CloudOn announces new features, worldwide availability on iOS and Android

Having already conquered over 70 countries in its relatively short history, CloudOn decided it was now time to make its handy cloud-based tools available to all Android and iOS users around the globe. Aside from announcing its worldwide invasion, CloudOn’s also outed version 2.5 of its application on Google and Apple’s mobile platforms, bringing with it a slew of new traits into the mix — among these are a FileSpace for “real-time context around any document,” the ability to add single-tap annotations to Word, Excel or PowerPoint files, an all-new ribbon that’s enhanced for tablet use and, naturally, universal language support. It’s worth noting that while all of these novel features will be available on Android / iOS at some point, the former two are currently only compatible with Cupertino’s devices — however, CloudOn has told us the missing goods will be making their way to the other side very soon. We’re not exactly sure when that’s going to be, but if you’re still interested in grabbing the app, you’ll find the necessary download links below.

This Eagle-Eyed Heron UAV Can See From Tel Aviv to Cyprus [Video]

The Israeli Air Force has been utilizing UAVs ever since the IAI Scout first flew during the 1982 Lebanon War. Over the last 30 years, Israel’s rickety Reagan-era drones have been steadily upgraded into a world-class unmanned aerial fleet. And last Sunday, the IAF unveiled the newest upgrade to its Heron 1 (Shoval) drone, radar capable of identifying targets 300km away. More »

Cocaine Vaccine – Curing Addiction in One Shot?

Drug addiction is a plague on society, watching someone succumb to an addiction is a horrible thing. Tearing apart families and causing untold amounts of physical and emotional pain. It must take a tremendous amount of emotional strength to fully recover from something like a true addiction. Luckily, I can’t imagine being in a situation like that, but what if someone I loved was? What would I do then?

Well, it seems that behind the scenes, researchers have been working not only on vaccines that may be effective against certain forms of cancer, but they have also been working on vaccines that might be able to cure addiction. One such vaccine, developed to combat cocaine addiction, has been developed by teams led by Ronald Crystal from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, and could very well be the first of a new line of anti-addiction shots that use proteins of from our immune systems (or antibodies)  that can attach to the dangerous molecules, and mark them for destruction by our white blood cells, blocking the action of the drug before it hits our brains.

These anti-cocaine antibodies stop the drug before it crosses into the brain and researches say that this is important because cocaine’s addictive properties and physiological effects are all created in the brain. If any of these approaches turn out to work in human trials, researchers may be able to develop vaccines against heroin, nicotine and many other addictions. Trials so far have shown success in primates with results lasting for up to four months and human trials for some of these vaccines may begin as early as next year.

Flies send tweets via Flytweet

David Bowen must have quite the vivid imagination to come up with this rather nifty contraption that he calls the “Flytweet”. Basically, the Flytweet’s name gives the game away already, where it functions as a device which is capable of sending out tweets for those who are interested to know what’s going on, and these tweets will be based on what the house flies have been up to. Now, there really isn’t much that a common house fly can do other than to being a nuisance of itself while contaminating all of our favorite foods that were left uncovered, right?

The Flytweet comprises of an enclosed acrylic sphere with a keyboard, and this area will be where a bunch of house flies congregate. The flies will be filmed as they move around, and each time they land on a particular key, that character will be entered into a Twitter text box. Once the 140 characters limit is reached, or should a fly land on the Enter key, a tweet will be sent from @flycolony. Entirely random, let us see if it can compose the whole works of Shakespeare instead of leaving it to the monkeys and a typewriter.

V-MODA Crossfade M-100 crowdsourced headphones blast forth

Today is the day that V-MODA reveals their next big hit with the Crossfade M-100 metal, customizable, over-ear headphones to add to their fabulous series of audio products we’ve had a peek at more than once. This new design features a “crowdsourced” set of features made by V-MODA’s “collective brain trust of audiophiles, editors, producers, and DJs”, here bringing together what the company assures is their most powerful set of blasters yet. This release works with what V-MODA says is “the most unique design process” they’ve ever made happen.

The M-100 will be rocking forth with 50mm Dual-Diaphragm Drivers (patent-pending) as well as a completely real sound – no artificial sound processing, that is. You’ve got dual-inputs with the group’s own V-CORK seals (also patent-pending) with a package that includes two kevlar-reinforced cables (not unlike their previous releases). This is included in an exoskeleton case that we’ve also praised in the past, ready to keep your headphones secure and safe when you travel.

“This collaboration is one of the most unique design processes I’ve ever been a part of. Once the word started to spread on M-100, forum discussions exploded with exceptional feedback vital to the development of the product. Our research and development labs consisted not of corporate marketing and finance departments, but rather the most passionate headphone consumers, musicians and DJs across the globe. M-100 is a progeny of audio enthusiasts worldwide – truly built by the people, for the people.” – Val Kolton, Chief Visionary Officer at V-MODA

This release includes a SharePlay extended audio cable as well as a universally compatible SpeakEasy microphone cable that will work with the iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and Windows devices of all kinds. The folding mechanism that makes these headphones unique on another level is what they call CLIQFOLD – we’ll see how that works in person soon enough. These headphones also come with a variety of quality assurances.

MIL-STD-810G and V-MODA Quality

• Survives 70+ drops on concrete
• Virtually indestructible SteelFlex Headband
• Minimal sound variances from unit to unit checked along six parts of the sound curve versus 10-30dB+ of inferior products
• Kevlar-reinforced detachable cables and 45-degree plug strain relief can each bend more than 1 million times, over 100x industry standards
• MIL-STD-810G environmental tests including high and low temperatures, humidity, salt spray and UV exposure

You’ll be able to pick up the V-MODA Crossfade M-100 package rather soon for $300 USD in Matte Black Metal, Shadow, or White Silver from retailers nationwide. If you pick up the pre-order set from V-MODA.com for $310, you can get an extra set of personalized shields (the metal bit that sits in the middle outside of the phones) as well as a set of Faders VIP Tuned Earplugs. Grab em all!

Have a peek at our timeline of V-MODA products below in a variety of reviews and let us know if you plan on picking up the M-100 package too!

Photoshop Contest: Let’s Destroy Some Livestrong Bracelets [Cut N Paste]

So Lance Armstrong is an official doper. Big deal; apparently everyone doped back then. (I’ve always suspected his name was fake as well—it’s just too perfect.) But now Nike dumped Lance in the sleaziest way possible, and Livestrong, deprived of its cancer-survivor spokesjock and defiled by Nike being shitty about the whole thing, is a joke. Nike sucks, Lance sucks, and there are plenty of other awesome charities to support. More »

Belkin announces WeMo Baby monitor for iOS devices

Baby monitors certainly aren’t a new technology by any means — they’ve been around for years. However, they’re becoming more and more advanced, and are incorporating modern technology to make them easier to use and more convenient. Belkin is taking it a step further by branching out its WeMo line of home automation switches and introducing the WeMo Baby.

The WeMo Baby is nothing more than a very high-tech version of the normal baby monitor that you already know and love. The device has a microphone that transmits audio from your baby’s room to your iOS device. It supports up to six iOS devices simultaneously as long as you’re connected to a WiFi network.

The device comes with an accompanying iOS app for free. The app works over 3G, 4G or WiFi which means that parents can check in on their baby when they’re away from home, although we’re not sure why parents would leave their baby at home. Then again, there’s probably a time and place where the remote ability of the app can come in handy.

Parents can also go for the optional premium service that adds cry notifications through text messages or email, as well as an analysis of your baby’s sleep patterns. The service costs $10 per month, or $60 per year. The Belkin WeMo Baby will cost $90 and is expected to go on sale early next month.

Nissan to offer steer-by-wire systems in some Infiniti cars

Nissan to offer steerbywire systems in some Infinity cars

We’re all at least somewhat familiar with fly-by-wire, the electronic piloting system found in most modern planes. Nissan wants to bring the same tech to cars, leaving behind the purely mechanical solutions currently used to take turns in your four-wheeler. The first automobiles to come equipped with steer-by-wire would be luxury sedans from Infiniti. Other companies have incorporated the tech into concept vehicles, but Nissan would be the first to stick it in a production model. The company plans to have the first drive-by-wire cars in consumer garages by the end of next year, with an eye towards a future in which you drive from the back seat using a joystick. Of course, the lack of direct feedback as your tires turn over the road may lead some to cling tight to their mechanical steering apparatus, though, moving to a digital steering system should lead to better handling vehicles.

Bethesda: Avoid Doom 3 BFG Edition on your Xbox 360 like the plague

Bethesda already has issues for quite some time already with the non-appearance of Skyrim: Dawnguard DLC on the PS3, and this time around, the developer has warned Xbox 360 owners to not install Doom 3 BFG Edition on their respective console’s hard drive. The reason behind this seemingly backward request? Word has it that Bethesda is aware of a strange bug for the Xbox 360 version of Doom 3 BFG Edition which affects folks who installed the game on the Xbox 360’s hard drive, which results in the system being unable to access the bonus Doom or Doom 2 titles.

Bethesda Global Community Lead Matt Grandstaff said, “If you choose to install the game to the Xbox 360 hard drive, you will not be able to launch Doom or Doom 2. As their [sic] is no performance advantage to installing the game to your hard drive, we recommend not installing the game to avoid this issue.”

No idea on whether Doom 3 BFG Edition will be updated in due time with a squashed bug, but it is rather disturbing to know that such an old game that is nearly two decades old still runs into issues when ported onto a modern day platform.
