Pokémon Eye Chart: Gotta See ‘Em All

Here’s a clever eye chart that replaces the letters with silhouettes of various Pokémon. It’s a bit deceptive though, because even if you have perfect vision you can’t catch them all. The bottom ones are more pixel monsters than pocket monsters. Then again the actual poster is 12″ x 18″ so maybe they’re all discernible there.

I bet Brock wouldn’t even be able to see Pikachu. Head to DesignNoy’s Etsy page and pay $12 (USD) to order the Pokémon eye chart.

Apple announces ‘Special Event’ for October 23rd — we’ll be there live!

Apple announces iPad mini launch event for October 23rd we'll be there live!

Apple has just invited members of the press to attend a product launch on October 23rd, where we assume the long-rumored iPad mini will be unveiled. The event will go down merely weeks after Apple took the wraps off of the iPhone 5 (and strangely enough, the Foo Fighters played their last show for the foreseeable future). It’s quite unlike Apple to throw two product parties in the fall, but if an entirely new iPad is being revealed, it may be a scenario that becomes more familiar in years to come. At this point, we’re left with far more questions than answers: will the iPad mini really ship with a Lightning port, while the Retina iPad — which was only introduced in March — continues to ship with the “old” Dock Connector? Will Apple really continue to refresh its two iPad products at different intervals? Will the (presumed) AT&T iPad mini actually include mobile hotspot functionality?

And while we’re at it, is Apple really going to throw a “one more thing” into the mix by bumping its 13-inch MacBook Pro into Retina territory? After all, tossing “little” into the invite could allude to a smaller iPad and an update to an already-small laptop. We’ll be there to bring you the blow-by-blow as it happens, so feel free to go ahead and take next Tuesday off. We’ll sign the approval form.

Puma AE: The Special Forces Spy Drone that Lands Anywhere [Video]

When scouting enemy positions, our forces rarely have the luxury of a proper airstrip—or even a fairway—with which to land an unmanned aircraft. That’s why California’s AeroVironment corporation has designed a drone that lands just about anywhere—water hazards and sand traps be damned. More »

ContourROAM2 debuts in red, blue, green and black garb, shoots 1080p video for $199 on October 21

Contour launches Roam2 in red, blue, green and black, shoots 1080p video for $199

The Contour+2 may well be the best digital action camcorder on the market (though Sony and GoPro would beg to differ), but the company knows not everyone wants a $400 shooter to capture their epic runs this ski season. Thus, Contour has introduced the ROAM2, a $199 model that records 1080p 30fps and 720p 60fps video on its included 4GB microSD card. Like the original Roam, it can capture clips up to one meter underwater without an external case, has a 270-degree rotating lens and a laser level to line up your shots. This new Roam, however, sports improved image quality and an aluminum skin of four colors: black, red and blue will be widely available, and green models can be had exclusively from Amazon through the end of the year (other retailers will carry it in 2013). Want one? Best Buy and other retailers will start selling them on October 21st.

The iPhone 5 Faces Off Against The Samsung Galaxy S III In The Most Important Arena – The Blender

WIB-iPhone STILL

It’s definitely on between Samsung and Apple, with the two are battling it out in consumer hearts, courts around the world, and in supply chain arrangements. But now, the company’s two flagship smartphones go head-to-head in that timeless venue, the blender. Blendtec, the blender company famous for pitting its home culinary equipment against valuable electronics, has just posted the video you see above, in which the Samsung Galaxy S III goes up against the iPhone 5 in a blend-off that can’t end well for either.

Yamaha makes powered wheelchairs more affordable with new power assist unit

Yesterday we took a look at a stunning new wheelchair concept that has the ability to climb stairs, but we probably won’t see it hit the market for a while and it’ll probably be really expensive. In the meantime, Yamaha has been working on a more practical solution that will make owning a powered wheelchair a lot more affordable.

Yamaha has come up with the JWX-2 power assist unit, which essentially turns any ordinary wheelchair into a powered wheelchair. Powered wheelchairs are extremely expensive, but the company says that their new power assist technology will be aimed at physically-disabled people who are on a budget.

Users will still have to manually control the wheels, but getting up slopes and just going long distances will be much easier. Plus, the unit can be attached to almost any regular wheelchair, which is one of the reasons why it’s cheaper than powered wheelchairs. The unit also comes with computer software, where users can adjust settings and even fine-tune each wheel to different power adjustments.

There are buttons on the side the turn off and turn on the assist, and you can even control how much power the unit offers depending on if you come up to a steep slope or just a gentle one. No price has been given for Yamaha’s JWX-2 power assist unit and it’s still in its developing stages, but the company said that you should expect it to hit the market sometime in the spring of 2013.

iTwin SecureBox adds hardware encryption to your Dropbox account

iTwin SecureBox adds hardware encryption to your Dropbox account

“The cloud,” you’ve probably heard about it by now. It’s this vast intangible place where you can put things. Things like emails and notes and files. But you’ve probably also heard about how vulnerable stuff in the cloud is and about how nefarious hackers can hijack your accounts to do terrible, terrible things with your data. Well, for the paranoid out there, iTwin is offering SecureBox, a hardware-based encryption system that can sync up with your Dropbox account. After plugging in your iTwin key you’ll be presented with the SecureBox folder — simply drag and drop your files there and they’ll be encrypted and uploaded. To view them again you’ll need one half of the iTwin and the AES 256-bit encryption key it contains. If you’re looking for even more security you can add an optional password, adding two-factor authentication to your SecureBox, which already lives behind DropBox’s own two-factor authentication system. You can pick up an iTwin yourself at the source for $99 or download the feature as a software update if you already have the prerequisite USB key.

Powered Pumice Stone – Not Your Mama’s Foot File

Our hands and feet give us away. Do we care for ourselves, are we older than we say? Have we worked hard all our lives, or been pampered? I guess because it’s a habit of mine to check peoples grooming, I tend to be a frequent mani-pedi person, and frankly that gets expensive, but if I want baby soft heels, to the salon I go.

Well our friends over at Hammacher Schlemmer may have an at home heel buffing option that might actually be worth the bucks. The Powered Pumice Stone, designed to remove the most hardcore dry skin and calluses from your otherwise pretty paws, the Powered Pumice Stone is actually a micro-mineral roller that spins at about 1800 RPM’s grinding down whatever thickened heel skin you have allowed your body to build up. Ew.

It looks a bit like an electric razor and comes with 2 different pumice rollers, a coarse one and one that’s extra coarse, yeah… you already know if you need that one. I look at it this way, no matter how bad you’re looking under those socks, you can get your feet ship shape by springtime. The Pumice Stone is powered by 2 AA batteries and only weighs around 6 ounces. So be good to your feet and get yours at Hammacher.com for only around 50 bucks, additional rollers are extra.

Foxconn confesses to underage employment

If one were to take the headline above in a more literal manner, you can say that a high school student had a say in how your iPhone or iPad was assembled, as Foxconn has confessed that they did employ underaged interns – especially those aged between 14 and 16. Foxconn’s statement mentioned, “An internal investigation carried out by our company has confirmed media reports in China that some participants in the short-term student internship program that is administered at our campus in Yantai, Shandong Province are under the legal working age of 16 years. This is not only a violation of China’s labor law, it is also a violation of Foxconn policy and immediate steps have been taken to return the interns in question to their educational institutions.”

Foxconn intends to carry out a full investigation, although we do wonder why not let a third party perform the investigation instead of doing an internal one, as the first option would definitely sound to be far less partial and more biased. It seems as though a lack in monitoring the IDs of the interns and running on assumption were the main causes of this oversight, although something of this oversight should not have happened in the first place, even if it is in China we are talking about. We do hope that things get sorted out as soon as possible though, it is for everyone’s good, and customers of Foxconn-assembled products can also sleep better at night knowing that the product they hold in their hands was ethically put together.
