Walmart leaks out T-Mobile smartphone pricing details

Sometimes, we do wonder whether leaks of information by a vendor is done deliberately, or by accident, but the end game is more or less the same – attention is drawn to said leaked device(s). Well, Walmart has just leaked out pricing details on upcoming smartphones from T-Mobile, where we are looking at the Windows Phone 8X and the Nokia Lumia 810. Of course, one needs to bear in mind that carrier prices could very well vary from retailer to retailer, since it is up to the likes of Walmart to charge what they want – it is just the amount of profit margin that differs.

Recently, Sprint did reveal that they will be selling the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 for nearly $300 a pop, and it does seem that Walmart’s leak points toward a similar price point for T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note 2. In terms of Windows Phone-powered handsets, your wallet would appreciate the pricing details more as HTC’s Windows Phone 8X should cost $150 with a contract, while the Nokia Lumia 810 would hover around the $100 mark.

Google launches Play Store seller support in India

In 2012, Android device usage in India has increased over 400 percent, resulting in millions of new users and “huge increases in app downloads” via the Play Store, according to Google’s Android blog. India now holds the title of the fourth largest market for app downloads. In response, Google has launched Play seller support in India.

Developers in India can now sell apps, subscriptions, and in-app products. Payments will be issued monthly to local bank accounts, according to the announcement. This opens the doors for Indian developers to monetize their work, and for local businesses to take advantage of the Play Store marketplace.

As of today, developers in India can utilize seller support via their Developer Console account. After signing in, developers will then need to create a Google Checkout merchant account, after which new apps can be published as paid products. For those who already have apps in the Play Store, a subscription or in-app product can be added for monetization.

The apps can be priced “in any available currencies,” with payments and financial reports being provided in the local currency. In addition to the new seller support, Google has also added buyer’s currency support for developers in India. This allows apps to be sold in multiple currencies, such as Rupees and USD, for example.

Nexus 7 tablet is best selling Android tablet in the UK

There is a fair number of Android-powered tablets in the market today that aim to go toe-to-toe against the Apple iPad (and we would presume, the iPad mini subsequently), and the Nexus 7 from Google (manufactured by Asus) is one of them. Well, it seems that since the Nexus 7 tablet went on sale on July 27th in the UK by Carphone Warehouse, it has become the best selling Android tablet in that part of the world to date. Of course, this does not mean that the Nexus 7 has outsold the iPad – far from it, but at least it outdid the Asus Transformer Prime and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, perhaps its £159 price tag has something to do with it as well.

Of course, there are other newer faces to the market such as Amazon’s latest Kindle Fire HD that will also retail for £159 a pop. Graham Stapleton, Chief Commercial Officer at Carphone Warehouse, said, “It’s impressive that this product is our biggest selling Android tablet, and it will be really interesting to see if other manufacturers will follow suit with smaller tablets over the coming months to spice up the Christmas period.” If you happen to live in the UK and are using an Android-powered tablet, just which model are you rocking to?

AFL-CIO Mail Campaign: ‘Things Are Bad’

WASHINGTON — The nation’s largest union federation is beginning a massive direct-mail campaign designed to encourage union members to vote in the November elections.

In total, the AFL-CIO is set to blast out 1.5 million pieces of mail touching on 31 congressional races, six Senate races, two gubernatorial races, and one ballot initiative. It is a big investment for the union federation, which has focused its election efforts far more on direct contact with members than television ads.

The themes in the mailers are mixed. Only a few include references to President Barack Obama or Republican challenger Mitt Romney. All of the mailers are jobs-focused and emphasize policies to help the middle class, protect Medicare, and support education.

MediaPortal posts new beta with new interface and CableCARD, teases bigger sequel video

MediaPortal is a rare veteran spinoff of XBMC — a testament to its fan base, but also a sign that it needs a fresh coat of paint. A new 1.3 beta might offer just what home theater PC users have been looking for to keep the front end relevant, at least in the short term. It carries a much more contemporary (and less Windows Media Center-like) skin with minor tweaks to the layout and overall interface. CableCARD support also makes its overdue appearance, although the lack of official CableLabs approval keeps the software from recognizing any copy-protected shows. Don’t fret if those additions aren’t enough, however — we’ve been given a hint as to what the long-in-development MediaPortal 2 will offer through a pair of videos. The clips are largely top-level overviews, but they allude to mobile tie-ins, events, extensions, more skin support, video backgrounds and news. With an Autumn Build of MP2 available “right around the corner” for viewers, it might not be long before we learn what those new additions are like through first-hand experience.

Joe Walsh On Abortion: No Exception For ‘Life Of The Mother’ Thanks To ‘Advances In Science And Technology’

Republican Rep. Joe Walsh, running against Democratic challenger Tammy Duckworth in Illinois, told reporters Thursday night that there should be no abortion exception for the “life of the mother” because “with modern technology and science, you can’t find one instance” in which a woman would actually die, according to a radio station. Walsh, of course, is flat wrong.

“There is no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing,” Walsh continued. The comments were first reported by the Illinois radio station WGN.

“There is no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing, with advances in science and technology,” Walsh said, according to the video above. CREDO superPAC, which is opposing Walsh, tipped HuffPost to the comments.
