LG Nexus 4 (E960) announcement this October 29th?

Word on the street has it that Google’s Android-themed event that is happening in New York City this coming October 29th would also be the platform where the LG Nexus 4 (E960) is announced officially, making it the first of the next generation Nexus branded devices to be revealed to the world. Of course, this remains speculation at time of publishing, but you can more or less say that the planets have been aligned in the right manner with previous rumors circulating around concerning a Google-LG Nexus-branded device.

What you see above hails from evleaks, who did predict the new Lumia devices rather accurately, so we would not be surprised if the LG Nexus 4 did indeed come with a 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 processor, a 4.7″ display at 1280 x 768 resolution, 2GB RAM,16GB of internal memory, an 8-megapixel shooter at the back with a 1.3-megapixel camera in front, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a 2100mAh battery, all crammed into a body that measures 9.1mm thin.

Windows Phone 8 launch event invites sent for October 29 with Nokia as hero

If you’re ready for Windows Phone 8, Microsoft hears you – with an event scheduled for the 29th of October and set to show off Nokia as their brand hero right up front and center. If this doesn’t calm your mind on how Microsoft will be pushing the mobile OS, nothing will – there’s no Surface smartphone in the mix (yet, of course.) What we’ll be seeing here is several sizes of tiles, a lovely new set of integrations with Windows 8, and perhaps a few new bits of hardware as well.

This event will play host to Windows Phone 8 and many of its integrated launch-day services including Xbox Music for battle with Spotify and iTunes. We may see the elusive Verizon Nokia Lumia 822 (aka the Atlas. We’ll definitely going to see more of that “fundamental shift” that Steve Ballmer was talking about. We’ll definitely get a Windows Phone 8 pre-order date if we don’t have it by then.

We’ll hopefully just be seeing a few HTC devices including the Windows Phone 8X and the 8X as well. The 8X will be one to watch, for sure.

The folks at ZTE MIGHT have a Windows Phone 8 device at the event – though that’s unlikely. The devices we’ll certainly be seeing are the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Nokia Lumia 820, both of them ready for action right the heck after the event, we should hope. We’ll be there with bells on, you can bet -stick around!

ThinkGeek 8-bitty Mobile Gaming Controller Finally Ships

The first time we talked about the 8-bitty controller for your mobile gaming device was back in February. Yeah, we never thought it would ship either. If you’ve been waiting for that little old school Nintendo-style controller to finally ship, today is the day. As of right now you can hop over to ThinkGeek and pick one up for yourself for about 30 bucks.

icade 8 bitty gamepad from thinkgeek 2

The 8-bitty is a small handheld controller powered by a pair of AAA batteries. It uses Bluetooth to connect to a number of different portable devices on the market today including iOS as well as Android tablets and smartphones. The controller has eight buttons total including four buttons on the face, a select button, start button, and a pair shoulder buttons.

It also has a D-pad for controlling movement. The controller was developed using an open platform with no licensing fees or permissions needed to create apps that support it. ThinkGeek says that it is fully compatible with the Atari Greatest Hits iPad app, and any of the over 150 other games with iCADE support.

Ant Ballet directed by a human

If you think that you have had enough of Swan Lake after watching numerous performances in the theater, perhaps it is time to expand your horizons and see a ballet performed by non-humans. In fact, the “folks” on “stage” would come with an extra pair of limbs compared to us humans. I am referring to the Ant Ballet by designer Ollie Palmer who hails from the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, where this research project will reproduce the pheromones that ants use to communicate in order to have them shake their booty, so to speak.

This particular research project into paranoia, control systems, insects, and architecture, is split into four different phases, where Palmer did conduct thorough research into Linepthinema humile Argentine ants while using a robotic arm to dispense powder trails of synthesized pheromones (Z9:16 Ald Hexadecenal), resulting in the ants to move around in a way that is different from one’s natural foraging behavior. Next up, will we be able to see somersaulting ants so that there is an insect rendition of Cirque du Soleil?

Surface tablet supports Xbox 360 controllers

Microsoft’s upcoming Surface tablet might have experienced a sold out status in the US for its pre-orders, and we are not surprised to hear that considering how this tablet might just nudge its way into the tablet scene to turn what is currently a two horse race into a three horse race. Since all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, we are not surprised to hear that the Surface tablet too, will be able to support Xbox 360 controllers with the possibility of playing nice with the Kinect peripheral as well.

This bit of information was revealed at a recent “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit which was moderated by Surface general manager Panos Panay, and when faced with the question, “Does the Surface support Kinect and/or 360 usb controller inputs?”, Panay replied, “We used the 360 USB controllers to play with Surface all the time and they work great. We have not tried Kinect yet.” This definitely does sound promising, and there had best be great FPS titles on the Surface for us to make full use of the Xbox 360 controllers.

Google Maps increases new building footprints by 25 million

Google must have felt hurt with Apple rolling out their very own Maps app on the iOS 6 platform, ditching the traditional Google Maps solution along the way. Although Apple’s Maps app is far from perfect and still has plenty of work to be done for it to be remotely useful to the end user, Google is all too wary of the possibility that they remain complacent, hence the latest update to Google Maps saw an additional 25 million building footprints being thrown into the database for an even more detailed and comprehensive navigational experience.

The new building footprints were said to have been created by a computer, and this very same computer processed actual aerial imagery as well as rendered the shapes of buildings in the maps itself. User contributions are very much welcome as well, where they can help out by fixing inaccurate building footprints in Google Map Maker, in addition to assigning businesses to current buildings.Heck, one can even draw up the whole building footprints themselves. Would you contribute to Google Maps in your very own way?

LG’s Rumored Nexus 4 Gets Caught On Film Again, Ahead Of Potential October 29 Unveiling

nexus4ev

Considering the sheer volume of leaks and information floating around right now, it’s becoming more and more clear that the so-called LG Nexus 4 is the real deal. In case you didn’t already have enough to ponder though, the folks behind the infamous @evleaks Twitter account have gotten their hands on yet another photo of the unreleased device and a few new particulars about its size and weight.

But first, the photo. In fairness, it’s far from the best Nexus 4 image I’ve seen out there — that distinction goes to the rather artsy photoset shot (see below) by TechOnliner.ru — but it matches up nicely with earlier leaks. Speaking of matching up, the device’s purported spec sheet (quad-core 1.5GHz APQ8064 chipset, 8-megapixel rear camera, 2GB of RAM, and a 4.7-inch display running at 1280×768) is pretty much a direct translation of the components found in LG’s flagship Optimus G smartphone, again keeping with people’s prevailing notions about the device.

As has been pointed out more than a few times since the first Nexus 4 photos leaked, the device bears a striking resemblance to Samsung’s older Galaxy Nexus. Should @evleaks’ info hold true though, LG’s device will be just a hair heftier than its Nexus predecessor: it weighs in at 139g and sports a 9.1mm waistline.

Naturally, neither LG or Google are willing to confirm the device’s existence just yet (hopefully someone in the process goofs the way printer RR Donnelly did the other day), but that could all change very shortly. Google has already sent out invitations to an Android event on October 29 that joyfully declares “the playground is open” — coupled with earlier reports that the next Nexus device (or devices; playgrounds can be pretty boring if you’re by yourself) would be unveiled before the end of October, it seems like Google is gearing up to steal Microsoft’s thunder with some hardware announcements of its own.

Metapaper wallpaper prevents Wi-Fi theft

Wi-FiYou know what they say – a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and in the modern day where Wi-Fi networks are just about anywhere and everywhere, there will always be some smart aleck out there who cannot resist the temptation of hacking into a Wi-Fi network just because he or she can. If your neighbor is far more tech savvy than you and has been stealing your Wi-Fi all this while, here is one way of preventing that from happening – get a new set of wallpaper for your home.

A new what?! Yes sir, a new set of wallpaper from French researchers, who have called it Metapaper. Metapaper basically blocks Wi-Fi signals from escaping the home, which not only beautifies your abode, but it also increases the amount of wireless security. While blocking Wi-Fi signals, it will still enable TV and radio waves to pass through. Expect Finnish company Alstrom to distribute Metapaper from 2013 onwards. For those who are paranoid androids, Metapaper is the way to go, although we do hope that they have got some nifty designs to appeal to the masses. Alternatively, you can always use a wired connection and turn off Wi-Fi, but where’s the fun in that?
