Nokia’s Q3 2012: $9.4 billion in sales, 2.9 million Lumias sold and losses trimmed to $754 million

DNP Nokia's Q3 2012 financials

Q4 2011: $1.3 billion loss. Q1 2012: $1.7 billion loss. Q2 2012: $1.01 billion loss. Q3 2012: $754 million loss. It seems that Stephen Elop’s financial measures may finally be having the desired effect as Nokia records its first sub-billion dollar quarterly loss for a year. It’s managed to reduce its losses despite a slowdown in Lumia sales — falling from four million last quarter to 2.9 million now, but given that the company is at the end of a product cycle, that’s hardly surprising. It also had positive news to report in its “mobile phone” business, where it sold 77 million (up from 73 million last quarter) dumb, feature and Asha handsets, the latter comprising 6.5 million of the total figure. However, the company’s failure to crack America isn’t helping its fortunes since it only sold around 300,000 units — although those exclusive partnerships with AT&T probably haven’t helped.

Away from device sales, the company’s location and commerce department had a difficult quarter, but the sale of map content licenses (to companies like Amazon) offset the dwindling popularity of standalone GPS units. Nokia Siemens Networks, on the other hand, kept raking in the cash with a $238.5 million profit. The company could also count on its regular check from Microsoft, which kicked in another $250 million to help it through its transition. Overall, it’s been able to stabilize its cash reserves, with the company mattress currently holding $4.66 billion — and with the arrival of Windows Phone 8 and the new Lumias not too far away, it might actually be time to crack open a little bubbly before the crew gets back to work.

Viper SmartStart gets Siri integration

Viper is a company that has been in the car alarm business for a very long time. Viper makes all manner of systems to protect your vehicle from theft and to start it for you remotely. The most interesting product from Viper in recent years is the SmartStart.

We first talked about this product back in 2010. The Viper SmartStart is a car alarm system that can remotely lock and unlock your car doors, arm your security system, pop the trunk, and start your car using a smartphone app operating on the iPhone or Android platforms. Viper has announced an update for the system for iPhone users that adds another interesting new feature.

With the SmartStart 3.0.1 app update, the system gets integration with Siri. Once the update is applied users can launch the SmartStart app by simply activating Siri and saying “SmartStart.” The app can also be set to define a command that is executed when the app is launched. If the command that is defined is to start the car remotely, the user would be able to launch the app and start their vehicle up using their voice.

The updated app requires the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 running iOS 6.0. The update also brings other improvements such as in-app controls for SMS and e-mail notifications from the system. The update is available for owners of the system to download right now.

Apple loses out in UK tablet design case against Samsung

Image

Remember when a UK judge said that Samsung couldn’t have copied the iPad with its Galaxy Tab because it wasn’t “as cool” as the iPad? Well, Apple has just lost the High Court appeal to have that decision overturned, meaning that despite the backhanded compliment, it will still have to run adverts in the press stating that the Korean giant had not copied its tablet designs.

Nokia Lumia 920′s exclusivity on AT&T reportedly only for six months

So we know that the Nokia Lumia 920 will be an exclusive to AT&T, while this might be good news for AT&T subscribers, it might not be for those on other networks who might want the Lumia 920 but don’t want to switch carriers, and at the same time don’t want to buy it unlocked at its full retail price. Well according to the folks at WPCentral, one of their sources have tipped them off that the Lumia 920 will be an AT&T exclusive for a good six months, which means that after that hopefully the other carriers will add the Windows Phone 8 handset to their portfolio. However given that the Lumia 820 has been renamed depending on which carrier it lands on, there is a good chance that the Lumia 920 could be renamed to the Lumia 9xx depending on the carrier it goes to after the AT&T exclusivity. So what do you guys think? Anyone planning to wait it out, or will you buy it unlocked, or just get a different phone entirely?

Isis confirms mobile wallet rollout on Monday

Yesterday we reported that according to a T-Mobile leak, it was suggested that the Isis mobile wallet feature could be arriving in the Google Play stores come 22nd of October. Well the good news is that if you were looking forward to a mobile wallet feature, you’re in luck as Isis has come forward and announced that this is indeed true, and that come next Monday, customers can expect the mobile wallet feature. While this might be a pretty convenient and useful feature, it will require phones that are compatible with it, and according to Isis, customers can expect 20 Isis-compatible handsets by the end of the year.

While T-Mobile has yet to confirm the number of Isis devices they will offer, AT&T has confirmed that they will have five phones that will play nice with the mobile wallet feature. This includes the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X, Samsung Exhilarate, LG Espace, and the Samsung Rugby Pro. Verizon said that their Isis-compatible handsets will be announced on Monday, although it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to think that the Samsung Galaxy S3 for Verizon will be one of them.

Nintendo issues official statement on underage Foxconn workers

One of the biggest stories in the technology world this week has been the revelation that Foxconn was hiring underage employees. Foxconn has been plagued in the last year or so with multiple complaints and allegations of unfair and unsafe working conditions in many of its factories. Foxconn is contracted by many of the world’s biggest technology companies to build products.

One of Foxconn’s highest profile clients is Apple with Foxconn constructing the iPhone and other gadgets for the technology giant. However, Apple isn’t the only massive and successful technology company that contracts with Foxconn to assemble electronics and other products. Microsoft also contracts with Foxconn to construct products and Foxconn builds the Nintendo Wii U that will be coming on the market soon.

Nintendo has issued an official statement on Foxconn hiring children under the age of 16 to work in its Yantai factory in China. Foxconn recently announced that some interns were as young as 14 years old and Chinese law states the workers under the age of 16 can’t be hired. One official news agency of China has previously claimed that Foxconn hired underage interns in an effort to make up for a shortage of 19,000 employees.

Chinese news agency Xinhua has reported that as many as 56 underage workers were returned home from Foxconn’s internship program. Nintendo has noted that is in communication with Foxconn and is investigating underage workers. The company says that they require all production partners, including Foxconn, to comply with their procurement guidelines set out in July 2008. Nintendo says that it requires any production partners that don’t meet those guidelines to modify their practices according to Nintendo’s policy. You can read Nintendo’s official statement below.

“Nintendo is in communication with Foxconn and is investigating the matter. We take our responsibilities as a global company very seriously and are committed to an ethical policy on sourcing, manufacture and labor. In order to ensure the continued fulfillment of our social responsibility throughout our supply chain, we established the Nintendo CSR Procurement Guidelines in July 2008. We require that all production partners, including Foxconn, comply with these Guidelines, which are based on relevant laws, international standards and guidelines. If we were to find that any of our production partners did not meet our guidelines, we would require them to modify their practices according to Nintendo’s policy. For more information about Nintendo’s Corporate Social Responsibility report, please visit http://www.nintendo.co.jp/csr/en/index.html.”
