No Sony Jelly Bean until 2013; Pre-2012 Xperia out of luck

Sony’s official Jelly Bean update for its Android smartphones won’t start rolling out until early 2013, the company has admitted, while users of pre-2012 devices can pretty much discount any hope of an upgrade. The Xperia T, Xperia TX, and Xperia V will be first in line, with an update to Android 4.1 coming “from mid-Q1 2013″ and then followed by other 2012 models. However, 2011 Xperia devices won’t get official Jelly Bean at all, Sony says.

“We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich” Sony writes on its official blog. As usual, the excuse is one of subpar performance with newer versions of Google’s platform.

“Beyond Ice Cream Sandwich we would not able to guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience you expect and we demand” Sony argues. “We will however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.”

Those with a global versions of the Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia P, Xperia go, or Xperia J can expect Jelly Bean sometime in the new year, though Sony says we’ll have to wait for “detailed timings.”

Unsurprisingly, owners of Sony Android phones not in line for an official update aren’t especially pleased with the company’s decision, and the comments over at the official blog are swiftly filling up with complaints. Adding to the fracas is the fact that several third-party Android 4.1 ROMs exist that work perfectly well on the 2011 Xperia devices, and which are being held up as evidence that Sony is thinking more about avoiding work than it is “user experience.”

Sony to start Xperia upgrades to Jelly Bean by mid-Q1, rules out all 2011 phones

Sony Xperia T review close-up

We’ve got mixed news for those who were wondering just where Sony’s Jelly Bean updates were headed. The good? Sony has narrowed down its upgrade schedule for the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V to the middle of 2013’s first quarter, or roughly February. Just about every other reasonably capable 2012 model is also getting an upgrade once Sony has narrowed down the timetable, ranging from the Xperia S through to the Xperia ion and Xperia go. Brace yourself for the dark side of the news, however: not a single 2011 Xperia phone will make the Jelly Bean leap, no matter how quick or recent it might be. The company was “not able to guarantee” the experience the devices would have with the newer OS, we’re told. While we know that some older phones would have been borderline at best, that cutoff won’t be pleasant for anyone whose Xperia Arc S is already out of the Android upgrade loop after less than a year.

The Pokeymans Project: Hilarious Drawings of Pokémon Based Solely on their Descriptions

I have a confession: The first time I played Pokémon on my DS was last year. I don’t know why it took me so long to give the game a shot, but needless to say, I was hooked. I finally understood why it has this huge appeal with kids and with adults who are kids at heart.

If I hadn’t played the game sooner and come to know which pocket monster was which, I would probably end up like Noelle Stevenson, who’s behind The Pokeymans Project. Noelle knew little, if not, close to nothing, about Pokémon. So she decided to take requests to draw these critters up, only based on the descriptions that people sent in.

Pokeymans

For example, from the above description, Noelle drew the Absol you see below. Needless to say, the results are hilarious.

Check out the gallery below for more of Noelle’s drawings in the gallery below, and find more over at The Pokeymans Project.

Arctic Force Snowball Crossbow

For those of us living in the northern hemisphere, there is just one phrase which is very relevant at the moment – “Brace yourself, winter is coming.” Having said that, don’t be a bummer and stay cooped up at home all winter long just because you hate the snow. Embrace snow just like how you embrace the sunlight during summer, and perhaps you might learn to live a little bit more. How about having a snowball fight with your kids, when was the last time you did so? Assuming you and the missus have teamed up to go up against two of your terrible teens, you might want to offset the lack of agility on your part with power – without telling your kids, of course, by purchasing the £29.99 Arctic Force Snowball Crossbow.

What was once a medieval weapon of choice, the crossbow is definitely a timeless classic that has also been seen in use in The Walking Dead to pick off zombies from afar. The serious ‘pull-and-release’ action on the Arctic Force Snowball Crossbow will be able to launch snowballs up to 18 meters away, now how about that? You can always practice by using the included vinyl target first, before you end up shooting like a pro.

Time lapse video shows space shuttle Endeavour’s final mission

We’ve been covering the space shuttle Endeavour as it has made its way from NASA’s ownership to its final resting place in California for the public to view. The space shuttle made a number of flyovers in the California area and other places on its way to the Los Angeles airport. Once at LAX, the spacecraft was transferred from its piggyback partner aircraft to a gigantic robotic hauler for a trip through the streets of Los Angeles.

The trip through the streets of Los Angeles took two days to go 12 miles. Along the way, thousands of people came out to see the Endeavour on its final mission, and the space shuttle stopped several times for various performances. The spacecraft has traveled over 25,000,000 miles since its first mission in 1986.

Its final mission to carry it to the California Science Center is Mission 26. A cinematographer named Matthew Givot was one of the thousands that lined up to watch the space shuttle make its final journey. Givot and his team took a huge number of photographs and then put them together in a time lapse video to chronicle the journey from LAX to its final resting spot at the California Science Center.

The video spans 2 minutes and 44 seconds. It’s amazing to see the massive space shuttle make its way down city streets. Check out the video below and watch history unfold.

JailbreakMe hacker Comex let go by Apple after failing to respond to offer letter

JailbreakMe hacker Comex let go at Apple after failing to respond to offer letter

After developing JailBreakMe, cracking such devices as the iPad 2 or iPhone 4 and finally scoring a paying intern gig with his nemesis, hacker Comex tweeted that he’s no longer working at Apple. Also known as Nicholas Allegra, the talented coder’s Cupertino situation apparently came asunder when he failed to respond to an email offer to re-up with the company, though he also told Forbes that the situation was more complicated than that. He added that “it wasn’t a bad ending,” and that he has fond memories of his Apple experience, but if you’re hoping the Brown University student will have an iOS 6 jailbreak soon, don’t hold your breath — he’s concentrating strictly on his studies, for now.

Rockstar launches official Grand Theft Auto 5 Facebook page

Whether Rockstar’s highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 5 will see a release before March 2013 remains to be seen, but for those who can’t wait to get their hands on the game, Rockstar has since launched the official Grand Theft Auto 5 Facebook page. At the moment the page is kind of barren, although we expect that updates regarding the game’s status, screenshots, announcements and the like will populate the page in due time. However according to Just Push Start, it seems that the Game Informer magazine will be revealing more about Grand Theft Auto 5 in their next issue, which had them speculating that perhaps Rockstar could be close to finishing the game and will have some new material in which they can share with their fans. In any case we’ll keep our eyes and ears peeled, so do check back with us from time to time for updates on the game, or you can head on over to the official Grand Theft Auto 5 Facebook where Rockstar will hopefully have some material to share soon.

Halo 4 live action launch trailer directed by David Fincher leaves us wanting more

David Fincher’s directed Fight Club has something of a cult following, although I may have broken rules number one and two for talking about it! Anyway if you liked what David Fincher did for Fight Club (amongst his other works), you might be interested to learn that Fincher was also responsible for directing the latest Halo 4 launch trailer, which is a live action one, that gives the viewer a little bit of background information on Master Chief. It’s dark (not surprising from Fincher), painful, kind of scary but incredibly epic! Oh and did we mention that it looks awesome? In any case it certainly does a pretty good job of whetting the appetite of gamers (yours truly being one of them), so if you have a couple of minutes to spare, check it out in the video above. Halo 4 is expected to see a release on the Xbox 360 come 6th of November with pre-orders available from the Microsoft Store.

Fujitsu Esprimo X913-T multitouch Windows 8 AIO packs ultrasonics

Fujitsu’s Windows 8 touchscreen strategy isn’t solely centered on tablets; the company also has a 23-inch all-in-one PC, the Esprimo X913-T, which uses ultrasonics to figure out if you’re paying attention. The desktop offers Intel Core i3-3220T or Core i5-3470T processors and up to 16GB of memory, as well as a 1920 x 1080 display with 10-point multitouch for navigating through Windows 8′s Live Tile UI.

Storage is courtesy of up to a 750GB 5,400rpm HDD, or alternatively a 320GB 7,200rpm drive or 128GB SSD, with Intel HD graphics. Connectivity includes audio in, audio out, four USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, DVI, and gigabit ethernet, with WiFi an option along with a webcam and microphones.

As for the ultrasonics, Fujitsu has equipped the Esprimo X913-T with a sensor that uses reflected soundwaves to figure out if there’s someone in front of the screen. Then, like Samsung Smart Stay on the Galaxy S III, the display stays active even if nobody touches the keyboard, mouse, or touchscreen, but automatically locks when the user moves away. Facial recognition with the webcam can speed up the unlocking process too.

The 23-inch display is posable, and can be laid completely flat for those times you want to pretend you have a SUR40 multitouch table. No word on pricing at this stage, but Fujitsu says the Esprimo X913-T will go on sale from Windows 8′s launch next week.
