Sales of Android devices go up in Australia, while iOS faces a decline

While Apple’s iPhone might be considered to be an iconic piece of technology in today’s pop culture, recently released figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech has revealed that sales of Android devices have grown, while sales of the iPhone have actually declined in Australia at least. Granted the data used only took into account over a week’s worth of iPhone 5 sales, it did show a pretty impressive move for Android from 53%, jumping to a whopping 67.1%, while iPhone sales have dropped to 23.2% versus 27.9% previously. Interestingly the figures also revealed that other platforms, like Microsoft’s Windows Phone have increased by 1% although there is a chance those numbers could increase with the release of Windows Phone 8, while RIM’s sales have dropped from 2.1% to a very small 0.6%. Perhaps RIM could do better in Australia next year with the release of Blackberry 10, but we guess we will have to wait until then to find out. In the meantime what do you guys make of this? Are you starting to notice more Android devices around you, or do you think that it’s still somewhat balanced between iOS and Android?

Microsoft transforms a country for Halo 4 launch

Microsoft has transformed the Principality of Liechtenstein for the launch of Halo 4. Microsoft tells the transformation is the world’s first and says is the only brand to ever transform the country by taking over some of its most iconic landmarks. Among the landmarks that Microsoft took over include a 13th-century castle and a working mine.

Microsoft changed the Principality of Liechtenstein to turn it into a real-life replica of the Halo universe for the launch of Halo 4 in early November. The Microsoft transformation lasted only a day as the landscapes of the countryside became the stage for an alternate universe inspired by the video game. Microsoft invited media and fans from 16 different countries to take part in the experience.

The recreation of the Halo 4 universe is called a theatrical experience. Media folks and fans had to travel to a secret location before being thrust into a war zone that re-created the brutal battlegrounds with explosions, sound effects, and cinematic set builds. I can only imagine that this was incredibly cool.

If you somehow missed all the news and talk of Halo 4, this game is the start of a new saga in the franchise and will launch on Tuesday, November 6. This has been one of the most anticipated games of the year. One of the best things about the build up to the launch for me has been the Forward Unto Dawn live-action series that ties in with the events leading up to the video game.

O2 first UK carrier to confirm LG’s Google Nexus 4

O2 to be first UK carrier offering LG's Google Nexus 4

So, heard about that Google Nexus 4 thingy from LG? O2 is the first UK carrier to announce it’ll be carrying this year’s winner of the “most-leaked Android phone” award, which was mercifully launched on Monday. So far, we’ve found the “phenomenal” quad-core, 4.7-inch, 1280 x 768 handset with virgin Jelly Bean 4.2 to be “better than the sum of its parts,” and Google will be selling the phone sim-free for an enticing £239 at the Play store. That means you’ll likely find the device free under contract, but your carrier choices may be limited to start, as O2‘s rumored to have a 30-day exclusive. There’s no mention of price or availability, but Google’s own sale date of November 13th seems a good bet.

DIY wireless charging kit for Samsung Galaxy S3 available for $55 on eBay

When the Samsung Galaxy S3 was announced, Samsung also revealed that they would be releasing wireless chargers for the device. Whether you’re a fan of wireless charging or not, it was definitely a feature that some were looking forward to. That being said, we have yet to see anything official from Samsung, but one eBay seller decided that instead of waiting around for an official solution, he would instead come up with a backplate for the Galaxy S3 that would make it compatible with Palm Touchstone chargers. Since they appear to be DIY solutions, I would go as far as saying you could make one for yourself if you were so inclined, but if you’d rather save yourself the hassle, you can hop on over to the seller’s eBay store and pick one up for yourself for $55. If you own a Palm Touchstone charger, you can instead just pick up the backplate for $28, saving yourself some money in the process.

Grand Theft Auto 5 confirmed for Spring 2013 release, pre-orders begin 5th November

Remember yesterday we reported that according to leaked promo materials, it was suggested that Grand Theft Auto 5 could be released in the Spring of 2013? Well the good news is that Rockstar has come forward and officially announced the Spring release themselves. No word on when we can expect a launch for the PC, but according to the blog post, the Spring release is for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.

“Hey guys, glad to see so much enthusiasm about the release announcement. For those asking about the PC platform, we’re currently focused on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game and don’t have any details to share about a PC version at this time.”

Now for the even better news, it seems that gamers can look forward to begin the pre-orders on the 5th of November. We’re not sure if there will be any collector’s editions available or special pre-order bonuses, but Rockstar has stated that more information will be available come November. So, who’s excited? I know I am!

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet reportedly selling nearly 1 million units every month

With the Google Nexus 7 offering Android tablet users an unadulterated Android experience, many assumed that it could prove to be a serious competitor to Apple’s iPad. On the flipside there were probably some who expected the Nexus 7 to flop – after all Android tablets, save for a few, have not exactly been success stories. Well as it turns out, ASUS (via WSJ) has announced that sales of the Google Nexus 7 are reaching almost a million units a month, a pretty impressive feat we have to admit considering that the tablet was released a few months ago. With the Nexus 10 tablet having been made official, along with new Nexus 7 variants of different sizes and mobile connectivity, it is very likely that tablet sales of the Nexus 7 will achieve even greater numbers.

Toshiba Q2 results: profit of $722 million, whole-year forecast cut by $500 million

Toshiba Q2 results profit of $722 million, wholeyear forecast cut by $500 million

Toshiba has managed to pick itself up this quarter, recording $17.8 billion in sales, making for an operating profit of $722 million over the past three months. The “social infrastructure” segments recorded a healthy profit ($518 million), while income from digital products, home appliances and electronic devices fell due lower than expected demand. Forecasts for the year have been cut for the full year by approximately $500 million to $3.26 billion, as Toshiba expects lowers sales and operating profits due to the uncertain global economic situation. Individual segments are expected to continue their distinct trends, with the social infrastructure business pulling in more while its other arms bear the brunt of the economic slowdown.

OWC unveils Mercury Aura Pro SSD for 13-inch Retina Macbook Pro

Other World Computing has announced the first SSD drive for the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, which Apple recently unveiled. The Aura Pro is a 480GB high-performance solid state drive for those brave enough to crack open their MacBook and do a bit of tinkering. Additional capacities will be announced next month.

The Retina MacBook Pro comes with 128GB of storage space, which isn’t enough for many users. OWC has stepped in with a solution, which it says offers $220 in savings over comparable 512GB drives. One of its biggest features is allowing users to keep the original flash module, which it says is often not the case with other solutions.

OWN is releasing a portable enclosure for the original factory flash module in December, which will let users utilize the drive via USB. According to the press release, several reviews have indicated that the Aura Pro drive reaches speeds of approximately 500MB/s. The original drive can reach speeds of approximately 460MB/s.

According to the announcement, one review stated that “the Aura Pro SSD outperforms the Apple SSD in nearly every way. For rMBP owners (or soon-to-be-owners) who ordered a model with the stock SSD, the upgrade to the Aura Pro is a no brainer if you need more capacity, speed, or both.” The SSD is currently available, and costs $579.99.

Panasonic shows $613 million operating profit for Q2, but lowers full year projections

The good news for Panasonic in its Q2 earnings release is that it managed to record a 48.8 billion yen ($613 million) operating profit, higher than last year. The bad news however is word of falling sales in its TV business, although we’re not hearing any confirmation of changes in its plans for mobile phones. New CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga is working a new restructuring plan that should help return divisions like its one for TV to profitability, but there will be costs upfront. The company revised its operating profit prediction for the year to 140 billion yen ($1.76 billion) based on the slower sales, and still is looking at a net loss for the year of 765 billion yen ($9.6 billion) due to deferred tax assets. Hopefully any cost-cutting doesn’t affect the quality of its Viera HDTV brand, but Panasonic will have to figure out some way to turn those stellar reviews into overall profits, even as the market continues to shrink. Our suggestion? Get some of those 8K Super Hi-Vision plasmas to market, ASAP.
