Stargate Wedding Ring Spins You into a Whole New World

I love sci-fi, but I just never understood all of the hype about the Stargate franchise. I’m more a Star Trek or Babylon 5 kind of guy. Sure, it’s ok. I don’t think it’s great sci-fi. (No throwing stuff at me.) That’s probably why I wasn’t invited to any Stargate themed weddings.

stargate ring

The Chapa’ai ring you see here was conceived by Seattle-based company Wedding Band Designs. The coolest feature is that the inner ring spins like a real stargate, without the need for visual effects. If you still have Flash running on your computer, you can even check it out in action below:

It’s made from 14K white gold with the chevrons made from 18K yellow gold. The Chapa’ai ring is available as a custom piece only, and you’ll need to contact Wedding Band Designs for a price quote.

It’s an appropriate ring for marriage since you are certainly stepping into a strange new world.

Apple event invites lead to stock jump

In case you missed it, Apple started sending out invites to a press event on October 23 today. The company isn’t talking about what it will reveal during the event, but we have a pretty good idea – there’s a good chance that Apple will finally announce the long-rumored iPad Mini. It seems that investors are seeing this as a good sign, as Apple’s stock was on the rise after news of those invites hit.

This is, of course, good news for Apple, as the company’s stock has taken a hit since the release of the iPhone 5 late last month. The Los Angeles Times reports that Apple’s stock has tumbled 10% since the iPhone 5 launched, mainly because of stock shortages that are preventing the company from keeping up with demand. Concern over working conditions at Foxconn factories in China also appear to have something to do with the stock decline, and indeed, Foxconn certainly has been getting a lot of negative press lately.

But today, Apple’s stock appears to be on the rebound, climbing $15.03 to end the day at $649.79 per share. That’s a 2.37% gain for the day, though it is worth pointing out that Apple’s stock has slipped ever so slightly in after hours trading, coming down 0.18%, or $1.18. Still, any day when gains are made is a good day, and you can bet that Apple is hoping this upward trend continues as we head toward October 23.

The iPad Mini should align Apple to directly compete with the extremely popular Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, provided the rumors we’ve been hearing are true. If Apple hits the nail on the head with the iPad Mini, then you can bet investors will reward the company with another surge in stock price. Apple better be careful though, because if the supply of iPad Minis can’t keep up with consumer demand, it may find itself in a similar situation once again.

Facebook expands AV Marketplace with 7 new partners

Nearly six months ago, Facebook launched the AV Marketplace, offering users access to antivirus applications. This morning, the company announced a deal with seven new partners: avast!, AVG, Avira, Panda, Kaspersky, Webroot, and Total Defense. In addition, Facebook’s existing partners McAfree, Norton, TrendMicro, Microsoft, and Sophos, are also now providing antivirus apps for mobile devices.

For PC users, the AV Marketplace offers Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2013 (free), avast! Free Edition, Avira (free), a 6-month subscription to McAfee Internet Security, a free trial of Norton AntiVirus, Total Defense Free with Free Cloud-Based Security Assessment, AVG Free 2013, Microsoft Security Essentials, a free 6-month subscription to Webroot SecureAnywhere 2013, a free subscription to Kaspersky PURE Total Security, and a 6-month subscription for Panda Internet Security 2013. Mac users can download Kaspersky Security for Mac, avast! Free Edition, Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2013, a free trial of Norton, Avira (free), and Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition (free). Android users can grab either McAfee Mobile Security or Norton Mobile Security Lite for Android.

This is the latest move from Facebook on increasing user security. The company recently implemented a series of phishing protection mechanisms, as well as the launch of phish@fb.com, where users can report phishing attempts. In July, the company also launched malware checkpoints, and is using a URL blacklist system, which scans links and compares them with their partners’ databases to verify that they aren’t malicious.

According to Facebook’s announcement, “Effective security must be a cooperative effort; by adding these new partners to the Facebook Security family we are sure we can keep our community even better protected from threats both on Facebook and elsewhere on the web.” The company plans to announce new tools in the future. The products from these seven new partners, plus the new mobile apps, are available for download now.

NuForce launches $300 Bluetooth 4.0 bookshelf speakers, promises to please audiophiles

NuForce launches Bluetooth 40 bookshelf speakers, promises to please audiophiles

NuForce has just launched the NuForce S3-BT, a line of high-quality bookshelf speakers that tout Bluetooth 4.0 as one of its main selling points. Most Bluetooth speakers tend to pale in comparison to their analog counterparts, but NuForce is confident its apt-x and AAC codecs will provide CD-quality audio even to the most discerning audiophile. If you’re unconvinced, NuForce has also included a set of analog inputs plus the company’s own Air DAC wireless system for slightly higher quality audio streaming. The powered speakers have a 3.5-inch bass driver and a 1-inch tweeter each, and the woofer touts a proprietary anti-resonance cone. If you care about looks, the speakers are wrapped in either soft white or black leatherette. They aren’t cheap — a pair will cost you $300 — but for attractive high-fidelity speakers that won’t contribute to your home’s existing nest of wires, it may well be worth it.
