Huawei Summit hits T-Mobile for $50 sporting faux-Android duds

DNP Huawei Summit hits TMobile for $49 sporting fauxAndroid duds

A recent leaked T-Mobile roadmap showed a Huawei Summit handset that we suspected was “possibly Android-flavored,” and now that the device has arrived in the carrier’s shop, we’re still not certain. It’s a basic phone, to be sure, with a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display, 3.2-megapixel rear camera, GPS, Swype keyboard, WiFi, Bluetooth and HSPA+ network support. What’s not clear is the OS, which T-Mob cryptically lists as “proprietary,” but appears to at least have Android underpinnings, judging by the phone’s manual (and the fact that it’s rocking Swype). Hopefully, that won’t incur the wrath of Mountain View, but if you need a basic $50 phone and don’t care about Android-this or Open Handset Alliance-that, check the source.

Google threatens to exclude French media from Search in protest

Google has threatened to exclude French media websites from search results as a protest against an upcoming French law. What has the mega company so riled? The law would force search engines to shell out cold hard cash for content. Google responded that it “cannot accept” such a law.

Google sent a letter stating as much to multiple ministry offices around France, stating that if the law was passed, the company “as a consequence would be required to no longer reference French sites.” It also stated that such a model – requiring Google to pay to display links – would threaten the company’s existence.

Also in the letter was the statement that Google “redirects four billion clicks per month towards the Internet pages [of French media].” Obviously, having to pay to display those links would put a serious damper in Google’s finances, and not displaying the links will put a serious damper on those websites’ traffic numbers. According to Google, “Such a law would be harmful to the Internet.”

This comes after a call last month by a French newspaper to require search engines to pay for the links they display. The argument is that Google makes substantial revenue from advertisements from searches on media websites. This issue continues to rise as newspapers and magazines see decreased revenue from print editions. France’s Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti stated that she is in favor of the proposed law.

Microsoft Chinese online store launched

Microsoft has just rolled out a Chinese version of its online store, and not only that, they have also opened up pre-orders for their Surface RT tablet which we understand is already sold out in the US. It seems that the 32GB Surface RT sans the Touch Cover will retail for approximately $590 after conversion, which is slightly more expensive than if you were to purchase it in the US, while the 32GB and 64GB models that come with the Touch Cover will retail for $718 and $846, respectively.

Before the official Chinese online store was launched, Microsoft sold their products online in China via Tmall, which is an ecommerce site run by Alibaba. Of course, Microsoft is not alone in their attempt to bring the Surface RT to the masses in the world’s most populous country, where they have worked with Chinese retailer Suning to get the job done, although having their own online store in China would also help strengthen their case. Right now, it seems as though Microsoft is selling the Surface and Office via their online store, although there are links to what could be the future – Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox, Skype and Bing.

Onyx International EINK Android smartphone prototype emerges

ARM Devices showed off the upcoming Onyx International EINK smartphone with an e-ink display on Tuesday in a video posted on YouTube. Yes, you read that right. A smartphone with an e-ink display, the same kind used by non-tablet ebook readers. Its best feature is also possibly its worst feature: the e-ink screen, which allows the display to be visible in direct sunlight while achieving a battery life of 1 week.

The EINK features a super light rectangular body, weighing in at less than 100 grams. In the video, the battery life is stated as lasting one month, but according to ARM Devices, it is actually closer to one week. Inside you’ll find an ARM Cortex-A5 processor. There’s a SIM card slot on the side, and what looks like a mini-USB port.

The EINK runs a version of Android that has been optimized for e-ink displays so that less screen refreshes are required in order to access info on the phone. While the original e-ink devices introduced a few years ago featured unbearably slow refresh rates, the EINK has a decent refresh rate. There were a few times the phone seemed to hang, and several occasions where the screen had to be tapped two or more times.

While the EINK device would make a nice ebook reader, it’s doubtful that it will find any sort of widespread successful as a smartphone. The average smartphone user will quickly become frustrated with the slow speed at which the phone can be browsed, having been spoiled and whatnot by current smartphone offerings. The lack of color, video, and just about everything that makes smartphones awesome is probably a deal breaker for most.

Microsoft employees have donated over $1 billion to charity

For those who follow tech news, you would know that it has been some time since we have seen Bill Gates be the main star at a Microsoft press conference, but recently, he surfaced for a rather unusual event at Microsoft’s headquarters. Joining Chief Executive Steve Ballmer alongside a slew of other dignitaries, Bill Gates helped announce a milestone in the Microsoft employee giving program that kick started 30 years ago, surpassing the magical $1 billion mark. This employee giving program began after a nudge from Gates’ parents, where Microsoft has pledged to match employee contributions to nonprofit organizations while delivering direct corporate gifts.

Through the years, over 31,000 non-profit groups have benefited from the employee giving program, and Steve Ballmer has dubbed it as a “mind numbing” milestone, while dishing out words of thanks to the nonprofit “partners” who leveraged the donations while delivering an outlet for “our folks’ incredible desire to change the world.” Hey, now you know which organization to sign up with for your career if you’re generous at heart.

Skype hits 280 million plus user mark

The giant that is Skype continues moving forward without showing any signs of slowing down, where some say that this is a good thing. After getting acquired by Microsoft, Skype continued to claim new users that number in the millions, and Microsoft has revealed that the VoIP software that they own has now crossed the 280 million users threshold. Of course, it did take some poring through Microsoft’s first quarter fiscal 2013 earnings report to arrive at this figure, where Microsoft claims that Skype saw their user base swell by over 30 million users since late May.

As we all well know, having a large amount of users does not necessarily translate to a huge earnings base, and Microsoft did not reveal the amount of revenue generated by Skype in their earnings report, although they did mention that 120 billion minutes of Skype calls were included in the quarter, which represented a year-over-year increase of 58%. Are you still rocking on to Skype even today, or have you moved on to other VoIP software?

Traffic light concept might help reduce accidents

When it comes to traffic lights, the shift from standard ones to those that use LEDs has been a pretty significant jump for two reasons – it is a whole lot easier to view the current status even under bright sunlight, and if one LED goes out, the rest will still work instead of having the entire light go out of commission. Over the years, other small improvements include throwing in a timer beside the LEDs, and here is a concept by designer Chang-Chi Shih that offers smaller LED lights arranged around a timer, hence saving even more space.

Some say that such an idea might be counterproductive, as we end up depending fully on the traffic light when it turns green, going ahead without bothering as to whether others from a perpendicular road might just decide to beat their red light. Hogwash, I say, as regardless of what kind of traffic lights are in place, common sense prevails where one needs to make sure that junctions are clear before revving away. Color blind folks might have some trouble with this though…

Facebook tracks down alleged rapist who got beaten up by furious husband of ‘victim’

The world is a strange place these days, and with the advent of social networks like Facebook, things have definitely gotten stranger. A court recently heard testimony of a husband who claims that he managed to track down the man who allegedly raped his wife as a schoolgirl using the most popular social networking site in the world today, Facebook. Andrew Marsh, 27, claims that through the organization of a surprise party for his wife on Facebook, he knew of Mr. Marsh, a greengrocer, and subsequently gave him quite a hiding after convincing his wife to make a police report concerning an alleged rape in 2001.

Mr. Marsh was subsequently arrested and charged with raping the lady in an alleyway when she was still a schoolgirl. The alleged victim’s name has been withheld for legal reasons, did mention to her husband that she was raped in one of their previous talks concerning relationship difficulties, as heard by the Maidstone Crown Court. She did have a relationship with Mr. Marsh in preceding years, where she claimed he raped her against a wall.

Mr Marsh of Rochester, Kent, who is married, has denied all counts of rape and indecent assault. Well, at least this didn’t end up in a double Facebook murder as reported in February this year.

Autom robot wants you to trim the fat

When it comes to the battle of the bulge, there is a major front to fight on in the coming months – the Christmas season, where it is a free-for-all situation as you visit friends and host parties, seeing those valuable gym visits whittle away while you gorge on a seemingly endless supply of food. That gym membership is about as worthless as Japanese currency from World War 2, so you might want to enlist some outside help. Enter the Autom robot, a robot that comes with human-like expressions while helping you track your weight loss efforts.

The Autom robot is the creation of Intuitive Automata, where this social robot will carry out daily conversations with users at home. Autom will be able to track the amount of calories, share with you motivational thoughts and sayings, while updating you on the most recent weight loss trends and shares personalized suggestions. You can only let Autom help you if you’re completely honest with the answers to the questions she “asks” you over the touchscreen display. No idea on whether you will develop an emotional bond with Autom in the long run though, although if you do, the chances of success in slimming down will definitely be far higher.

Right now, Autom knows the calorie count in nearly 75,000 foods, and these include meals at popular restaurants. The first of Autom robots will ship early next year, costing $199 a pop with a $19.99 monthly subscription.
