Words with Friends and Draw Something Board Games: Gameception

That’s right folks, after conquering social networks and mobile devices, Zynga has wrenched open a portal to the physical realm. Midgard. Middle Earth. Or just plain Earth. The company partnered with Hasbro to release board game versions of their video games that were based on board games in the first place.

words with friends board game

Yes, that is a thing that exists: Words with Friends, the board game. In fact it comes in three editions, all of which have 104 tiles and a 15 x 15 board. Clearly a massive difference from Scrabble, which only has 100 tiles. The scoring and bonuses are the same as the one in the online game, except this time it has an offline single player mode.

Then there’s the Draw Something board game, which to its credit is slightly distinguishable from Pictionary. The Draw Something board game has players guessing each other drawings to get coins; first to 15 get coins wins. Note that Hasbro also holds the rights to Pictionary and to Scrabble (at least in U.S. and Canada, Mattel has it trademarked for the rest of the world). So call them weird – which they are! – but they’re not stepping on anyone’s toes here.

You can order these games either from Amazon or from Hasbro’s online shop for $15-$40 (USD) depending on the game. There’s also a FarmVille board game, but it’s a clone of Hungry Hungry Hippos. That’s just lazy. The Words with Friends board games on the other hand? I don’t care what the world’s craziest indie developer can come up with. These are hands-down 2012′s weirdest board games for me.

“…I’m Making Waaaaaffles”

What a classic line from Shrek. And what a great treat. Seriously, waffles have to be one of the most diverse breakfast foods. Think of all the things you can put on them: fresh fruit, syrup-y fruit, whipped cream, butter, maple syrup, nuts, icing, powdered sugar. Yuuuummmmm. But they tend to not be the easiest to eat if you don’t have the time to sit down. Until now.

Nostalgia Electrics decided that waffles can be served in more than one way. Though it looks like an average waffle maker their 2-in-1 Breakfast Treats Maker has 5 separate ‘compartments’. So you can bake up to five waffle fries at once. Or change out the nonstick cooking plates and make 5 French toast fries. You can make pancake fries too. If you are sitting at the table, kids and adults can more easily eat and taste a variety of toppings or dips with the smaller fry size. And the truly fun addition to this kitchen gadget is the 25 bamboo skewers. Stick a skewer in your concoction and make breakfast to go. Whatever your fancy, for $37.66 on Amazon.com it makes a nice addition to any kitchen looking for a unique take on a classic morning delicacy.

Skifta app adds Instagram and Dropbox for home network streaming

The app known as Skifta is one that allows you to instantly take command of the contents of every wi-fi connected device in your home with your Android device – and soon it’ll be working with Dropbox and Instagram too. This app is one which we’ve had a brief look at in the past, and with the undeniable ease and quickness with which we were able to get up and running, there should be no doubt in the amount of greatness that’s about to be unleashed with integration with the cloud-based archives at Dropbox and Instagram. This update will take place on the 23rd of October and will join an ever-growing set of channels that also work with the system.

This update adds Dropbox and Instagram to Revision 3, Rdio, Facebook Photos, Flickr, TED Talks, SoundCloud, and a handful of other hot cloud-based apps. You can start the app up, drop in a couple passwords, connect to your networks, and you’re off and running. Connect to a source, connect to a destination, and your Android smart device does all the commanding.

Photo galleries and movies work best, but you’re always welcome to open up a lovely set of music files and sounds too. This update will continue the expansion of the 3rd party groups that Skifta will be working with in the future, too – so stay tuned for more of your favorites soon. This app is able to connect with not just these cloud services and your computers and TVs, but data centers and game consoles as well – not to mention stereos.

You can download Skifta for your PC or Android device right this minute, with streaming to DLNA and UPnP devices working right out of the box. Never before has there been such a simple setup, that you can bet. Have a peek at some hands-on screenshots below to see if this simplicity clicks for you, too.

Horrid Airport X-Ray Body Scanners Are Finally Being Replaced

The maybe useless and definitely invasive X-ray body scanners at major airports across the country are being replaced with new models that don’t blast you with a bomb of radiation. Coincidentally, the new scanners won’t allow the TSA to see your junk anymore, too. More »

Halo 4 launch trailer “Scanned” released with big names attached

Halo 4‘s launch date is nearly upon us (just over two weeks to go!), and today Microsoft is doing its part to up the anticipation. The company has released the launch trailer for Halo 4, dubbed “Scanned,” and we have to say that we’re pretty impressed with it. That might be because the trailer has a couple of big names in filmmaking attached to it.

David Fincher, the man who gave us the films Fight Club and Se7en, served as producer on this two-minute trailer, while Tim Miller, who’s name is attached to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, directed it. That team-up appears to be a match made in heaven for Microsoft, as Scanned is one hell of launch trailer. Don’t just take our word for it, though – check it out below.

The trailer centers around Master Chief and a brand new enemy who has not only captured the Spartan, but is in the process of scanning his memory in search of the Chief’s weakness when the trailer picks up. Through this thought-scanning process, we get a taste of Master Chief’s backstory, going all the way back to when he was just a boy. Then we get to see his transition from mere man to Spartan super soldier which, needless to say, looks like a pretty painful process.

Halo 4 launches for the Xbox 360 on November 6, and will be the first Halo game made from the ground up by 343 Industries, the studio Microsoft created to continue the Halo franchise after it was Bungie’s for ten years. Plenty of fans are worried that Halo 4 is going to disappoint, while others are optimistic that 343 will be able to make a Halo title that’s worthy of standing among the other games in the franchise. We’ll find out if Halo 4 sinks or swims soon enough!

T-Mobile schedules new product event on October 29th

TMobile holding new product launch October 29th

T-Mobile has just sent out invites to the press for a product launch event on the evening of October 29th. We weren’t given any clues as to what this new item (or items) could be — aside from the fact that it will include T-Mobile’s full fall lineup — but we certainly have a few suspicions considering the timing of such an event. Microsoft and Google are both holding press events earlier in the day, after all, which means we’re either going to be treated to T-Mobile’s Windows Phone 8 lineup or (this is less likely, but anything’s possible) a T-Mobile Nexus. Feel free to put your wagers in the comments below, and we’ll work to sort out the craziness that will most certainly ensue that day.

Moog unveils LEV-96 sensoriactuator concept for acoustic guitars

Moog, the company that pioneered commercial manufacturing of analog synthesizers, has shown off a cool new piece of tech. They call it the LEV-96, and it’s a new “sensoriactuator” prototype that “activates and controls naturally occurring harmonics and resonant frequencies on any medium.” Images posted by Moog show the concept device being used on an acoustic guitar.

The LEV-96 places two pickups under each string, which totals 12 pickups. The company says that each “pickup channel is capable of controlling any combination of 8 harmonics within each string simultaneously.” So, in this case, there are a total of 96 individual control systems handling up to 96 harmonics.

The whole system is powered by a processor and is controlled through touch-based sliders by the guitar player. This allows adjustments of intensity, harmonics, and note duration. There’s also other settings that allow you to change the arpeggio, tremolo, and other random harmonics. During playing, the system constantly evaluates “each string’s harmonic content and vibrational behavior.”

Sadly, Moog has only released photos of the device, so we don’t know what this thing sounds like, nor do we get to see it in action. However, the company’s annual Moogfest is coming up, so we’ll possibly be able to finally the see thing work its magic. However, Moog says that it’s only a rough concept so far and that there will be a lot more to come in the future.
