Dish vs. Cablevision court filing hints at a settlement, could lead to AMC’s return

If you’re waiting for a sign that shows like The Walking Dead are coming back to Dish Network, a court document filed Thursday might be it. According to Reuters, the document was originally filed with the title “poss. settlement” (later changed to “adj. for briefing”) and set a date for October 22nd. Additionally, the New York Post reports that on Wednesday the Judge adjourned proceedings for the week. As you’ll recall, Cablevision sued the satellite company over its Voom HD channels being dropped back in 2008, and is asking for $2.4 billion in damages. If the two have found a resolution, the next question would be whether this affects Dish’s negotiations with Cablevision spinoff AMC Networks, which the latter claims were derailed because of its connection to Voom. If the case proceeds, Bloomberg reports Dish CEO Charlie Ergen is set to take the stand Monday — we’ll see if this can get wrapped up before Mad Men and Breaking Bad return in 2013.

Acer: Intel-powered smartphone arriving before 2012 is over

Acer of Taiwan has just announced that they will be making a splash in the smartphone market before the year is over, although they will rely on a chipset that hails from Intel in order to further expand their partnership in the fast-growing market. Not only that, Acer has plans to pre-install their very own cloud service on the new smartphone model, according to Peter Shieh, vice president of Acer’s corporate account business division in Taiwan. This was shared while they launched the new Acer S500 handset.

Other than the fact that a new Intel-powered smartphone from Acer is coming our way before the year is over, there are no further details on the mystery handset, and neither do we have a launch schedule. Do you think that Intel-powered smartphones will be able to make quite the splash in an already crowded market? Perhaps with RIM on the decline, it would pave the way for a new player to enter the market.

Apple boots out iPhone super hacker Comex

Nicholas Allegra’s launch to fame came from his unusual penchant for hunting down cracks in the iPhone’s source code. Known as the hacker Comex, he made himself a venerable thorn in Apple’s side after repeatedly releasing JailBreakMe, giving iPhone users worldwide the ability to jailbreak their Apple mobile devices. In a semi-surprising move, Apple gave Allegra an internship, which has come to a sudden end a year later.

Comex, from Chappaqua, New York, was a Brown University student on hiatus looking for an internship. He stayed under the radar for quite awhile, until Forbes fished around and discovered his name. To get an idea of hacking skills, former network exploitation analyst for the NSA told Forbes, “I didn’t think anyone would be able to do what he’s done for years…He’s totally blown me away.”

Apple offered Allegra an internship, which he accepted because he was on leave from school and bored with jailbreaking. According to a recent tweet he sent out, that internship has ended. The reason? Failure to respond to an offer to extend his employment, as well as other reasons which the hacker declined to discus.

The tweets read:

“So…no point in delaying. As of last week, after about a year, I’m no longer associated with Apple. As for why? Because I forgot to reply to an email.”

In a call with Forbes, Allegra stated that though his termination from Apple was for more reasons than failing to reply to the email, “it wasn’t a bad ending,” and that he enjoyed his time with the company. He wouldn’t say more on the subject, however. Mum’s the word on what he did for Apple during his stay.

CIA Seeks To Expand Drone Fleet, Officials Say

The CIA is urging the White House to approve a significant expansion of the agency’s fleet of armed drones, a move that would extend the spy service’s decade-long transformation into a paramilitary force, U.S. officials said.

The proposal by CIA Director David H. Petraeus would bolster the agency’s ability to sustain its campaigns of lethal strikes in Pakistan and Yemen and enable it, if directed, to shift aircraft to emerging al-Qaeda threats in North Africa or other trouble spots, officials said.

Happy Books: Inspirational Reads To Make You Smile

Call us bibliophiles if you must, but virtually all books make us smile. We love getting lost in an intricate journey, connecting with a character on an emotional level and using the parts of our brain that, otherwise, are under-stimulated.

But some books are written with the purpose of making us happier: literal handbooks — those that inspire us to take initiative to make our lives as bright as they can be. And still, others allow us to escape (if only for a moment) to a happy place.

Fidel Castro Stroke Reported: Physician Claims Former Cuba Leader ‘Very Close To A Neurovegetative State’

Fidel Castro has suffered a serious, “embolic” stroke, according to a Venezuelan physician cited by The Miami Herald.

Jose Marquina, who spoke with El Nuevo Herald and claims “firsthand sources and information” about Castro’s health, described the former leader’s condition as “very close to a neurovegetative state.” Castro is reportedly incapacitated, and “has trouble feeding, speaking and recognizing faces,” Marquina said.

Rumors about the former dictator’s supposedly failing health have surged in recent weeks. On Oct. 11, Venezuelan journalist Nelson Bocaranda said his death was imminent. Cuban state media released a statement on Wednesday that was purportedly written by Castro.

Oppo Find 5 is a quad-core monster of a smartphone

Now here is an emerging smartphone manufacturer, Oppo, where their upcoming Oppo Find 5 will definitely rub shoulders with the very best of the Android-powered smartphone family. The Oppo Find 5 is confirmed to come with a 5” Full HD resolution display (hmmm, does this mean it will compete with the recently announced HTC J Butterfly?), carry a narrow 3mm bezel while being powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 quad-core processor. Of course, the Oppo Find 5 will also be accompanied by other luxuries such as 2GB RAM, an aluminum unibody, a 12-megapixel camera at the back with a Sony backlit sensor, all crammed into a body that measures just 6.9mm thin.

To make sure the Oppo Find 5 is able to last the whole day, it comes with a rather long lasting 2500mAh battery – of course, battery life will vary depending on the kind of software you run on your smartphone. It will arrive in 16GB and 32GB flavors with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean right out of the box. No idea on whether this will hit markets outside of China just yet though, it would be nice to see a variant released.
