Microsoft has a lot to gloat about today, as it has announced that total Xbox 360 sales around the world have hit 70 million. That definitely isn’t anything to shake a stick at, considering that the original Xbox only managed to sell 25 million units in its lifespan. The Xbox 360 surpassed that number way back in 2008, and since then has been climbing steadily.
We’ve been hearing a lot about Xbox 360 sales lately. It’s been the top-selling console in the United States for many, many months in a row, a factoid that Microsoft isn’t willing to let us forget so easily. Eurogamer points out that these number put Microsoft firmly in second place, behind the Wii‘s 96.56 million sales (as of June 2012), and the PlayStation 3‘s 63.9 million sales (as of March 2012). Of course, both the Wii and the PS3 have sold many more units since those numbers were reported earlier this year, but it seems unlikely that the PS3 has caught up to the Xbox 360 between March and now.
1.7 million of those sales were made in Microsoft’s first quarter of fiscal 2013, the results of which were delivered last night. That’s down quite a bit year-over-year, as Microsoft managed to sell 2.3 million 360s in Q1 of its fiscal 2012. One interesting thing to note is that Microsoft’s research and development efforts were up a whopping 44% year-over-year to $140 million, which is essentially the best confirmation we can get of the Xbox 720′s development without Microsoft just outright saying it exists.
While Microsoft is basking in the glory of its Xbox 360 sales numbers, video game hardware sales have been down overall. Those will undoubtedly pick up a bit during the holiday shopping season, but whether or not they’ll drop off again once the new year arrives remains to be seen. Perhaps we need some new consoles to give the games industry a jump start again? Stay tuned.

Evidence of Google‘s upcoming 32GB Nexus 7 tablet has been scattered all over the place, with a snapshot of a Sam’s Club retail tag appearing earlier today. The leaked image shows an October 29th release date, as well as specs and a placeholder price. Now it seems someone was able to buy a 32GB Nexus 7 at his local Staples.
Over at The Verge, a reader sent in an image of the the 32GB Nexus 7 box, as well as a Staples receipt showing the product’s name and $249.99 price tag. According to the tipster, he called his local Staples in Kissimmee, Florida, and asked if they had any 32GB Nexus 7 tablets in stock. The had three available, so he went on over and bought one, simple as that.
Earlier this week, Google sent out invitations to an Android event that is scheduled on October 29th, which, according to the leaked Sam’s Club image, is when the 32GB Nexus 7 will be available for purchase. As we said earlier today, an internal Staples document discovered by Android Police shows that, after announcing the 32GB Nexus 7 on the 29th, it will phase out the 8GB model. Rumor has it the 16GB model will be priced at $199.99.
Of course, this isn’t the first 32GB Nexus 7 to be shipped. Last week, a Japanese Google customer ordered the 16GB Nexus model, but was sent the 32GB model by mistake. If you’re hoping to get your hands on the 32GB model, call up your local Staples and ask if they have any. According to The Verge’s tipster, the 32GB Nexus 7 offers 28GB of available storage space, and runs Android 4.1.1.

Motorola lists phones that won’t get Jelly Bean, offers $100 credit to buy a phone that will
Posted in: Today's Chili Back in September, Motorola Mobility announced that some of its handsets from 2011 and later wouldn’t be making the jump to Jelly Bean. In an effort to smooth things over with exiled customers, the company pledged that it would offer a $100 rebate to those who trade up to a select Motorola smartphone. Today, the Google-owned Android maker has released a list detailing which phones qualify for this promotion. If you’re among the many who purchased a Droid 3, Droid X2 and Photon 4G, it looks like an official update to Android 4.1 is out of the question. It should be noted that this offer doesn’t affect your wireless contract’s terms and conditions (read: ETF may still apply). However, if you’re just aching to pick up a Motorola phone that released in 2012, then why not score a $100 credit for your troubles? Move past the break to see which other devices made didn’t make the cut.

Welcome to Friday evening, everyone. We’re about ready to kick off the weekend, but before we do, let’s recap the news from the afternoon. Today we heard that the iPad Mini might mean the end of the iPad 2, and that a jailbreak for the iPhone 5 will coming shortly. We learned today that T-Mobile will be holding a product event on October 29 – the same day that Google and Microsoft are holding events – and that the prices of the rumored Mac Mini and iMac refreshes might be staying the same.
We had a few Nexus-related stories hit this afternoon, with a new Nexus 4 leak giving us some details on the phone’s specs, and an internal Staples document telling us that the 32GB Nexus 7 model right be replacing the 8GB variant. The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga will be launching in Japan as the NEC LaVie Y, and one expert is telling us today that there aren’t many visual differences between smartphone displays in 720p and 1080p.
Stanford Ovshinsky, who created the NiMH battery and helped developed many other products, passed away earlier this week, and YouTube launched Campaigns today, a feature that’s being called a “digital thermometer” for non-profits. Pricing for the rumored 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display could top $1,700, while the Skifta app for Android has been updated with support for Instagram and Dropbox. Moog unveiled its new LEV-96 “sensoriactuator” today, and we got word that T-Mobile is now requiring users to sign up for at least a 2GB data plan when taking home a new smartphone.
Microsoft unleashed the launch trailer for Halo 4 today, while EA CEO John Riccitiello was seen saying that social gaming isn’t dying. One unlucky Nintendo counterfeiter is likely headed to the slammer, Motorola has delivered a list of phones that won’t be getting an upgrade to Jelly Bean, and Rovio released a new teaser trailer for Angry Birds Star Wars today. Finally tonight, we have a new column from Don Reisinger for you to read through, in which he asks “How many tablets do you really need?” That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you have an excellent weekend!

Motorola‘s Droid Bionic is (finally) slated to receive an update to Ice Cream Sandwich, which will be available on October 19th. This comes when many other cell phones are offering users upgrades from ICS to Jelly Bean. The majority of the Android-using world is still using Gingerbread, however, so Bionic users who upgrade will still be a bit ahead of the general curve.
By upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich, Bionic users will get a variety of new features, including the customizable launch bar, Face Unlock, simplified multitasking, improved notifications, and Motorola’s SmartAction app. ICS users will have Direct Access Lock, which lets the users skip directly to either the camera, messages, texts, or unlock. In addition, users will be able to create folders by drag and dropping apps on top of each other.
The Droid Bionic features a 4.3 inch qHD TFT display with a resolution of 960×540, as well as a Gorilla Glass overlay to help protect the screen. The Bionic has both a microUSB and micro HDMI port, as well as a standard 3.5mm headphone port. Its wireless tech includes LTE, EVDO Rev.A, b/g/n Wifi, and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.
Some of this smartphone’s best features includes its 8MP camera with autofocus and an LED flash, which can record in full HD 1080p, as well as its dual-core 1GHz processor. The Bionic was released in 2011. According to the Verizon Facebook page, it will receive a Jelly Bean update “in the coming months.”

There’s nothing worse than being so excited to eat your food or sip your coffee that you burn the inside of your mouth. Up until now, the best relief came from a little milk, but that doesn’t last long, and does nothing to help heal the burn either. Now, scientists have come up with a patch you can place directly on the burnt area of your mouth to help cool it off.

The dissolving oral strip can also help protect the burn so it heals faster. While at the University of Texas Austin, researcher Jason McConville helped develop the non-toxic strip, which looks similar to those breath strips you can buy today. But instead of breath fresheners, the strip contains a local anesthetic (benzocaine) along with a “therapeutic polymer” to aid the healing process. Unlike breath strips, the burn strip will actually adhere to the injured area, and gradually dissolve over time.
McConville, who is now at the University of New Mexico, plans on seeing if there’s a way to develop a strip that could last 2 or 3 days for really severe burns – like that time I was so excited for my pizza that I scorched the roof of my mouth and it stung for days. You know the feeling.
The current prototype strips are mango flavored, but the next step in the process of bringing the strips to market will be human experiments and potentially creating more flavors. Hopefully, we’ll begin to see the strips in mass-production in the near future if all goes well.
