Hurricane Sandy Bypasses Virginia, Leaving No Edge For Candidates

COLONIAL BEACH, Va. — If Hurricane Sandy was going to have an impact on next week’s presidential election, the swing state of Virginia would seem a likely a place to look.

But on Tuesday, as relieved residents of this resort town on the coast returned to their normal lives having largely escaped the wrath of the storm, any potential political fallout appeared muted.

“We’re just happy this one didn’t get so crazy,” said Julie Sanford, a waitress at Wilkerson’s Seafood restaurant, as she served a single customer in a booth facing the swollen Potomac River.

Pat Summitt Departure Creates SEC Uncertainty

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference begins the first year of the post-Pat Summitt era in an unfamiliar situation.

Tennessee, the eight-time national champion and longtime conference heavyweight, isn’t favored to win the league. The Lady Vols aren’t even considered among the top few contenders.

The Lady Vols don’t return anyone who started an NCAA tournament game last year during their run to a regional final. That creates opportunity for the rest of the SEC, which is seeking to produce its first Final Four team since Tennessee won the national title and LSU reached the semifinals in 2008. Texas A&M won the 2011 national championship when it was still a Big 12 member.

WASHINGTON — A sting of vitriol-laden text messages hit voters’ phones Tuesday night, blasting President Barack Obama with anti-gay attacks and false claims.

In what appeared to be a coordinated campaign of cell phone text mail or text messages, one Virginia voter received one from the address sms@votegopett.com that made the inflammatory claim: “Obama supports homosexuality and its radical social agenda. Say No to Obama on Nov 6!”

MIke Madden tweeted one for sms@informedett.com that declared “Re-electing Obama puts Medicare at risk.”

Hurricane Sandy takes down 25% of cell towers in 10 states

Telecom companies have reported that 25% of cell towers have been knocked out in 10 states in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. In addition, 25% of cable services have also been lost in those states, although landline outages are reported to be “far fewer.” Emergency calls are currently being rerouted to different call centers, according to the FCC.

According to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, only a very small number of 911 call centers have been impacted by the storm. Thus far, no numbers have been given on how many customers have been affected by the various outages. Sadly, the situation is expected to worsen in the coming days. The National Hurricane Center is reporting storm surge advisories until 4AM November 2.

Said Genachowski, “The storm is not over. And our assumption is that communications outages could get worse before they get better, particularly for mobile networks because of the flooding and loss of power.” It is estimated that 7 to 8 million people are without power. Some systems are currently running on generators, and could also go out if not catered to before the backup power goes down.

Several wireless carriers and cable providers have reported outages and various other problems, including the big names like Verizon and Time Warner. Several websites have also experienced outages, including Buzzfeed and The Huffington Post. Consumers are being urged to avoid non-essential mobile use, reserving calls and text messages for emergency communication only.
