Chinese Like U.S. Democracy Ideas More, Says Survey

BEIJING — People in China are increasingly worried about corruption, inequality and food safety, according to a survey released Tuesday that also found that about half of Chinese like American ideas about democracy.

The Pew Global Attitudes Project report on attitudes in China said that citizens have become far more concerned about domestic quality-of-life issues over the past four years.

One Million Moms is at again: They’re still not done with “The New Normal” (Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET on NBC).

The NBC comedy poked fun at the anti-gay organization’s boycott of the series in last week’s episode when Ellen Barkin’s homophobic character uttered the words, “I need the help of every one of you future One Million Moms.”

OMM has released statement on their website claiming that “The New Normal” actually portrayed them in a positive light.

Malawi Orphaned Baby Elephant Raised By Human Mom (PHOTOS)

LILONGWE, Malawi (AP) — Lots of mothers wake in the middle of the night to feed their babies, but not many get up to give a bottle to an infant elephant.

Jenny Webb adopted a baby boy elephant who was just a few weeks old in February. The orphaned elephant calf was named Moses after being found in the grasses of a riverbed by game rangers at Vwazi Wildlife Reserve in northern Malawi.

Rangers tried to find his family herd for two days without success, said the 48-year-old Webb, adding that the calf’s mother was likely killed by elephant poachers. The illegal killing of elephants is rife in Africa, with conservation groups saying that tens of thousands of elephants are being killed each year for their ivory tusks.

Mike Morrell, California Legislator, Says Government ‘Should Be Shot’

A Republican state legislator in California is being criticized by his Democratic opponent for saying at a church conference late last month that government “should be shot.”

Assemblyman Mike Morrell (R-San Bernardino County) used a 50-minute lecture to the Christian Principle Resource Conference on Sept. 29 to outline his views on government and the non-profit sector, along with sharing his views as a Christian in government. During the lecture Morrell touched on how government manages tax dollars.

“Government picks winners and losers. So what I decided to do in California; study how good of a job does government do with our tax money in helping the poor,” Morrell said. “Somehow I don’t think you guys think they do very well. Well, let me tell ya. Let me tell ya. It ain’t very good. I mean, it’s … they should be shot.”

EU Gives Google Four Months To Amend Privacy Policy

By Gwénaëlle Barzic and Leila Abboud

PARIS (Reuters) – Google has four months to make its privacy policy comply with requests from European Union data protection watchdogs or start facing the possibility of disciplinary action at a national level.

France’s Commission Nationale de l’Informatique, working on behalf of the EU’s 27 national data regulators, said on Tuesday it had found legal flaws with a new approach to user data that Google adopted in March.

Among CNIL’s concerns was the way the U.S. group combines anonymous data from users’ browsing histories across its services to better target advertising.

That led the national regulators to issue 12 recommendations for Google to bring its privacy policy into line, including better informing users on how data will be used, and setting precise periods for data to be retained.

Google global privacy counsel Peter Fleischer said the company would examine the results of the investigation, adding it remained confident its privacy policy respected EU law.

CNIL president Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin said regulators were prepared to talk to Google, adding: “If Google does not conform in the allotted time, we will enter into the disciplinary phase”.

Google can either negotiate with the regulators and change elements of its privacy policy or challenge their authority to impose changes in court. The data protection watchdogs that examined the privacy policy cannot rule on the legality of Google’s approach since they are not a court of law.

Some national data protection regulators including those in Belgium, France and the Netherlands have, in the past, imposed fines on companies that have breached rules. Such sanctions cannot be imposed EU-wide.

When Google was found to have broken data protection rules after its Street View cars collected unauthorized data on public wifi networks in 2010, it faced dozens of separate cases.

In that episode, Google was fined 100,000 euros ($129,000)by the French watchdog and the Netherlands threatened a 1 million euro fine if it did not change its policy.

Google’s new approach to data, which consolidated 60 privacy policies into one, allows the pooling of information collected on individual users across its services, including YouTube, Gmail and the Google+ social network. Users cannot opt out.

Jacob Kohnstamm, the Dutch data protection boss and head of the working group of EU data protection regulators, said it was the first time regulators had cooperated on an investigation.

“Since internet companies know no borders, it is indispensable that data protection work together,” he said.

Chris Watson, a lawyer at CMS Cameron McKenna LLP, said: “How the case turns out will be an important test case of Europe’s (EU) ability to enforce its point of view on online privacy”.

Alfa cardboard bike set for full production

This month an inventor by the name of Izhar Gafni has shown off his “Alfa” bicycle made of cardboard, one he says has the potential to change transportation as we know it. This vehicle is heading to mass production in just a few months and has been demonstrated by the inventor on several occasions. After four years – or so he says – of working on negating the weak points in the structure of traditional cardboard, Gafni says he’s done it, and it’s time to ride paper around the city.

Cardboard is traditionally made of wood pulp, just as paper is, and was invented back in the 19th century to work as sturdy packaging for the shipping of valuable objects. Here in the final form – or near-final form of the bike, no metal pieces will be included in its entirety, it instead relying solely on recycled materials to go forth and cruise. The cardboard that makes this bike a possibility is created with a top-secret set of processes and combinations of treatments that make it rigid, fireproof, and waterproof.

With the “secret concoction” made of entirely organic materials set in the formed and cut cardboard, it’s coated with lacquer paint and set for final construction. Here with the final mix, the bike will cost no more than $20 to purchase on the general market. Gafni notes that the current construction process has each bike made with materials that cost no more than $9 per unit.

“This is a real game-changer. It changes … the way products are manufactured and shipped, it causes factories to be built everywhere instead of moving production to cheaper labor markets, everything that we have known in the production world can change.” – Nimrod Elmish, Gafni’s business partner

Oddly it appears that Elmish and Gafni intend on using advertising to make a profit – perhaps by having a collection of Coca-Cola bikes produced? This bit is not entirely clear at the moment.

“Because you get a lot of government grants, it brings down the production costs to zero, so the bicycles can be given away for free. We are copying a business model from the high-tech world where software is distributed free because it includes embedded advertising.” – Elmish

Here at the start of the process, three models of bicycle and a wheelchair are set to be available for purchase within a year. The partners intend on having an “urban bike” produced in six months that’s assisted by an electric motor (which would require metal), and a youth bike that’s 2/3 normal adult sized bikes. There’ll also be a “balanced” bike (with training wheels) for the youngest customers and a wheelchair for non-profit groups.
