Rafael Soriano Leaving Yankees? Reliever Opts Out Of Contract

Rafael Soriano is poised to leave the New York Yankees, Ervin Santana is headed to Kansas City and Ryan Ludwick plans to test the open market.

Soriano opted out of the final year of his $35 million, three-year contract Wednesday and will likely seek a long-term deal in free agency. The right-hander had 42 saves for the Yankees last season after longtime closer Mariano Rivera tore knee ligaments in early May.

Exercise Could Improve Your Brain Functioning, Study Suggests

What’s good for the body is good for the brain.

Findings presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress show the brain-boosting effects of just four months of exercise.

“It’s reassuring to know that you can at least partially prevent that [cognitive] decline by exercising and losing weight,” study researcher Dr. Martin Juneau, director of prevention of the Montreal Heart Institute, said in a statement.

Chuck Todd On Hurricane Sandy: ‘It’s Called Climate Change’ (VIDEO)

NBC political director Chuck Todd issued a strong statement on the forces behind Hurricane Sandy on Wednesday, attributing the recent frequency in severe storms to climate change.

“Second year in a row the New York Metro area hit by this stuff,” Todd said during MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown.” “Let’s not bury our heads in the sand when it comes to — something has changed in the Atlantic. The climate has changed. It’s called climate change, folks.”

Hurricane Sandy’s devastating impact on the East Coast, particularly New Jersey and New York, has reawakened the national discussion on global warming and how climate change has impacted weather patterns. Climate change experts warn that rising sea levels spurred by global warming trends are likely to exacerbate extreme weather events like Sandy.

T-Mobile says its Nexus 4 won’t provide WiFi calling, makes a stronger case for going unlocked

TMobile says its Nexus 4 won't handle WiFi calling, makes stronger case for going unlocked

T-Mobile has already made an odd pair of decisions around its approach to the Nexus 4, namely its choices to ask $200 on contract and $500 up-front for a smartphone that costs $349 unlocked. It might be time to add a third quirk to the list, if a forgivable (and not entirely surprising) one. The carrier has confirmed to TmoNews that it won’t be offering WiFi calling through its edition of Google’s flagship; if cost or coverage makes cellular voice a scarce resource, VoIP might be the only viable backup. We weren’t assuming that T-Mobile would suddenly layer the Nexus 4 in custom features when the very point is to run an unspoiled Android 4.2, but the strategy leaves us even less of an incentive to submit to long-term commitments when a virtually identical, unfettered Google Play model beckons. November 13th is looking better every day.

Ouya enters Engineering Verification Testing phase, now running Jelly Bean

Ouya, the revolutionary gaming console that became one of the most successful projects ever to debut in Kickstarter, is making a steady progress so far. Julie Uhrman, the driving force behind Ouya, announced that the team has been busy refining the hardware design of the gaming console. Just last week, the team  got its first development run of PCBs and its engineers were able to squeeze all the quad-core goodness into the small printed circuit boards. Uhrman also announced that Ouya is now in the Engineering Verification Testing (EVT) phase, which means that the team are now testing the console and its controller on the software.

“We’re set to complete this EVT phase on time, and we’re in sync with our December target for developer kits,” she added. But the good news doesn’t stop there. The team is also happy to announce that Ouya will be running the latest Android operating system – Jelly Bean. Apparently the team is keen to ensure that the “one-of-a-kind” video gaming console is running the latest Android operating system. We still don’t know if it’s actually Android 4.1 or Android 4.2.

Stolen cellphone database goes live in the US

Cell phones, smartphones in particular, have this unfortunate combination of high cost and ease-of-theft. Once a cell phone is snatched, it can easily be used by swapping out the SIM card with a new one, at which point identifying the phone as stolen becomes all but impossible. To help curb this problem, a database of stolen cell phones has been launched in the U.S.

Back in April, we reported that the FCC and wireless carriers were joining forces to create a national database for zapping stolen phones into serviceable gadgets. Part of that database is now live, and works by blocking the stolen cell phone’s IMEI number, making it impossible to get service. AT&T and T-Mobile have both launched a joint database that blocks stolen phones, while Verizon and Sprint are slated to launch their own databases soon.

By the end of November 2013, the four major carriers will merge their databases, with smaller carriers joining in, to create a unified system for targeting and blocking stolen phones. Also in the plans is joining the national database with an international one to block stolen phone use overseas. “The goal is to not only protect the consumer by cancelling the service, but by ultimately protecting the consumer by drying up the after market for stolen phones,” said CTIA Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Chris Guttman-McCabe.

Consumers are also being encouraged to join in the anti-smartphone theft task. Cell phone users advised to use PINs or passwords with lock their phones, and to enable remote wiping capabilities. “Consumers also play a key role in protecting their information and preventing smartphone theft. By using passwords or PINs, as well as remote wiping capabilities, consumers can help to dry up the aftermarket for stolen devices.”

Screen Grabs Microsoft Surface goes to work on NCIS LA

Just in case its dance moves weren’t enough to move buyers, Microsoft’s new slate is popping up in TV shows themselves, like tonight’s episode of NCIS: LA. As seen in the clip, character Eric Beale confidently flips his Windows RT-powered Surface out (and naturally, makes use of its kickstand and Touch Cover — gotta hit all the check boxes) to figure out what’s going on and even multitasks with some simulated videoconferencing. All in all it’s more realistic than when the other Microsoft Surface made a cameo in CSI: Miami (also included after the break), and is probably worth the promo fee by showing a use case enabled thanks to those features — of course, with no cell access built-in, it’s not immediately clear how he got online, but this is TV. So who did it better, tablet-style: this one, the PlayBook on White Collar, Cisco’s ill-fated Cius on NCIS: LA last year or the iPad in Entourage?

[Thanks, Mitchell]

iPad mini has stereo speakers, confirms Apple executive

Now that’s a turn up for the books! Speculations about the iPad mini’s built-in speaker setup are all over the Internet. Amazon even tried to criticize the 7.9-inch tablet by launching a ballsy advert comparing the Kindle Fire HD and its dual-stereo speakers to the iPad mini’s presumed mono speakers. But an Apple fan who goes by the name Alex got tired of the comparisons and decided to email Apple VP for Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, instead.

“I understand the tech specs about iPad Mini online should cover everything, but the tech specs online neither confirm or deny the rumors of iPad Mini’s speakers being stereo. Is it possible to get confirmation from the man himself as to whether these are mono or stereo?” he asked. Surprisingly, the Apple executive responded with an absolute yes. “It is stereo,” Schiller replied. (more…)
