Float Beijing project helps monitor air quality index in Beijing

The kite-flying tradition that hailed from ancient China has a new lease of life, as it has resulted in a new tool that citizens can use for monitoring air quality all over Beijing. This project is the collaboration between a Chinese graduate student and a graduate student from the US, where it was inspired from the controversy surrounding statistics of China’s air pollution. Known as the “Float Beijing” project, its kites will not only brighten up the sky, but also carry air pollution sensors in addition to colorful LED lights that depict the current levels of air quality. It follows the universal color scheme for sure just like a traffic light, where green stands for good, yellow for moderate, and red for unhealthy. Strangely enough, there is a shade of pink that stands for severely unhealthy.

According to Deren Guler, a Master’s candidate in tangible interaction design at Carnegie Mellon University, “The sensors were pretty easy to mount to the kites. The kites’ flyers helped us with that and we were able to find the best place after a few tests.” I guess this is a way to really know just how clean or polluted Beijing’s air quality is compared to official reports from the government that tend to lean towards the sunny side of things.

HTC J Butterfly 5-inch 1080p smartphone unveiled in Japan

Rumors have abounded since early August of an HTC smartphone in the works that features a 5-inch, 1080p display. In the original DigiTimes report, a source had stated that the device would be launched in September or October. That time has finally come, with HTC announcing the J Butterfly smartphone in Japan while showing off its best feature: the 5-inch full HD Super LCD 3 display.

The J Butterfly’s display features a 440ppi resolution, which is simply outstanding. Current pictures floating around showing an up-close comparison between the iPhone 5 and J Butterfly’s screen show an obvious difference in the J’s favor, as should be expected from the 1920×1080 resolution. The display is fitted nicely within a thin bezel.

Aside from the display, the J Butterfly features the same red/black coloring of the HTC J. Inside the device, you’ll find 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, microSD card slot and a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor. There’s also an 8MP rear camera, which can take still images up to 3280×2464, and record videos in 1080p. The battery has a 2,020mAh capacity.

The J Butterfly is a Japan-only model, but HTC has been quoted as having said that the beautiful display found in this phone will be showing up in other handsets in various markets. The device is slated for release in early December, although a specific date wasn’t provided. Currently, the HTC Japan website just says “Coming Soon”.

GoPro Hero3 action camera hands-on

GoPro Hero3 action camera handson

GoPro just revealed its new flagship action camcorder, the Hero3, and we managed to get our mitts on one this evening. First things first, the Hero3 is tiny, particularly when considering that it shoots 4K video (albeit at a paltry 12fps), a resolution usually reserved for much larger, cinematic cameras. Having handled its competition recently — the Action Cam from Sony and the Contour+2 — we can say that the Hero3 feels smaller and lighter than both of them. It’s about the size of a couple of matchboxes stacked together and is quite lightweight, yet still feels sturdy. The textured plastic exterior is finger friendly, and the big round power / mode and record buttons give a reassuring snick with every press. The WiFi remote that comes with the Hero3 Black Edition is similarly solid in its construction, though we wish it had the same textured skin as the camera instead of its smooth exterior. We didn’t get to use the Hero3 for its stated purpose just yet, but we’ll be filming with the thing tomorrow, so stay tuned for all the POV footage. In the meantime, feel free to enjoy a tour of GoPro’s new diminutive hardware and check out its first sample video after the break.

Never paint a building ever again

Concrete jungles need to be maintained every few years with a fresh coat of paint, otherwise the scene would look like something out of a zombie apocalypse. Well, science had always drawn inspiration from nature, and this time around, it is a pair of butterfly wings that proved to be the impetus for a new material that not only repels water, but gleams with brilliant color (hmmm, qualities of Edward the vampire, perhaps?) Similar to iridescent butterflies, this particular material relies on tiny structures on its surface in order to achieve both qualities. Such a material could eventually be advanced to a stage where it sees action in sensors that regulate the interior temperature of “smart buildings. ” Taking into account minuscule bumps on butterfly wings that cause any water that hits the wing to form beads and roll away, such a concept also means there is no chance of dirt sticking to the wings – and in this case, a building.

The ultimate goal? An entire city of energy-efficient buildings, which is something bustling metropolises need these days. Of course, this material could also be used on the outside of buildings in order to deliver colorful designs which are more durable compared to conventional paint, resisting dirt and mildew in the process.

Asante Samuel Taunts Eagles’ Andy Reid On Twitter After Firing Of Juan Castillo (TWEETS)

With his Atlanta Falcons boasting a 6-0 record and the team that dumped him in disarray, cornerback Asante Samuel would seem to be enjoying the sort of revenge that Frank Sinatra so famously recommended: massive success.

But he seems not to have been able to resist the urge to tweak the Philadelphia Eagles as their recent tailspin resulted in the firing of defensive coordinator Juan Castillo on Tuesday. The former Eagles corner, now on the Falcons, fired off a pair of tweets easily interpreted as criticism of Philadelphia head coach Andy Reid.
