GOP Remains Far Away Off From Winning Jewish Vote

NEW YORK — Like Chicago Cubs fans in spring, Jewish Republicans start every presidential election season hoping this will be their year. They hope American Jews, who have voted overwhelmingly Democratic for decades, will start a significant shift to the political right. But scholars who study Jewish voting patterns say it won’t happen in 2012.

Although recent studies have found potential for some movement toward the GOP, analysts say any revolution in the U.S. Jewish vote won’t occur anytime soon.

The Very Best Time To Book Airline Tickets, According To Kayak

A new survey of more than a billion airfare searches has revealed the very best time to book your flight, says a spokeswoman for Kayak.

Sifting through an average of 100 million queries per month from January to December 2011, the search site says fliers looking for the best prices should book exactly 21 days prior to departure.

Book in that sweet spot, Kayak says, and you’ll pay the domestic average of $342 a ticket — versus the $370 you’d pay on average for a ticket booked six months out.

Keeping Kids Safe Online: New FBI Program Teaches Cybersecurity To Children

By: Ben Weitzenkorn
Published: 10/16/2012 05:03 PM EDT on TechNewsDaily

The Federal Bureau of Investigation unveiled a new program yesterday (Oct. 15) aimed at teaching children the best practices for staying safe online.

The FBI-SOS (Safe Online Surfing) Internet Challenge takes third- through eighth-graders to grade-specific virtual islands where games, videos and other media teach kids about specific aspects of online safety as it relates to cellphones, social networks, chatrooms and more in a way that’s engaging and visually appealing.

In order to get as many kids to think about their security habits as possible, teachers are encouraged to sign up their classes. Once each student completes the course on their island, students can take an exam that will be electronically graded by the FBI (scary!).

There’s a competitive aspect too. Based on the number of participants, schools are ranked on a leader board and have the opportunity to win trophies and an educational visit from a local FBI agent.

Teachers and schools who choose to enroll their class in the cybersecurity literacy course will be provided with resources such as a teacher’s guide, online content and instructions.

Whether you’re in elementary school, junior high or a high-rise office building, it’s never too late or too soon to learn about or brush up on what makes for a safe online experience. The games may be tailored to children, but they will undoubtedly benefit adults too.

Joaquin-Division said that within a matter of days of joining an online dating site, he received 387 rejection emails.

“That doesn’t do you very, very good on the psyche,” he said.

Verizon sells 6.8m smartphones in Q3 2012

Verizon Wireless sold 6.8m smartphones in the last quarter, with service revenues in Q3 2012 climbing 7.5-percent year-on-year and 1.8m new customers inking agreements. Revenues hit $16.2bn for the three month period in wireless, with smartphones now comprising more than 53-percent of Verizon’s mobile users. Meanwhile, the average spend by those users is also up, with average revenue per account (a switch away from average revenue per user) climbing 6.5-percent to $145.42 per month.

That change is since the introduction of the Share Everything plans, which allow multiple devices to dip into a single bucket of data. Verizon now reports revenue per account, since individual devices may no longer have a data package all to itself.

Elsewhere in Verizon’s business, wireless customers grew in number, with 136,000 new FiOS internet connections and 119,000 new FiOS Video connections; in total, there are now 5.3m subscribing to FiOS internet and 4.6m subscribing to FiOS Video. Average revenue per user has risen above $150, and two-thirds of customers use FiOS for their phone, internet, and video service.

Overall, Verizon’s operating revenues were up 3.9-percent year-on-year to $29bn, with Q3 operating income up to $5.5bn. “Verizon continued to deliver double-digit earnings growth and strong cash generation, and we remain solidly on track to meet our financial objectives for the year” CEO Lowell McAdam said of the results.

Future World of Warcraft updates to be more frequent, but smaller

Usually when it comes to adding new content, especially major ones, to MMORPGs, developers release huge patches. Then there are also smaller patches which are released regularly which address bugs and various issues plaguing the game. Perhaps in an effort to keep the game dynamic and adding new, but not always major content, Blizzard has revealed their plans to make World of Warcraft updates more frequent, and smaller. This was confirmed by Blizzard’s J. Allen Brack in an interview with RPS. (more…)

Sprint Nextel takes control of Clearwire after increasing stake to 50.8 percent

A securities filing has just revealed that Sprint Nextel has acquired 50.8 percent of Clearwire Corp giving it control of the firm. The deal comes after buying out Eagle River Holdings’ stake in the telco. This comes just days after Sprint was subject to a sale of its own, to Japanese operator Softbank. The news is the latest twist in the up and down relationship between the two firms, and hints at a more assertive LTE strategy — given that it now has more say over Clearwire’s spectrum. Although it remains unclear how this will affect deals with other operators. If you really want to get in to the nitty-gritty, head on down to the Securities and Exchange Commission doc in the source link below.
