Sony NEX-7 firmware update released

If you happen to be a proud owner of a Sony αNEX -7 digital camera, then you might be smiling from ear to ear upon hearing this bit of news – there is a new firmware update released for the device, in addition to firmware updates for E-mount lenses as well as select Sony Alpha cameras. The αNEX-7 Firmware v1.01 will let you disable the Movie Record button which is pretty handy since you will no longer start movie recording by accident, in addition to the expansion of EV Bracketing to include 3 frame 1EV, 2EV and 3EV increments. Not only that, auto playback responsiveness has been improved alongside image quality when you take advantage of a wide angle lens. Last but not least, the firmware update will also improveme the indication when setting “Flexible Spot” AF mode.

As for the E-mount lens firmware v.2, it will apply to the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Standard Zoom Lens ( SEL1855), the 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 Telephoto Lens (SEL55210), the 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Telephoto Lens (SEL18200) and the 24mm f/1.8 Wide-Angle Prime Lens (SEL24F18Z), letting one enable Hybrid AF function with NEX-5R and NEX-6. Bear in mind that the E-mount lens firmware v2 is for the lens and not the camera, so you can only perform the firmware upgrade when the lenses are hooked up attached to Hybrid AF capable cameras (αNEX-5R/αNEX-6). Twitter uses country-block censorship tool for first time in Germany

Back in January, Twitter announced that it would allow the company to ban content in specific countries upon legal request, rather than restrict it globally to all Twitter users. Now, for the first time, the company has used its new-ish tool, blocking access in Germany to the Twitter account Besseres Hannover, a neo-Nazi group. This action was taken after the Germany Ministry of the Interior for Lower-Saxony sent a request to Twitter asking that the account be removed.

If you were in Germany, visiting the banned Twitter page would reveal the message, “Tweet withheld. This Tweet from @hannoverticket has been withheld in: Germany. Learn more.” When visiting the offending Twitter account in the US, however, it shows up like normal. This is because the account in perfectly legal in the US, but not in Germany, where neo-Nazi hate groups are illegal.

The moment was announce with a simple tweet by Twitter’s general counsel, Alex Macgillivray, which reads: “We announced the ability to withhold content back in Jan. We’re using it now for the first time re: a group deemed illegal in Germany.” This is the same process that Google uses, as well, in censoring information that may be perfectly fine in one locale, but banned or otherwise restricted in another. The thought of censorship in any form draws its fair share of critics.

During the Olympics, Twitter was accused of censoring the social media account of Guy Adams, journalist, who was critical of NBC’s coverage of the event. Twitter apologized, and while many felt that the accusation was unfair, others claimed it hinted at a dangerous trend. Whatever your stance on censorship, it should be noted that Twitter has had this feature for almost a year, and just now used it, indicating that the company isn’t particularly keen on running around blocking content.

GTA 5 release date set before March 2013, says analyst

Being an analyst carries an incredibly heavy responsibility – what you say could actually be gospel truth for some. Some analysts tend to say very little, but when they do, they are absolutely spot on. This time around, we have games industry analyst Michael Pachter who claims that the long awaited GTA 5 game will be released before March 2013. His came to this speculation based on the recent GameInformer announcement that GTA 5 is scheduled for an appearance on November’s cover issue, hence leading him to put his money on a release date sometime before Q1 2013 is over.

When Pachter was interviewed, he said, “Every GTA, except for one, has launched in October.I actually think the Rockstar guys would have preferred to launch [GTA 5] this October. I don’t know that they are going to try and get in the way of BioShock Infinite, which is a February launch, Rockstar probably aren’t even aware BioShock is coming out, nor do they care. Take Two is on the hook to deliver over a billion dollars in revenue. Their fiscal year, ends March 31, so they pretty much have to bring the game out by March 31. I would say a March launch is more likely than May and knowing the Rockstar guys, I wouldn’t rule out a December [2012] launch. You just don’t know with these guys, they could announce next week that GTA is coming out December 20, I think it would be stupid, but they could do it.”

What do you think of Pachter’s observation? Is it in line with what you have in mind, or do you think that there will be a different release date overall?

Canon EOS-1D X DSLR gets new firmware update

Canon has just announced that they will be introducing a new firmware update for their flagship EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera. With the latest firmware update, the EOS-1D X will be able to handle AF point illumination during AI Servo AF and cross-type AF for maximum apertures which are as small as f/8. Not only that, to sweeten the deal, this new firmware update can be downloaded for free over at the Canon U.S.A. website as well as via Canon Factory Service Centers.

When you are shooting weddings, portraits, sports, wildlife, and theatrical performance, photographers tend to work in low light conditions, and this new firmware update paves the way for AF points in the EOS-1D X’s viewfinder to be illuminated in red whenever the shutter button is pressed halfway during AI Servo AF, making it far easier to view the selected point in a jiffy. This valuable feature enhances the photographers’ ability to aim the camera accurately under such conditions, and exposure-metering accuracy will be maintained as illumination is intermittent instead of continuous. Have you downloaded the firmware update already? [Press Release]

Razer gives away custom Star Wars-themed Blade, may turn friends Imperial Guard red with envy

Razer gives away custom Star Warsthemed Blade, may turn friends Imperial Guard red with envy

Razer has been big on Star Wars gaming gear, but never quite like this. Enter a free contest and there’s a chance to win a completely unique Star Wars: The Old Republic version of Razer’s Blade gaming laptop. The winner sees the system’s normally black shell replaced with a matte, laser-etched aluminum gray and the green backlighting dropped in favor of a subtler yellow matched to the MMORPG logo. Anyone who brings out this portable at a bring-your-own-computer gaming party is inevitably going to be the center of attention, although we have a feeling some would almost prefer the second-place bundle of peripherals — at an estimated worth of $15,000, the Star Wars Blade might be too precious to carry for all but the most well-heeled of fans.

Latest Google Play store update rolling out now, wishlists in tow

DNP Latest Google Play store update rolling out now, wishlists in tow

If you’re indecisive about that pricey but hard-to-find new app, Google Play will now be offering another option in its store — you can put it aside in a wishlist until you make up your mind. That new feature (which was espied in recent teardowns) is hitting devices now on a per-account basis, and if you have it (version 3.9.16) you’ll notice a bookmark icon near the top right of the screen when you load up an app page. When you tap that icon, the software will be added to your wishlist, which can be scoped from the menu button with the “My Wishlist” setting, saving you the trouble of searching it out later. Depending on your Android device’s settings, you may already have it or were notified of its availability — if so, happy shopping.

Microsoft sells out of $499 Surface RT pre-orders

Microsoft’s Surface tablet has generated a massive buzz over the last few weeks, culminating in the lowest priced option, the $499 32GB tablet sans-cover, having already sold out in pre-orders. The device was opened to pre-orders yesterday, and is now backordered by three weeks. For now, the other two models are available for shipping on October 26th.

At first glance, this is a bit of a head-scratcher. The $499 model Surface doesn’t include the cover, which is a pressure sensitive keyboard that doubles as a trackpad. This essentially means that a whole lot of buyers purchased a rather expensive tablet running Windows RT, missing out on half of the Surface experience. It’s worth noting that the next model up includes a black cover, so it’s possible that many buyers elected to buy a different color cover separately. We also don’t know what Microsoft’s initial supply numbers were, throwing a variable into the mix.

The $599 Surface RT has 32GB of internal storage space, and includes a black cover. The $699 model features 64GB of internal storage sapce, and also includes a black cover. For those who want something a bit more colorful, a type cover can be purchased separately for $129.99 in blue, pink, or red. A white touch cover can be purchased for $119.99. The type cover resembles a normal laptop keyboard, and includes a full set of function keys.

Microsoft declined to offer specifics. When asked about the number of units sold, the spokesperson said, “No numbers to share, the $499 one is now on back order so that means the SKU is out but all three SKUs will be ready for launch day.” While time will tell whether the Surface ends up being a hit for Microsoft, it certainly is off to a good start.

Blue States Are From Scandinavia, Red States Are From Guatemala

This election, we’ve heard a lot about divisions that define America. First it was the 99 percent and the 1 percent. Then it was the moochers and the makers. Politicians, of course, love to claim that we are more than the sum of our differences, but the dividers actually have a point. In all kinds of real and practical ways, the United States today is not one nation, but two.

Alan Turing’s Mind, Life Honored During LGBT History Month (VIDEO)

June 23, 2012 marked the 100 year anniversary of mathematician and logician Alan Turing‘s birth. It was celebrated around the world in his honor. Alan Turing was a genius, a visionary, and a war hero. He developed a machine that cracked the German Enigma code during World War II, helping to end the war early, saving millions of lives. He has been called the father of computer science and artificial intelligence. His Turing Machine was one of the earliest models of a modern computer, illustrating the simple and brilliant logic necessary for algorithmic processing.

Alan Turing was also gay. And in post-war England, this was a crime. He was unafraid to live his life the only way he knew how, and his tragic end is a testament to his strength and character. In honor of LGBT history month, join me in celebrating the life of Alan Turing.
