that babies born through IVF, as well as other forms of assisted reproductive technology, have a slightly increased risk of birth defects, particularly those of the eye, heart, reproductive organs and urinary system.

“Couples should understand that the majority of infants born after assisted reproductive technology are perfectly healthy,” Dr. Lorraine Kelley-Quon, a general surgery resident at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and an author of the new study, told The Huffington Post. “The results of our study simply imply that couples considering [it] should talk with their doctor about the potential risks … so they can make an informed decision.”

Boys Entering Puberty Up To 2 Years Earlier, Study Says

Puberty is one of the biggest, and often most awkward, changes that boys go through, and a new study shows it starts six months to two years earlier than previous data indicated. The findings raise concerns about the cause of the change and how boys could be affected by a sped-up timeline.

“Our question was, ‘What’s actually going on currently?’ The data that was out there was old and of questionable validity,” said Dr. Richard Wasserman, an author of the study and director of Pediatric Research in Office Settings at the American Academy of Pediatrics. “My interest [as a doctor] is, ‘How do I know what’s normal for boys?'”

In recent years, studies have drawn attention to early-onset puberty in girls in the U.S., including a 2010 paper that found more girls begin breast development at age 7 or 8 than a decade earlier. But the new study, published online in the journal Pediatrics on Saturday, is among the first to look at the issue in American boys.

Microsoft begins updating Office RT to final version

Microsoft‘s Surface RT runs Windows apps, not regular Windows software. As such, it comes installed with a preview of the Office RT app, which is Office 2013 for the Surface. Originally, Microsoft said that the update taking Office RT from preview into its final version wouldn’t be released until November, but it seems they’re ahead of schedule.

The Office RT preview currently has a watermark that reads “preview” on the splash screen, and a gold rectangle in the window bar at the top of the screen that says the app is a preview edition. The update process has already started, comprised of a total of 528MB. This means those who receive their tablets on the 26th will already have the final version of Office RT, rather than having to wait a couple weeks.

Office RT is composed of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. According to Tech Radar, the differences between Office RT and Office 2013 are negligible, and users should have no trouble switching between the two. It’s important to note that this is for the desktop applications, however, and not the Metro apps, which are stripped down and feature far less functionality.

Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet is available for pre-order now, with the $499 model currently on a 3 week backorder. The device runs Windows RT, which is an ARM-optimized Windows operating system that cannot run standard windows software. An Intel-based version of the Surface is slated for release in a few months; it will run Windows 8.

Tesla’s Supercharger network goes live in six California towns, encourages EV road trips

DNP Tesla's Supercharger network goes live in six California towns, EV road trips get easier

Time to go on that great California road trip, Tesla owners; the EV maker has just launched new Superchargers in six Golden State locations: Folsom Premium Outlets, Harris Ranch in Coalinga, Gilroy Premium Outlets, Barstow, Tejon Ranch in Lebec and Hawthorne. They appear to be strategically placed to ease journeys between San Francisco, Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas, NV. The solar powered stations from SolarCity are designed just for Tesla vehicles, with Model S sedans being able to charge for free. According to Tesla, a Model S can be charged in about 30 minutes if you want to get around three hours of 60mph driving out of it, so you’ll have plenty of time to grab an In-N-Out Double Double on your way to Sin City.
