Jelly Bean update hits for BBC iPlayer

If you’re a fan of BBC programming and use an Android smartphone you will be glad to hear that BBC has offered up the new version of its iPlayer app. The new version of the app makes it compatible with the features of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The updated app also brings with it some other nice and interesting features that fans of the app will appreciate.

The update improves the quality video playback and now supports streaming over Wi-Fi or 3G networks. The BBC is quiet on the topic of what exactly it did to improve the playback quality using its new app. We do know that the updated version of the app is based on the updated version of BBC’s Media Player that is also available.

If you’ve never used the BBC iPlayer app before, it allows TV and radio shows from the last seven days to be played if you missed an episode of your favorite show. The app also supports playback of live content so if you’re out of the house when your favorite program is on, you can watch it on your Android smartphone or tablet.

The app allows you to flag shows that you like and offers a programming guide allowing you to figure out what you want watch in the future. The app is available on Google Play right now, and you’ll also have to download the BBC Media Player app. Thankfully, both of those programs are offered at no cost.

Etihad Stadium in Australia launches QkR app that lets spectators order beer and have it delivered to them

So you’re watching a game in the stadium live – it’s filled with the sound of fans cheering, the opposition booing and it’s the most exciting game you’ve ever seen. At the same time you think that this experience could be enhanced further if you had a nice cold beer, but getting up to go buy one means possibly missing out on several minutes of the game. Well the good news for Australians is that the Etihad Stadium will be trialing a new service in which spectators at the stadium can order a beer from their seats and have it delivered to them, thus ensuring that they’ll never miss a minute of the game.

This is done via an app called QkR that lets spectators browse a menu filled with food and drink. Once an order has been placed, the user can then pay for it via credit card. We’re pretty sure that this isn’t a brand new concept, but as far as Australians are concerned, this is a new one for them. In any case this service is being trialed tonight during a soccer match between Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United where 1,000 fans will be given the chance to try this new system out. Needless to say if successful, it will be rolled out stadium wide. If any of our Australian readers get to try this out, let us know in the comments about your experience with it!

The Bräuler Modular Growler System helps ensure your beer stays fresh and crisp by injecting CO2 into it

As much as we’d love for our beers to remain bubbly and frosty, that unfortunately is not the case and as many slow drinkers have realized, a flat and warm beer is not a very pleasant thing to drink. The folks at The Zythos Team have come up with something to ensure that if you ever needed to take your beer home with you from the pub, or while on the go, the Bräuler Modular Growler System is the system that will ensure your beer stay fresh and crisp for long periods of time. As the name suggests, this is a modular growler system and has been made out of stainless steel and has been designed to look pretty classy.

It even comes with what the team is calling the “FreshCap”, which is basically a cap in which carbon dioxide can be injected into the growler in order to keep your beer bubbly. However the FreshCap is a Kicsktarter project at the moment, although it has since long surpassed its goal of $5,000. For those interested in getting their hands on one, a pledge of $50 will nab you the FreshCap once it has been launched, while a pledge of $100 will get you the growler and a FreshCap. More details about the project can be found on its Kickstarter page.

AT&T releases statement regarding Softbank-Sprint deal

When AT&T and T-Mobile announced their decision to merge last year, Sprint was the most vocal and opposed the idea. Well now that Sprint has a deal of their own – Softbank will be buying a 70% majority stake in Sprint – it seems that it’s payback time and AT&T has stepped forward and voiced their opinion on the matter. Granted it was carefully worded, it can be summed up by saying that AT&T thinks that this deal should not be allowed to take place. In a statement released by AT&T’s vice president, Brad Burns: (more…)

The TK Justice Blackberry 10 concept is something we can get on board with

As far as Blackberry 10 handsets are concerned, we know that RIM has at least one handset that will feature a physical QWERTY keyboard. Given that their physical keyboards on Blackberry phones were what made the handset so popular (amongst other things), we guess RIM is hoping to keep tradition alive for Blackberry 10. While we have yet to see the final look of RIM’s Blackberry 10 handset with a physical keyboard, the DigitalHomeBoy has come up with a concept rendering of what he thinks RIM’s Blackberry 10 handset should look like with a keyboard.

Dubbed the TK Justice, this is a follow up to his previous work, the TK Victory with the main difference being that this will run on Blackberry 10. It appears to be very sleek and has taken the keyboard design from the Bold 9900, which we have to admit was a pretty decent keyboard to type on. However instead of following the Bold 9900 with a silver border, the TK Justice has gone with a matte black border which is somewhat reminiscent of the iPhone 5. It is also taller when compared to the Bold 9900, giving the user more touchscreen real estate to work with which we guess is a good thing. You can check out the rest of the photos on DigitalHomeBoy’s website, but in the meantime what do you guys think? Is the TK Justice a Blackberry 10 handset you’d love to get your hands on? We know we would!

Blizzard details upcoming UI changes in Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm

While a game might have awesome gameplay, having a clunky user interface can ruin the experience to a certain extent. That being said, Blizzard has unveiled and detailed several user interface changes that will be made in the upcoming Starcraft 2 expansion, Heart of the Swarm. Some of these changes have been introduced in patch 1.5, but as for the rest, Blizzard felt that they needed more time to work on them. The good news is that the rest of the changes is expected to be introduced with the next major Heart of the Swarm beta patch, so if you’d like to see what are the changes that Blizzard will be making to the user interface for the upcoming expansion, head on over to the Starcraft 2 blog in the source link below for the details. Do you like what you see so far?

Photo taken by the Nexus 10 spotted on Picasa

Word on the street is that Google might have a 10” Nexus tablet in the works, but since nothing has been confirmed, we guess taking that news with a grain of salt was the best course of action. Well it looks like more evidence has surfaced suggesting that such a device exists, and this is thanks to a photo posted on Picasa. According to the photo’s EXIF data, it revealed that it was taken by a device called the Nexus 10. This seems to be in line with the way Google has been naming their products these days (i.e. Nexus 7 and the rumored Nexus 4).

Unfortunately apart from the photo and the name of the device and resolution of the image (2560×1920), not much else is known but we guess this could very well be one of the early evidence that shows that such a device could be real and in the making. For those who aren’t familiar with the Nexus 10 rumor, it was suggested not too long ago that Google could be going after Apple’s iPad with a 10” device of their own, and that it will be made by Samsung. The rumored specs include a 10” 2560×1600 display and will be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 5250 dual-core processor. We’re not sure if Google will unveil the Nexus 10 at their event on the 29th of October, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled nonetheless.

Skylanders Giants hits stores on October 21

Last Christmas my son was bonkers for the Skylanders game. I played the game with him on more than a few occasions, and it was really cool. I particularly liked how you could take a little statue figurines of the characters, place them on this round device that plugs into the game console, and the statue would turn into the character on the screen to use in the game. The game turned out to be impressively popular, and the sequel to the original game is set to launch this weekend.

The sequel is called Skylanders Giants, and it will be available in stores on October 21, which is Sunday. The game will be available for the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Xbox 360, and the PS3. The game has 16 new characters including eight Giant Skylanders that are twice the size of the normal characters.

Each of those giant characters has special powers to go along with their massive size. Along with the giant characters are eight new Skylanders that have their own unseen powers. The game will also introduce new LightCore Skylanders that glow when on or near the Portal of Power without batteries being required.

The Portal of Power is the little accessory you set the figurines on to get them into the game. It’s also worth noting that all the characters from the original Skylanders game are compatible with Skylanders Giants. The stats and customizations applied to those original game characters will stay intact.
