Microsoft Surface tablet gets priced – starts at $499 and could be released 26th October

Microsoft SurfaceIf you don’t fancy iOS or Android as your tablet’s platform of choice, you might have been waiting for Windows 8 and the launch of the Microsoft Surface tablet. Unfortunately when Microsoft revealed the Surface, they did not mention how much it would cost, leading many to speculate about its price. Well it seems that the listing for the Surface tablet was spotted briefly on Microsoft’s online store before being taken now, but not before the folks at The Verge managed to grab some details, such as its pricing and release date which has been pegged for the 26th of October.

So what sort of prices are we looking at here? Well the Surface tablet will come in 32GB or 64GB options and starts at $499 for the 32GB model without the Touch Cover, $599 for the 32GB model with the Touch Cover, and $699 for the 64GB with the Touch Cover. For those who’d rather buy it without the Touch Cover at first, those customers can also expect to pick up the Touch Cover separately for $119.99 each, while the Type Cover will be sold separately for $129.99. We expect those prices to be officially revealed in the near future, but the in the meantime what do you guys think? Not too shabby, right?

Foxconn admits child labor laws breached by underage interns

Foxconn has admitted that it employed underage interns in breach of China’s child labor laws. An internal investigation at its Yantai factory found some of the young trainees were aged 14- and 15-years old (16 being the legal minimum). In a statement received by CNET, the company advised that “this is not only a violation of China’s labor law, it is also a violation of Foxconn policy and immediate steps have been taken to return the interns in question to their educational institutions.” This comes as a further blow to the firm’s employment record, after recent riots breaking out and strikes over iPhone 5 quality standards. These interns were sent to the facility from schools, with Foxconn carrying out full investigations with the relevant educational bodies to try to work out how this was allowed to happen. The tech manufacturer has been keen to accept responsibility for its part in the situation, advising strong action will be taken against any full-time members of staff found to have played a part in the breach.

NotFound.org gives error 404 webpages a more noble purpose

Error 404 is usually the error message returned when you try to access a website page that doesn’t exist. While some websites have relied on the default error 404 page, some have taken those 404 pages and turned them into something funny or clever. Well it seems that NotFound.org, a collaboration between Missing Children Europe and Child Focus, will be taking the error 404 pages and turn them into digital milk cartons in which missing or abused children’s photos will be put up in an effort to raise awareness. The idea is for anyone with a website to make use of the “dead space” found in error 404 pages and turn it into something useful, which in turn could lead to helping missing children be found.

At the moment about 1,600 websites use NotFound’s 404 page, and media conglomerate RTL have pledged their support and to get involved. There is no financial commitment so if you think that you want to do your part to help, navigate on over to NotFound’s website and learn how to put up one of their 404 pages for yourself.

Sprint targets the aged with their Samsung M400 phone

These days, the speed at which technology moves is so fast, that it can hit some rather dizzying heights – especially if you are from an older generation who find it difficult to make the transition from an old school Olivetti typewriter to a spanking new keyboard with WordStar staring right back at you. Yes sir, you do remember that DOS-based word processor, do you? If that is the case, then this story is most probably the perfect one for you assuming that you are on the lookout for a new phone to replace your aged Nokia 3310 which has served you extremely well over the past decade. Sprint has teamed up with Samsung to deliver the Samsung M400 which will sport accessibility features that were specially designed to meet the needs of senior citizens as well as those with disabilities. Not only that, Sprint claims that it is a great wireless phone for those who have a more practical mind, and want to use their phone for little else other than burn up the lines by chatting, snap some casual photos here and there, and send/receive text messages.

Since you probably would not be too young to want to tote the Samsung M400 (imagine being a college going kid with everyone else sporting a smartphone, while you deal with something that has features from a different age), it makes perfect sense for Sprint to make the Samsung M400 as affordable as possible. We are talking about the Samsung M400 being made available for free with a new line or eligible upgrade and two-year service agreement, but do bear in mind that this occurs only after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Some of the features which can be found in the Samsung M400 to make it extremely easy to use include a large 2.4-inch internal display with adjustable font sizes (yay!) that make it a snap to read text on the screen, in addition to an 1.07-inch external display so that you can check out incoming calls or pending notifications at a glance without having to open up its clamshell form factor.

There is also an oversized keypad to make sure typing is swift and painless, while a 5-way navigation key makes navigating the phone’s menu a snap. Not only that, Samsung threw in a dedicated 911 key and an In Case of Emergency (ICE) button which holds up to three contacts, allowing you to dial first responders or emergency contacts quickly. A 1.3-megapixel camera and Bluetooth connectivity rounds off the list of specifications for now. A phone for grandpa this Christmas, perhaps?
