Newsweek to drop print edition after December 31st, gives the digital future a warm hug

It’s no secret that print media is on its way out, as many regional and niche publications have had to either find a path through the digital wilderness or fold completely. We’re still not used to national publications facing that ultimatum, though, which makes Newsweek‘s fresh decision to drop its print edition after December 31st both unusual and a bellwether. Anyone still yearning for the magazine’s content after the presses stop will have to turn to the purely digital Newsweek Global or its The Daily Beast sibling, no matter how attached they are to the outlet’s 80-year history with paper. The explanation for the cutoff remains a familiar story: print readership is dying on the vine and expensive to maintain, while web and tablet adoption is growing quickly enough that Newsweek believes it can make the switch without taking a long-term financial hit. Whether or not the transition works, it’s evident the periodical knows its identity must be wrapped around an online presence — figuratively, not literally.

Twitter criticized for lax policing after Neo-Nazi tweet block

Twitter has been criticized after blocking access to a neo-Nazi message, though for not being proactive enough in its censorship rather than being heavy-handed. The short-message social network flexed its country-specific takedown tools for the first time this week, blocking users in Germany from reading posts by a right-wing extremest group after requests from local law enforcement. However, Twitter still “lags far behind other established social media platforms” one watchdog argues.

“Twitter is fast becoming the Internet’s distribution platform of choice for bigots who use it to get their messages of hate out in 140 characters or less,” Anti-Defamation League national director Abraham H. Foxman said in a statement. “Twitter’s terms of service lag far behind other established social media platforms in setting standards which would provide a basis for Twitter to block or remove racist, hate-filled tweets and re-tweets.”

The blocked account was downed at the request of the Hannover Police, according to a copy of the notice sent to Twitter in late September at Chilling Effects, after government intervention in the extremist group. Germany has strict anti-Nazi laws, though free speech provisions in countries such as the US mean such tweets, however distasteful many readers may find them, are legally permitted.

“The Ministry of the Interior of the State of Lower-Saxony in Germany has banned the organisation “Besseres Hannover”. It is disbanded, its assets are seized and all its accounts in social networks have to be closed immediately” the Hannover Police wrote to Twitter. “The Public Prosecutor (State Attorney’s Office) has launched an investigation on suspicion of forming a criminal association. It is the task fo [sic] the Polizeidirektion Hannover (Hannover Police) to enforce the ban. I ask you to close this account immediately and not to open any substitute accounts for the organisation “Besseres Hannover”.”

Twitter’s reaction – commented on by company general counsel Alex Macgillivray as “Never want to withhold content; good to have tools to do it narrowly and transparently” – nonetheless proved insufficient for the ADL, who have demanded a method by which individuals can flag and/or delete offensive tweets. “The pervasiveness of anti-Semitism and racism on Twitter” the group said, “warrants a re-examination of its terms of service and implementation of user-friendly mechanisms to flag and remove problematic tweets.”

Facebook, meanwhile, has not commented specifically on the group, nor confirmed whether it was contacted regarding a takedown of any connected page. “We work with anti-Nazi organisations and would encourage anyone who finds content like this to report it to Facebook” the social site told the BBC.

Chevrolet to announce 2014 Corvette on January 13

Chevrolet will be officially announcing the 7th-generation Corvette on January 13, 2013 during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, MI. The company confirmed today that the all-new 2014 Corvette will be unveiled in Motor City itself, and has teased the new Corvette “Crossed Flags” logo to celebrate the announcement (pictured below).

The new, 7th-gen Corvette (also known as the C7) is expected to have a completely new look, both on the outside and on the inside, and will have a lighter chassis with a more efficient engine and transmission. The transmission is expected to have seven gears to improve acceleration and possibly improve gas mileage.

GM will begin production of the 2014 Corvette in volume starting in July, and will stop production of the 2013 model sometime in early February. The first of the new Corvettes is expected to roll off the assembly line in Bowling Green, KY on June 30, which will be 60 years to the day that the first 1953 Corvette model was assembled. The new Corvette’s unveiling come mid-January will also mark the anniversary of the Corvette’s original debut in January 1953, which was introduced as just a concept back then.

Since 1953, GM has built and sold more than 1.5 million Corvettes. And although sales have slowed down significantly the past few years, the company is looking to regain interest in the Corvette with the car’s new redesign. The Corvette hasn’t seen a complete makeover since the 6th-generation Corvette was unveiled in 2004.

Researchers debate probe to Alpha Centauri Bb

The Earth-sized exoplanet just discovered so close to us in space that we could basically hit it with a tossed rock, Alpha Centauri Bb, has been the topic of discussion this week with unmanned probes coming up as a real possibility. With this planet – also known as 51 Pegasi b – we’re to understand that it’s both slightly too close to its star to be habitable by humans and nearly identical to our planet in mass. The system in which this planet exists contains two stars, Centauri A and B, and exists just a bit more than four light years away from us right this minute.

The system also contains a red dwarf by the name of Proxima Centauri, and the star Centauri B – around which this newly discovered 51 Pegasi b orbits – is nearly the same mass as our own sun. To find the planet that’s being reported on this week, researchers had to watch the star for four years, observing its gravitational “wobble” to calculate what was encircling it. Because planets like the one we’re speaking about here generally exist in groups, the astronomers reporting this set of findings have said that it’s quite likely that this planet will have some neighbors nearby.

While Proxima Centauri is indeed the closest star to our own Sun at 4.2 light years away, the Alpha Centauri A and B are right around 4.4 light years away and are ripe for exploration sometime in the future. A non-profit group by the name of Icarus Interstellar, registered in the USA in the state of Alaska at the moment, aims to send an unmanned probe to another star system within this next century – Alpha Centauri suddenly seems like a riper goal than ever.

“I have often imagined the day when scientists directly image an Earth-like extra-solar planet. We would be able to determine the planet’s atmosphere and surface temperature from its spectrum, and we would thus know whether it might be able to sustain life as we know it. I suspect that once such a discovery hits the news, people worldwide are going to demand that we send a probe to determine whether the planet has life (of any type) and/or could be suitable for human habitation. If the latter proves true, then a manned mission would eventually follow.

The discovery of (Alpha) Centauri Bb isn’t quite as momentous as this owing to its proximity to the star, but this discovery is a warning shot that the news is coming a lot sooner than we think.” – Icarus Deputy Project Leader Robert Freeland

Stay tuned as we travel to other planets quicker than you think – expect probes inside your lifetime, folks – we’re headed upward and outward!

Nokia’s Elop: A “Surface” Windows Phone 8? Bring it on!

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has dismissed concerns that Microsoft might sway the Windows Phone 8 market by releasing a “Surface” branding smartphone of its own, saying instead that the company would welcome it. Speaking in the aftermath of Nokia’s less-than-glowing Q3 2012 financial results, Elop said that while he had seen “no indications” that Microsoft planned to follow its Surface tablet with a phone, such a device would be “certainly a stimulant to the ecosystem.”

In fact, while rival smartphone manufacturers have been snippy at times about their Windows Phone counterparts, Elop has generally taken a more “for the good of the platform” approach to competing devices. ”We’re encouraging of HTC and Samsung and Microsoft or whomever to have devices in the market,” he explained, “and to be making whatever investments that helps spur the ecosystem on.”

Still, Elop doesn’t always refuse to wade into the fray. After HTC managed to clinch “signature” branding from Microsoft for its 8X and 8S phones, Elop commented that Nokia’s devices are “a step above” what its competitor has created.

That message carried on today, in the financial results call. “We’re very proud of the unique differentiation that we are bringing to the Windows Phone platform,” Elop said, describing it as “not something that’s easily replicated or reinvented.”

Nonetheless, Nokia needs Windows Phone to gather momentum with alacrity, given it – and Microsoft – basically undermined its Q3 sales by announcing that existing phones wouldn’t get upgraded to WP8, and showing off the incoming range. With devices based on the platform only expected to hit shelves in mid-November, however, the company has warned that Q4 is unlikely to be a blockbuster.

Huawei Ascend W1 render revealed, WP8 in a cyan chassis

Huawei Ascend W1 render revealed, WP8 in a cyan chassis

Nokia’s shown off its Windows Phone 8 wares, so has HTC, and we knew Huawei was bringing a WP8 handset to the table sometime soon, too. That day has finally arrived, as an official looking render of the Ascend W1 has popped up on Twitter. If the picture’s to be believed, the Chinese firm’s handset sports bright coloration similar to its Windows Phone compatriots, and looks to be a handsome addition to the family. Drink it in folks, the official unveiling is likely just over a week away.

As The Droid RAZR HD And HD MAXX Hit VZW, Amazon Drops The Price Of The Samsung Galaxy S III To $99

razrhd

The Droid Razr HD and Droid Razr Maxx HD have pranced their way across a stage or two, and they’re even the stars of a new commercial, but today you’ll get to go face-to-face with the hot new Googorola phones at a Verizon store for $199 and $299 respectively.

This also marks the beginning of a new price cycle for the carriers, which seems to be starting at Amazon Wireless, where the $199 Galaxy S III has been dropped to $99 on Verizon and Sprint.

Sprint, as you may recall, will be getting the Samsung Galaxy Note II on October 25 for $299.

The Droid Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD mark the continuation of a profitable alliance in Verizon and Motorola, and solidify it with Google as a new backbone for Motorola after the $12.5 billion acquisition. But it’s also worth remembering that these phones ship with Android 4.0.4 ICS. Not Jelly Bean.

Whatever the case, these are top-of-the-line phones, with 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD 720p displays, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processors, and an 8-megapixel shooter that captures 1080p video. Not to mention a super thin Kevlar fiber casing.

And to top that off, Motorola promises great battery life, which is a struggle for all of us. The Droid Razr HD and Maxx HD have 2530 mAH and 3300 mAH batteries respectively, promising something like 16 and 21 hours of straight usage.

Both super phones are available now at Verizon.
