Myst linking book replica goes on sale with full PC inside, won't take us to other worlds video

Most of us who remember Myst are content to relive the halcyon days of click-and-watch puzzle games by loading up the iPhone port. Mike Ando is slightly more… dedicated. He just spent the past six years building a replica of the Cyan game’s signature, Age-traveling link books that includes a full Windows XP PC with a 1.6GHz Atom, a 2-hour battery, a 5-inch touchscreen and every playable game from the Myst series stored on a CF card. And while we’ve seen books hiding devices before, Ando’s attention to detail might just raise the eyebrows of hardcore custom PC and gaming fans alike: he went so far as to gut and emboss a 135-year-old copy of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine to match Cyan’s reference tome as closely as possible. It’s tempting for anyone who cut their teeth on CD-based gameplay through Myst, but perfect devotion to one of the better-known fictional worlds will cost an accordingly steep $15,625. We wouldn’t have minded seeing some real intra-world travel for the cash outlay.

Sandy cuts a path of destruction, takes out 25% of cell towers

Sandy was definitely an unwanted visitor on the East Coast, but the tenacity of the human spirit continues to prevail over natural disasters. As for cell towers, those did not fare too well, as Sandy knocked out approximately 25% of cell towers across an area that spread across 10 states in the US. Federal regulators said that this is not all, as the entire situation could end up a whole lot worse sometime down the road.

The remaining cell towers that still function are barely working, thanks to aid from generators. The situation could change for the worse as the generators eventually run out of fuel before commercial power is restored, at least according to the Federal Communications Commission. Good thing the landline phone network (logically) held up better where Sandy made her mark, in a land area that stretches from Virginia to Massachusetts. No idea on the number for folks who are affected by 25% of the cell towers going down, but let us keep our fingers crossed and whisper a prayer that whatever could be done was done, leaving the rest to fate.

Google introduces evacuation routes in maps after Sandy aftermath

There is only one thing that I can say about the whole situation – I am glad that it is Google who provided maps that depict the different evacuation routes as well as various shelters for those affected by Hurricane Sandy to go to, if it were Apple Maps, one would most probably find non-existent shelters, or perhaps they might even walk into the eye of the storm itself. Apart from that, the Internet search giant also introduced a new service which will send emergency alerts to Google users.

All the information provided was garnered from government agencies such as Ready.gov and the National Weather Service. Google initially wanted to introduce this service sometime down the road, but needless to say, Hurricane Sandy forced Google’s hand, and the future iterations of Google’s efforts will include alerts from other services such as Nixle that publishes messages from the local police.

Nigel Snoad, a product manager for Google Crisis Response, said, “This is part of our continuing mission to bring emergency information to people when and where it is relevant.” Did you find this new service to be extremely useful?

Dell XPS 10 hits the FCC

Whenever a particular device or consumer electronics arrive at the FCC, you know for sure that it is being primed for a general release to the masses, and the same can be said for the Dell XPS 10. Having arrived at the doorsteps of the FCC today, complete with its user manual as well as photos of the 10” tablet’s case and internal components, we do look forward to the day where the Dell XPS 10’s product page appears for the masses to take advantage of – after parting with their fair share of dollars and cents, of course.

For starters, the Dell XPS 10 is a 10” tablet that will carry a 1366 x 768 pixel display, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, have up to 64GB RAM, sports both front and rear cameras, has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It will run on the Windows RT platform, which is actually Windows 8 for devices that have ARM-based processors underneath the hood, so kiss goodbye to backwards compatibility of older apps which run on Windows 7 and before.

Smart uniform closes pores when it detects harmful chemicals

Being in the military – especially if you are in the higher ranks, would make you privy to some of the more unusual devices that do make you wonder whether you are living in a science fiction world. This time around, researchers are exploring the possibility of a new kind of fabric that will see action in military uniforms, sporting pores to keep soldiers cool. This will be a smart uniform of sorts, as it can quickly shut its pores whenever it detects the presence of harmful chemicals in the vicinity. Sorta like a prototype of the alien symbiote that Spiderman and Venom “wore” in the comics.

Francesco Fornasiero, a chemical engineer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, said, “Without the need of an external control system, the fabric will be able to switch reversibly from a highly breathable state to a protective one in response to the presence of the environmental threat. In the protective state, the uniform will block the chemical threat while maintaining a good breathability level.”

It will take some time before such uniforms are combat ready, as researchers have only managed to make small pieces of one layer of the proposed fabric. Such futuristic material could eventually take up to a decade to be ready for action on the battlefield, so treading on the cautious side of things would still be the order of the day at the moment.

US drone transmissions are not as secure as we think

You know what they say – a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and in the case of the US military with their vaunted army of Predator and Reaper drones, it was discovered that our men and women in uniform have failed to secure the transmissions of more than 50% of their drone fleet – this bit of information coming about four years after discovering that militants were already tapping its drone video feeds. Back in 2008, a Shiite militant was apprehended after his laptop carried files of intercepted drone video feeds, where the Pentagon then pledged to retrofit their collection of drones with spanking new communications protocols and encrypted transceivers to avoid interceptions.

Four years down the road, it could be oversight, or complacency, that saw only “30-50%” of America’s Predators and Reapers are running on fully encrypted transmissions. As for the rest of the fleet, its communications will be completely secure until 2014. Do you think that this is a foolhardy decision, or could it be due to the lack of sufficient funds to make sure that all their drones are fully secure and encrypted?

Steve King: Hurricane Sandy Aid Must Have Strings To Avoid Waste On ‘Gucci Bags’

WASHINGTON — Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said on Tuesday that federal aid for people impacted by Hurricane Sandy should be approved only with a specific spending plan in place so funds are not used for “Gucci bags and massage parlors,” like after Hurricane Katrina.

“I want to get them the resources that are necessary to lift them out of this water and the sand and the ashes and the death that’s over there in the East Coast and especially in the Northeast,” King said during a Tuesday evening debate in Mason City, Iowa.

“But not one big shot to just open up the checkbook, because they spent it on Gucci bags and massage parlors and everything you can think of in addition to what was necessary,” he said later, referring to Hurricane Katrina.

Honda Fit She’s target the ladies

Honda, one of the larger automobile manufacturers in the world, has just rolled out a new model that targets ladies, calling it the Honda Fit She’s. Available only in Japan at this point in time with no word on whether the rest of the world will be able to receive this compact ride, the Honda Fit She’s will target nearly 50% of Japanese women who decided to remain out of the work force. According to Honda’s designers, this version of the Honda Fit will be cute enough for adults, sporting a pink exterior, pink stitching on the interior, and shiny pink chrome covers on the dashboard. It would take a whole lot for most males to drive this to work for sure. Heck, even a heart replaces the apostrophe in “She’s” in order to underline Honda’s seriousness to the commitment.

Good thing you can also choose from brown and white if you are a lady who does not like pink – at least brown and white can help complement your eye shadow color, no? Aesthetics are not the only thing with the Honda Fit She’s, as it sports a new kind of windshield which is touted to block up to 99% of UV rays, helping reduce the chances of attaining wrinkles whenever you drive during the daytime. There is also a Plasmacluster AC system that treats the air quality, supposedly improving one’s skin quality as you drive.

Transformation House rotates freely for unprecedented flexibility

Michael Jantzen‘s Transformation House is truly an abode that is out of the ordinary. Basically, this is a design study for an interactive and responsive self-contained structure, where it is more than capable of changing its shape to adapt to various functions. Assuming the Allspark touches it, it might end up being one of the weirder looking Transformers ever, but since we are grounded in reality at the moment, the Transformation House sports five center sections which can be rotated manually or automatically around the living space. This means the house’s windows and wind scoops can be rotated 360°, helping you make the most of sunlight during the winter, or catch as much wind as possible during summer to keep things nice and cool. Heck, there are also relevant areas to catch falling rain so that you have an alternative water supply instead of piped water.

The Transformation House relies on lightweight steel with a glass floor to get the job done, where it is also partially clad with photovoltaic cells so that electricity can be generated for its internal needs. We do stop and ask ourselves whether all of the other future homes would look like this, and will the costs of construction rise in tandem with such a complex structure?

Natural Sapphire Company releases $700,000 iPad mini case

Have you picked up the iPad mini yet? We have already placed our pre-order for one so that we can deliver a review for our dear readers in due time, but at the moment, it does not look too likely that we will be forking out a whopping $700,000 for a case that protects a device which is worth a tiny fraction of that amount of money. Natural Sapphire Company thinks that there is an extremely niche market of the super rich (and foolish to some) to hand over a cool $700,000 for an iPad mini case.

The main reason behind its rather insane price tag would be an 18K high-polished white gold body that is covered in 3,328 natural Ceylon blue sapphires. At the back, the famous bitten Apple logo consists of 500 round diamonds that carry total weight of 5 carats. In fact, if you still want this unique case so badly and yet do not have more than half a million at the moment, Natural Sapphire Company has a plan for you – just pay it off in three instalments of $233,333.33 a month. Dropping this case is going to cause far more heartache than if you were to drop an unprotected iPad mini alone.
